IFBB Pro Roundtable

Many people get into the fitness industry with the goal of being an IFBB Pro. People call it the ultimate. Well if that is the case, then the seven women in this roundtable are all the ultimate. My roundtables got good reviews so I wanted to do an IFBB Pro one. I selected seven women who I respect and are great represntations, now only for their chosen division, not only the IFBB, but for the entire fitness industry. Debbie Fowler (Fitness), Emery Miller (Bodybuilding), Jackie Hoppe (Figure), LeslieRae Newton (Fitness), Mandy Henderson (Figure), Stacy Wright (Fitness), and Victoria larvie (Fitness). Part 2: Questions

1. Why did you decide to compete?
DF: I watched a local show and thought "Hey, I can do that". So I did!
EM: Bodybuilding was the first time I've ever in my life been good at something. I thought I'd see what I could do and I felt that stepping on that stage was something I'd earned after all the weight loss.
JH: I was always in a competitive sport as a kid, so when I got older and all my high school and college sports were over I felt like something was missing in my life since I didn't have a goal to work towards. Is tarted working out and had some of the gym employees tell me I should compete. I didn't know a thing about it, but thought why not? I did my first contest and became totally addicted to it. That was in 2006. I've entered 12 contests since then and can't wait for the next season to roll around.
LN: Someone told me it would be too hard for me to do.
MH: I had to prove to myself that I could do it.
SW: I don't see myself doing anything else! It's in my blood.
VL: Lee Haney is a personal family friend and he suggested it, and then I met Debbie Kruck and she invited me to compete in her show, as she had a Teen division, so I thought it might be fun, and I never regretted it.

2. What was the thing that most surprised you about competing?
DF: How addictive it is.
EM: How incredible nice everyone in the industry is. So much nicer and giving than any group of persons I've met (family included) ever.
JH: Probably how friendly most of the competitors are. I was scared to death when I did my first contest that all the girls were going to be catty and snotty backstage, but it was not like that at all!! I was SO happy to find out that most contests I've done all the competitors are super sweet and helpful to each other.
LN: That everyone is so nice.
MH: How addicting it was to walk on stage.
SW: The fact that I've made is as a Pro! Always knew deep down I would. Just crazy to actually be there!
VL: How tiny the bikini's actually were LOL.

3. What is the biggest misconception about female competitors?
DF: That the fitness girls are naturally gifted. We work our asses off to put together a routine. Some of us have no background in dance, gymnastics or cheer.
EM: That we are only choosing bodybuilding because we want to dominate and/or emasculate all men. That we want to look like men. That we are doing it because we have been somehow emotionally damaged. I love being a woman. I prefer men who like being men and I may have issues but they have nothing to do with why I am a bodybuilder. I just love the way I look and feel.
JH: That we are all bodybuilders. I don't even try to explain the difference when people ask me if I am a bodybuilder LOL
LN: They are all vein.
MH: That most of them are friendly.
SW: That we don't train as hard as the men.
VL: I think all of us are the same. Each of the women's 4 divisions are suppose to have totally different looks, as well as our contest prep is different.

4. On a scale of 1-10, how much are female competitors respected as compared to men?
DF: 5. We don't get the respect even though we work just as hard as the men. I think Fitness girls work even harder! Just look at the way the prize money is distributed.
EM: 3-5 amongst the industry, 8-9 amongst our fans.
JH: I would say about a 5. People don't think we have to work as hard (in my opinion). But a woman's metabolism is MUCH different than a mans. My husband is a competitor as well and I can truly say I work just as hard as he does, our bodies just respond much differently.
LN: 7
MH: I think we are respected a lot more than before. About an 8.
SW: Eh, hard to say. Also depends on who you ask.
VL: I would say probably a 5. It is obvious by the amount of money that paid to Ms. Olympia and what is paid to Mr. Olympia.

5. I won my Pro card at?
DF: Jr. Nationals this year
EM: 2004 NPC Nationals, Dallas, Texas
JH: 2010 Team Universe
LN: Team Universe
MH: The USA's in July 2010
SW: Fitness Nationals (AKA Team Universe)
VL: Jr. nationals, 2009, Chicago, Illinois

6. The first thought that entered my mind when I won my Pro card was?
DF: "Holy cow!! What now??"
EM: Hahahaha, when I stepped off stage I went directly up to Steve Wennerstrom and asked "so that's really it? I've won it? Are you sure I don't have to do ANYTHING else? Wow"
JH: "Am I getting PUNKED?" LOL
LN: "Did they just call my number?"
MH: "Thank you God, we FINALLY did it."
SW: "Thank you Lord for your blessing on me? It couldn't have happened at a better time in my life."
VL: "FINALLY" (I actually said that on stage when they announced my name)

7. It really sunk in that I was an IFBB Pro when?
DF: I got my IFBB card in the mail.
EM: When I paid my $200 annual fee and got my wee little card for my wallet.
JH: I received my official Pro card in the mail....signed by Mr. Manion himself!
LN: I did my first Pro show.
MH: I carried my HUGE trophy through the Las Vegas airport and the flight attendant made me stand at the door so all the passengers could congratulate me :-)
SW: I dropped my Pro card in the mailbox. Literally... when it dropped out of my hand.. my heart sunk and the realization set in! I went straight to the gym from there hahaha!
VL: I was standing on stage, they announced the 2nd place, and my mother begins to scream, my trainer is standing there looking at me, and my legs begin to shake, and then one of my best friends in the industry is the presenter- Jessica Putnam

8. The best thing about being an IFBB Pro is?
DF: Recognition of the years of hard work. And just to know that I'm good enough to be an IFBB Pro.
EM: The fact that I earned the right to the title, especially from where I began and being included amongst a bevy of so many incredibly impressive women.
JH: The feeling of accomplishment that I reached that level! I don't feel as much pressure competing as a Pro because just being considered an IFBB Pro was an accomplishment in itself.
LN: The support from everyone in the industry.
JH: The fact that I never gave up and achieved my goal after 6 years.
SW: Those four letters...I.F.B.B.
VL: I get to compete with some of the most awesome women. Every time I attend an event I feel like I am at a family reunion.

9. Is there more responsibility that goes along with being a Pro? If so, what?
DF: I think so. People look up to the pros, this is the ultimate achievement in our sport. We need to set a good example so our sport continues to grow.
EM: Gosh, I don't think so. The IFBB puts more constraints on us when competing but other than that the only added responsibility is an ethical one which I don't think should be any different fro amateur or pro. my point being that I have a responsibility to fans and new bodybuilders to render information with an informed view and not sugar coat things. We must be good sports, when we don't place where we'd have liked, respectful to our fellow competitors and generous with our assistance, but not allow ourselves to be used by those who are only interested in taking. We must be good custodians of the sport lest we lose it all.
JH: Yes I believe so. Girls look u to you more. They want to know everything about your diet and training... you are just held to a higher standard so I think its important to represent yourself and the sport with class.
LN: Of course, people are looking at the Pros and we create the stereotpye that is carried throughout the community.
JH: I think there is always a lot of responsibility just stepping on stage. I have always had to compete against amazing physiques.
SW: I definitely put the pressure on myself and believe it's a good thing. I want to use my "status" as a way to be a role model and positive inspiration to others.
VL: I believe we have a responsibility to help those coming into the industry and whenever we step on stage to always be at our best.

10. Outside of winning my Pro card, my greatest achievement in the sport is?
DF: Winning it at my age.
EM: The friends I've made. What better thing could there be?
JH: Winning the Alabama State Championship in 2008
LN: Making it back to the stage after my surgeries.
MH: Walking on stage after 3 major back operations and being told I would never live a physically normal life.
SW: My husband and I growing our personal training business together!
VL: Still to come.

11. The Pro I most admire is?
DF: Adela Garcia
EM: So difficult to answer that. I know of many but am too far away to be close with them. I can say whose physiques I admire, but I don't want to just blindly say that I admire someone's life and who they are without knowing enough about them. I will try though. From what I know I would say Lenda Murray, Melody Spetko, Sherry Smith, Lisa Aukland, Toni Newman, and I just love Betty Adkins and Milinda Richardson's physique. There really are so many. My brain is being over loaded here. You are giving me a headache LOL.
JH: Mary Elizabeth Lado... wish she was still competing.
LN: Susie Curry
MH: I admire ALL Fitness competitors. It takes a great deal of dedication, courage, and discipline to get on stage.
SW: I admire many Pros on so many levels for different achievements! I definitely can't single out just one. Each and every one of them has something to offer.
VL: That is difficult, there are soooo many. I will just name a few in Fitness- Adela Garcia, Tanji Johnson, and Carol Semple, but there are many others in Figure, Bikini, and Bodybuilding.

12. If a book is ever written about me it would be called?
DF: "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been"
EM: "Yes She Really Had The Balls TO Say That" LOL or, "She Ate How Many Plates At The Buffet?"
LN: "It's Never Over"
MH: "Mandy Henderson, The Girl Who Never Gave Up"
SW: "God, Love, Fitness And Family...The Wright Way"
VL: "Victoria A.K.A. Supergirl (that was my nickname in high school, so the best I could come up with :-)

13. In five years I will be?
DF: A happy wife and mom, with two kids in college and one to go.
EM: Oh wow, I have so many hopes and dreams, but my life is so up in the air now. I'm hoping to move to Tampa, Florida in April but it scared the crap out of me when I moved from Los Angeles County to Riverside County. It's a huge step! I want to make it to the top five consistantly in my sport, and maybe someday qualify for the O. I want to get my doctorate in Physical Therapy so I can have a regular job that is NOT effected by the economy and there is something else that I REALLY want but right now that is only a beautiful dream that I will keep to myself so I don't jinx it.
JH: Who knows!! Isn't that the beauty of life?
LN: Better than I am today
MH: Setting new goals and loving life with my family
SW: Working my way up the Pro ranks
VL: I hope to be Ms. Fitness Olympia

14. If they ever make a buddy cop comedy with competitors, the two best to star in it would be?
DF: Adela Garcia and Iris Kyle
EM: Toni Norman and Jana Linke Sippl (hehehehe picturing the paring. Too funny!)
JH: My girl Valerie Haines ( <3 her!) and lil Shala Singer
LN: Adela and Nita
MH: Jeanne Nimmer and Holly Powell
SW: I have no idea!
VL: Not sure

15. One competitor who should wirte an autobiography is?
DF: Suzie Curry, she's a pioneer.
EM: Gosh, I don't know anyone's background story enough to harbour a guess. Zoa Linsey?
JH: All of them! Everyone has a story to share
LN: Nita Wilson
MH: Monica Brant
SW: I'd love to read an autobiography about ANY competitor! We all have such different and amazing stories of overcoming obstales and achieving greatness!
VL: Adela Garcia

16. One competitor who does not get the coverage she deserves is?
DF: Mindi O'Brien, her routines blow me away. Hopefully with the new judging criteria she will place higher.
EM: None of us do Jason :-(
JH: I really like Huong Arcinas and the look she brings
LN: Couldn't name just one
MH: Heather Mae French
SW: Any Fitness girl! I'm all for seeing MUCH more exposure in the magazines and such for Fitness
VL: Tanji Johnson

17. One actor whose movies I always need to see is?
DF: I don't have a favorite actor. I like to see movies based on books I really like.
EM: Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Tim Roth
JH: I love Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCaprio. I usually make it a must to see their movies.
LN: Angelina Jolie
MH: Brad Pitt
SW: Will Ferrell
VL: Jude Law

18. The sports team whose games I always need to see are?
DF: I will watch anything competitive. I'll watch a spelling bee, doesn't matter. I do like the San Diego Chargers.
EM: Anything boxing or UFC
JH: Hmm... sometiems I watch Alabama football, but I'm not fanatical
LN: Florida Gators
MH: Pittsburgh Steelers
SW: West Virginia University MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!
VL: UGA Bulldogs

19. If I could spend one day training with someone it would be?
DF: Well since I do get to train with Adela already, I'll say Stacy Hilton.
EM: Charles Glass
JH: Erin Stern
LN: Jen H.
MH: My husband
SW: My husband :-)
VL: Adela Garcia

20. Anything you want to plug or promote?
DF: I'd love a sponsor if anyone's looking.
EM: Just the whole sport Jason. We need people to actually come to the shows. They hold low ticket slaes against us.
LN: www.leslierae.com
MH: www.mandyhenderson.com
SW: stacywright.net
VL: I am currently working with a new company, Fitness Pro lab, they are fairly new and have some great products and even a women' line of vitamins

21. My goals for 2011 are?
DF: Just get on stage and show them what I can do! And have a blast doing it.
EM: Moving, starting school, competing in 2 shows, top 5, and my dream wish..... :-)
JH: I want to try and do at least 2 or 3 Pro shows....of course I'd LOVE to qualify for the Olympia, but cracking the top 5 is the first goal.
LN: Get back on stage after my third and fourth knee surgeries....planning on Orlando Europa
MH: To enjoy the competition season, get an Arnold invite and of course qualify for the Olmypia
SW: Make my PRO DEBUT!!! And whether I place well or not... be someone remembered and hear the words..."she's the one to watch"
VL: To place top 5 in a Pro show

IFBB Pro Kristal Martin Interview

You know someone is special when in a short time they go from someone you are not to familiar with, to someone you would call a personal favorite. That is the case with Kristal Martin. Her great attitude and great physique, which resulted in her winning her IFBB Pro card at the 2010 Team Universe make her the kind of competitor people can instantly become a fan of. Kristal will make her Pro debut in 2011, and is no doubt someone who will do great in the Pro division and represent the IFBB very well.

Q: First, Kristal, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: No, no, no...thank YOU! :)

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: Hmmm...where do I start? My name is Kristal Martin and I'm not really sure where I'm from at this point, lol. I've lived in seven states (New Hampshire, Michigan, Illinois, California, Virginia, Florida and New Jersey). As you can see, me and my family moved a lot growing up! I hated it at the time, but looking back it definitely made me into the strong and independent person I am today. My family is everything to me. My parents are still together and madly in love after 39 years. My mom is my best friend and I talk to her a million times a day and my dad is someone I have always looked up to and admired. I also have an older brother who I adore (even though he picks on me - the typical big brother/little sister scenario - haha).

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: I always played sports growing up and have been a tomboy my whole life. I played mostly soccer and basketball.

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: I started lifting weights when I was 19 years old. I had just gotten out of an unhealthy relationship which put me in the emergency room twice. At the time I was 5'8" and 115lbs with no muscle whatsoever. I started lifting because I felt empowered when I was in the gym. The stronger I got physically, the stronger I felt mentally/emotionally.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: I started to see results immediately and it was definitely something I picked up quickly. I've always been really big on proper technique which I feel has prevented me from having any serious injuries (knock on wood). I also always trained with guys growing up which I feel gave me an advantage when it came to putting on significant size.

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I was at the gym and the mother of a competitor came up to me and asked me if I competed. I had no clue what she was talking about - what was "competing"? lol I started researching everything and knew I wanted to start training for a show. I began working Mike Davies from the Fitness Factory and have never looked back! I drove out to Ohio to train with him and the girls and was immediately inspired and motivated.

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: My family had no clue what it was all about - but they were extremely supportive.

Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: The only thing that surprised me was how much a person can sweat when they get nervous! My first show was the Arnold and I was walking around backstage with toilet paper and paper towels shoved in my armpits to help preserve my tan from the "sweat drip". LOL I knew I would be nervous but didn't realize it would be THAT bad. Now when I'm backstage I put socks under my arms to help - I've found it works much better than paper towels :)

Q: You one your Pro card at the 2010 Team Universe. What did that pro card mean to you personally?
A: Winning my Pro card at Team Universe was a feeling I can't describe. My five year old nephew, Cameron, had been battling an inoperable brain tumor (pontine glioma) leading up to the show. The emotions and frustrations I felt during that difficult time drove me and pushed me even harder in the gym. My heart was breaking for him and my family and the only thing that kept me sane was working out. Workouts with both tears and sweat became the norm.

After battling terminal cancer for 15 months, hospice was called in two days before my show. My first reaction was to drop out of the competition and fly down to Florida to be with my family. However, they all told me to stay and compete. They wanted me to go out there and represent for my entire family and win my Pro card for Cameron. I felt such a sense of pride up there on that stage. It may sound silly, but during my families darkest hours...getting my Pro card was a much needed distraction - it was a positive moment for all of us. Before I walked on stage I had talked to my brother (Cameron's father) and he said "Go out there, kick ass, win that Pro card and tell everyone you know about Cameron Roy Martin." I've been telling people about him and sharing his story ever since :) Cam has since passed away, but his story lives on. My goal is to bring awareness to pediatric brain tumors - and hopefully one day in my lifetime we will find a cure.

Q: Can you share your contest history
A:
*(figure)2006 East Coast Tournament of Champions (2nd place) Washington DC
*(figure)2006 BodyRock (8th place) Maryland
*(bikini)2010 Arnold Classic Amateur (2nd place) Ohio
*(bikini)2010 NPC Metropolitan Bikini (3rd place) New York
*(bikini)2010 Team Universe (2nd place) New Jersey - IFBB BIKINI PRO

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: Booty booty booty! (and legs) I'm naturally tall and skinny so I'm proud of the junk in my trunk I've acquired over my years of training. Genetics definitely played NO part and have always worked against me - my butt is the result of my hard work in the gym.

Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: Booty booty booty! I LOVE LUNGES.

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: I always eat pretty clean and train hard. Contest prep is the usual low carb, high protein diet.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: Its always positive - most people are more interested in the training/dieting aspect than the whole "putting on heels and standing onstage" part.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A" I HATE when I'm in the gym right before a show and guys make comments like "she must be on steroids". Guess what dummy - when you get off your fat ass and actually DIET and TRAIN HARD...you too can get vascular and lean. Its just annoying. Its only happened once or twice but it drives me crazy. And I'm a bikini competitor! I don't even have a lot of muscle!

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: Just live and let live. I get so annoyed with people who make negative comments about muscular women. Not so much with the bikini division - but with the figure and bb girls. Not a damn thing wrong with muscle on a woman - and just because it may not be everyone's cup of tea doesn't give you a right to judge. ALL women are beautiful and should be respected - skinny/fat, tall/short, etc doesn't matter. Live and let live!

Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: Best part of competing is seeing the way your body changes week after week when getting ready for a show. Worst part is rebounding. I've rebounded pretty bad after each show - its my downfall. I know its a weakness of mine and I'm working on it.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Jodie Minear (figure competitor) is one of my favs. I'm also a fan of Amanda Latonas butt :)

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Uhhhhh....EVERYTHING. Nachos, pizza, donuts, oreos, peanut butter cups...you name it...I love it.

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Doooooo iiiiiiiiiit! Don't hesitate - don't make excuses - don't quit. Whatever the reason is to get in the gym and start training - just MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Q: Do you think it is becoming more common to see women in the gym training as hard as men?
A: I definitely think so. I have seen some badass women - young and old - training hard at the gym. Its refreshing and inspiring.

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: Spending time with family and friends. I'm a homebody and enjoy just vegging out with my boyfriend and our two pit bulls.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Kristal Martin?
A: Eat, train, work, sleep. :) Throw in a lot of smiles/laughter along the way and that pretty much sums it up!

Q: Describe Kristal Martin in five words.
A: Independent, Intelligent, Stubborn, Loyal, Driven

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I drool in my sleep. LOL I can't help it! I honestly do the infamous "pillow flip" about twenty times a night :) Sexy...I know...

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: Will be making my Pro debut in 2011. Not sure which shows yet...but I can't wait!

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: I'd just like to encourage everyone to visit www.wish.org (Make-A-Wish Foundation) and also www.stjude.org (St. Judes Childrens Hospital). Whether its volunteering your time, donating money, or just educating yourself about what these children and families go through - I encourage everyone to open your minds and your hearts to these amazing organizations.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Kristal Martin the athlete and competitor?
A: Yessir! email me at kristalmar10@yahoo.com I'm cute, I'm fun, I'm smart and I'm a hard worker. Nuff said :)

Q: Kristal , again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
A: Just tell the people in your life you love them and take care of one another. Lifes too short. don't sweat the small stuff, BE in the moment, and SMILE! xoxo

Ronda Gale Interview

I have seen Ronda Gale fight in person twice. After her recent win over Marcia May, I was so impressed. She sowed so much heart and determination to win a grueling fight. I decided I needed to do an interview with her. Ronda is what is great about MMA. Tough, determined, hard working, and ever improving. And if she continues to improve fight to fight like she has so far, then we are about to see one hell of an exciting fighter.

Q: First, Ronda, thanks so much for doing this.
A: I'm grateful to have the opportunity to do this interview.

Q: Can you start by telling a little about yourself.
A: I'm 34 years old a wife and a mother of 4, I am also a store manager of a fast food business.

Q: Were you especially athletic growing up? Play any sports?
A: Yes up until high school I played volleyball, basketball, softball, and ran track in high school I didn't have as much time so i stuck to volleyball and softball.

Q: What initially got you started training for MMA?
A: My husband,I was always on the sidelines watching him train and going to fights and grew a love for the sport, so I started training with him.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy?
A: It was fairly easy for me, but don't get me wrong, there is still things to this day that I get frustrated over.

Q: How long did you train for your first fight?
A: I was only training for about 3 months when I took my first fight.

Q: Was fighting something your family and friends supported?
A: Yes my family and friends are very supportive of me and always there for me, lol my mom is one of my biggest supporters but refuses to go to the fights, shes a mom and cant handle it but has been talking about coming to my next one.

Q: Where do you train at?
A: I train out of the DUNGEON in Akron Ohio.

Q: Can you share your overall record?
A: Its 3-2

Q: Which fight so far is the one you are most proud of?
A: I'm most proud of my last fight against Marcia May, with every fight I get better and show more skills.

Q: What would you say is your biggest strength and the thing you most want to improve on?
A: I am my own biggest critic so I looked to my coaches for this answer and they said .. my 2 strengths are my persistence and my heart..and biggest weakness is I'm to hard on myself.

Q: What is the best and worst part of training and competing in this sport?
A: The best part of training is being pushed to that limit were you think you cant go anymore but you know you have to keep pushing, that is the best and worst part.

Q: Are there any fighters you are a fan of or like to watch?
A: Yes my favorite female fighter is by far Jessica Eye, and male fighter is my own team mate Josh Moore.

Q: In your opinion who are the top five pound for pound in the sport?
A: Id have to say ..Tara Larosa, Megumi Fugi, Erin Toughill, Sarah Kaufman, and Gina Carano

Q: Do you ever see a major U.S. women's only company being viable?
A: It is almost 2011 and I can see it happening in a few years.

Q: Often you see a show that has one women's fight, and it ends up being the most exciting fight on the show. Why do you think that is?
A: I think that the female fights are always more exciting because we don't have the knock out power that a man has but we have a much higher pain tolerance to keep going the distance.

NAAFS Night Of Champions Report

On Saturday December 4th NAAFS put on their Night Of Champions card. The biggest show of the year with many titles up for grabs. As is normal, they put on a great show. Many fantastic matches highlighted by Doug Kulbis and Kevin Rothacker putting on one of the best fights I have ever seen live in person. These two warriors left it all in the cage. Neither backed up and neither gave any less than 110 percent. This fight defined why I love mixed martial arts. Another highlight for me was seeing one of the top female amateur fighters in this sport Tamikka Brents in action against another talented fighter Jessica Zomcik. One thing about the NAAFS is you will not see mismatches. The fights are evenly matched and usually action packed. Sure you will see the quick finish, but that happens on every show with every company. This show was attended by many and more than once there was nice standing ovations for the fighters. Seeing an NAAFS show is exciting because you see so many future stars in this sport as the continue to improve. If you have not seen an NAAFS show, you truly must, it isn't the glitz and glamour of a UFC PPV, but instead it is what this sport is all about. Hungry fighters doing what they love to do, and leaving it all inside the cage.

December 2010 Cover Model Nichole Long

Nichole Long is a woman who has done and continues to do many different things in MMA. Among those things are managing fighters, announcing, and being the best amateur matchmaker around. Often you hear me praise the NAAFS on this page and on my blog. Nichole is a major reason for that praise. Rarely will you see such a tireless hard worker. Often an overlooked person in any MMA promotion is the matchmaker because people don't often care about the behind the scenes aspect of the sport. They just want to see good exciting fights. In the NAAFS you always see those fights, and you get to see them because of Nichole's ability to put those fights together. What sets Nichole apart from most people who perform the same job in other promotions, is her genuine concern and caring for the fighters. The fighters are not just "fighters" to her and that is evident when talker to fighters who have fought for the NAAFS and hearing the praise the fighters give to her and the respect they have for her. Being a matchmaker is not as simple as saying "o.k., this guy will fight this guy, or this girl can fight this girl". It takes a lot of phone calls, texts, and work dealing with fighters, managers, trainers, and dealing with late replacements, negotiations, not to mention all the running around and getting things done on fight night.
But there is more to Nichole. Look at the photos. She also does modeling photo shoots and her unique and beautiful look combined with a great camera presence make her photos stand out. She is someone any photographer should want in their portfolio.
You often hear people say they wish there was more time in the day, and in Nichole's case, I bet that statement really applies to her, but if there was more time in the day, Nichole would probably spend it not relaxing, but working even more to make sure the NAAFS continues to be a great promotion that will only continue to get bigger and bigger.
Nichole can also be contacted if you are looking for an announcer, as she is accomplished at that, and also can be contacted for photo shoots.
Nichole is a woman of many talents and does many different things, but each thing she does, she does with professionalism and puts everything she has into everything she does.

Shawnee Merrell Interview

In this interview Shawnee Merrell describes herself as "More than just a fighter". That is obviously a very truthful statement. A full time college student, along with an MMA fighter, I have been very impressed with Shawnee since the first time I talked to her. Balancing both school and training has to be at times exhausting, but she seems to be the type of person who can handle it and be a huge success at it. Shawnee is one of those people I feel I am sort of introducing to a lot of fans and when she is a star in this sport I can look back and say "I told ya so".

Q: First, Shawnee I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Not a problem. Thank you for allowing me to do an interview

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: Sure, I’m 20ys old I was born in Payson Ut. I was 2 years old when I moved to Wyoming. I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and team mates. I also like coaching swimming and being outdoors. I’m the fourth child of five. I’m actually the middle between two boys to whom I am the closest with. Growing up with brothers was definitely a different experience. As much as I hate to say it being such a tom boy is what got me into fighting, Nick Mamalis got a hold of me to fight because I had a few street fights and he knew about it. But the one that really kept me going in such a great sport is my boyfriend and team captain Ty Hamblin. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be the fighter I am today.

Q: Were you especially athletic growing up? Play any sports?
A: Most definitely, I swam competitively for about six years and in the off season I played basketball and ran track as well. So it was normal for me to be in a sport at some point In time

Q: What initially got you started training for MMA?
A: Well actually I had two local fights in my hometown while I was in high school still, and after I graduated I moved away for the summer and when I came back I got a call to fight that next month and I said yes, well then my now coach and boyfriend called me to come train at his gym and it all started with him and my family at team outcast.

Q: Was the training something you picked up fairly easy?
A: Uhm my stand up was something I was able to pick up fairly easy. My ground game is still what catches me.

Q: How long did you train before your first fight?
A: Ha, that’s a funny one. I actually had four days to train before my first fight. Nick Mamalis actually caught me four days before the show while I was at work to ask me to come fight for the show.

Q: Was fighting something your family and friends supported?
A: At first no, My dad threatened after my first loss and fight to take me off the health insurance if I kept doing it. Then I pulled the dad, the boys got to do extreme sports card and he finally caved. My friends on the other hand thought it was the most amazing thing ever. My second fight I had happened to be against Jennifer berg the night before I graduated high school and friends as well as teachers came out to watch that one. It was an amazing experience

Q: Where do you train at now?
A: I train at Outcast gym in Rock Springs Wy under Teno Trujillo and Ty Hamblin. For the first year I Trained there I was the only female. Now we have one other one, my team mate and ex opponent Kiele Lewis. I also train at another facility called Wyocombatives, it’s also in Rock Springs WY

Q: Can you give your overall record so far.
A: Unofficially my record is 2-3 two of the fights weren’t registered.

Q: Which fight so far is the one you are most proud of?
A: My proudest fight by far has to be the night my whole family came out to watch me fight a girl and I ended up winning 22 seconds in the first round via Rear naked choke. I was so happy that my family was able to be there for that.

Q: What would you say is your biggest strength and the one thing you most want to improve
A: My biggest strength is my standup, and I would like to improve on my power, as well as my ground game.

Q: What is the best and worst part of training and competing in the sport?
A: I would have to say sparring boys twice my size, one of whom happens to be my boyfriend. Oh, and cardio.

Q: Are there any fighters you are a fan of or love to watch?
A: Julie Budd. I love watching her fights.

Q: In your opinion, who are the top five female fighters in the sport pound for pound?
A: Cyborg although Julie Budd is also a stud fighter, and Fujii. After that I’m staying out of it

Q: Do you ever see a major U.S. women's only company being viable?
A: Possibly, I noticed as of lately there has been a handful of female only fight cards. I think it just depends.

Q: Often you watch a show that has one women's fight. Somehow that fight always turns out to be the most exciting fight on the card. Why do you think that is?
A: Because female fighters are amazing!!

Q: What is the biggest misconception about female fighters?
A: That we’re not that tough. And we don’t put on good shows.

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to train for the sport, whats the biggest piece of advice you would give her?
A: Are you sure you want to get hit in the face that hard as well as repeatedly

Q: Outside of training and fighting, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
Actually I’m a fulltime college student, so that takes up a lot of time. I also really enjoy spending time with my family as well as swimming. I still have a love for that sport.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Shawnee Merrell
A: A typical day would be school, cardio, homework, training, work, and usually after work it’s either more cardio or regular practice.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I despise working on my cardio.

Q: Describe Shawnee Merrell in five words
More than just a fighter.

Q: So whats next for you? Any idea when you will be fighting again?
A: I actually have a title fight in Ben Oregon, Jan 8 against Liz McCarthy. But nothing for sure until then.

Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: I want to give huge thanks to Outcast. You boys have done so much for me. Thank you Teno for everything you’ve done for me. And To Ty Thank you so much for not hitting me in the throat when I know you’ve wanted too. Also big thanks to WyoCombatives and Mike Nauman for all of your help and patience. And finally a huge thank you to my family for supporting me in everything I do. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so, how can they reach you and what are they getting in Shawnee Merrell the fighter and person?
A: Of Course, they can reach me at my e-mail at hotstriker10@gmail.com. And as a fighter and a person, I will give them my all.

Q: Shawnee again, I want to thank you for doing this. Any last words before you go?
A: No problem, and I would just like to thank my family again, without you guys I wouldn’t be who I am. And I would also like to thank my sponsor S&W Welding. And you. Thank you for taking your time to give me this interview.

Kira Neuman NPC West Virgina State Interview

I think the biggest compliment a competitor can get is not fans saying how great she looked, not judges saying how great she looked, but when other competitors point out how great she looked. Very rarely have I had so many competitors tell me how great a competitor looked as the amount who told me that about Kira Neuman at the NPC West Virginia State. I expected Kira to do great which is one reason I asked her to do this interview even before the show, but honestly she looked even more incredible than I expected. Kira's already amazing physique looked, in my opinion, better than ever. She says the Pro card isn't the ultimate goal so much as just improving with each show. Well she is achieving her goal then because she keeps improving, and that improvement is going to lead her to that Pro card one day.

Q: Kira, thanks for taking the time out to do this.
A: Absolutely! Thank you! Very honored to do this!

Q: For those who may may not be familiar, can you tell a little about yourself.
A: I am a national level bodybuilder from Indianapolis, Indiana. I am a personal trainer and I have a degree in P.E. and Health Education. Currently working on my masters in Special Ed! Other than that I am just a crazy, life-loving, outgoing and super silly girl!

Q: Congrats on your the NPC West Virginia State. You looked incredible.
A: Awww thanks so much! I am flattered and very happy to have won!

Q: Early in the day I received a text from someone saying it was yours easily. Did you feel that way or not sure till they announced the winner?
A: Ummmm, honestly I had no idea. I didn’t really look at any pics that my girlfriend took. And I couldn’t really tell just by standing next to the girls. And honestly, I don’t like to have that thought in my head only because I don’t want to let my guard down and do something stupid in between the pre judge and finals. Always gotta keep my game face on!

Q: Since you haven't been on stage in a little while, where there any nerves?
A: Oh heck no! I am a stage lover! I definitely love getting up there and strutting my stuff! I am very confident up there and I just think of it as another day at work!

Q: As a show itself what did you think of it?
A: I thought it was a fantastic show! Lots of quality athletes from the women to the men. I had no idea how big the show would be and it was definitely a great turn-out! And definitely well ran. Super impressed!

Q: How confident were you going in?
A: Ummm well I didn’t train or diet as hard as I have in the past so I was confident but a little bit of questioning myself beforehand. Of course my friends were confident for me but I still didn’t know since I had slacked off a bit!

Q: After pre-judging how were you feeling about your chances?
A: I was feeling good but like I said I never like to get too cocky about it cuz I don’t want to let my guard down.

Q: How did you feel about the overall package your brought to the stage?
A: I was very pleased. Although I had slacked a lot I felt that I looked better than ever! I really can’t complain! Of course I want to make improvements! Never enough right?!

Q: Is there one part of your physique you feel has really improved since last time on stage?
A: My legs! I always struggle with getting them in shape and I felt that they looked the best they ever have! Very happy with that.

Q: Is there one part you really want to improve on?
A: There again my legs! I want deeper cuts and more lines and just an overall harder look.

Q: At what point during prep did you feel you were ready?
A: The day of the show! I always have a little doubt that I could have done more and done something differently especially since I cheated more during this prep and did less cardio. However, I felt that it did my body good to not stress about it. And like I said this was the best I have ever looked! But I will never feel that I am ready before a show because I want to continue busting my butt!

Q: Did the prep go as smooth as you would like?
A: Yes it actually went smoother because I didn’t stress it. I made it a point to enjoy my life and have a life as well. And I had a great support system in my girlfriend who pushed me and kept me on my toes!

Q: Anything about the prep process you wish you had done different?
A: Well, I wish I would’ve done more cardio. As for the diet and how often I had my little cheats I don’t regret that. I really think my body adapted and utilized that to the fullest because I really feel I looked better than I ever had and I was able to just relax about it.

Q: After a show like that, are you mentally drained at all?
A: Ugh yes!! After I’m done with a show I feel a sense of freedom and freeness!! I feel like I can do whatever without being on a schedule. I enjoy discipline and a regimen but I also enjoy being able to eat whenever and train whenever.

Q: I have had several people who compete tell me how great they thought you looked. Do you take extra pride in it when other competitors point something like that out?
A: Awww well tell them thanks for me! I really appreciate the love and support! And compliments of course! Oh absolutely. I always feel extra flattered and grateful when fellow competitors show their support and give me positive feedback. It is so flattering!

Q: What goes through your mind those last few minutes before you step on stage?
A: I always think to myself, “let’s show em what you’re workin with girl!” hahahahahahah that is seriously something I say to myself before I go on stage!
Q: When you were on stage did you try and read the judges reactions at all or just focus on what you are doing?
A: Oh I never really look at the judges other than to smile and kinda flirt! Hahahahahaha No I just try to show them the respect of acknowledging that they are critiquing me!

Q: Whats the first thing you ate once it was over?
A: HAHAHHAHAHAH I love when people ask me this!! I ate pizza of course! Then I had ice cream the next night but I didn’t go crazy like I have in the past. Didn’t want to get sick!

Q: Was there any other competitors you noticed who really impressed you?
AL There were two other female bb’s who looked great at that show. One who I talked to quite a bit and she was super sweet and looked great. She should continue to do well and I really hope she does!

Q: What will be your biggest memory from the entire weekend?
A: Having my girlfriend there to help me and all of our friends who came up to support me!

Q: Am I correct to assume the Pro card is the ultimate goal?
A: Hahahahahahaha well to be honest, a pro card isn’t on my bucket list! Now don’t get me wrong I would love to get my pro card. However, I make improving my physique and bettering my look each year my ultimate goal. Now if I go into a show and win it then heck yeah I would be stoked but I just focus on making adjustments and working hard. And hopefully inspiring others to get in shape and/or compete.

Q: Have you decided when you will be on stage next?
A: Not exactly but I am looking at doing USA’s again. Not that I really need an excuse to go to Vegas but if I do need one it would be to compete there again! I love that show and would like to do it again.

Q: Anyone you want to thank for helping you in the process?
A: My loving and supportive and wonderful girlfriend. She is my best friend and the one who motivates me the most. And of course my parents who also love what I do and encourage me. My clients and other patrons of the gym who supported me and continually cheered me on!

Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: My website: www.kiraneuman.com and my gym’s site: www.fitnessnowindy.com

Q: Kira again congrats. I was really excited to hear how well you did. Any last words before you go?
A: Thanks so much! I appreciate it more than you know! Last words? Put down the doughnuts and pick up a dumbbell or two! Hahahahahahahaa! I hope that encourages someone! Thanks again!
