Kerri Bolen Interview

First time I saw Kerri Bolen I wondered "Why have I not seen her before" I was so very impressed by her photos. But I have since found out there is much more to Kerri than a great physique and beautiful photos....... much more. She says you can do anything you set your mind to, and she doesn't just preach it, she proves it. In 2011 she will do her first National level show, and no doubt she will prove it once again.

Q: First, Kerri, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I currently live in Williston, SC - Barnwell County. I've been here most of my life. I was raised by Christian parents with good values. I am married to a wonderful man with two boys, and I have a 19-year old son and a 21-year old step-son. My son is actually on the waiting list to go in the Air Force. I'm proud that he is going to be serving his country.

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: I guess I was always athletic. We had horses from the time I was two years old, so I was really into horseback riding. I also played football with all the boys in the neighborhood and boxed in my uncle's front yard with the rest of the kids. When I got older I played softball. But weightlifting was my true love!

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: I think I initially got interested in working out through my uncle. He was really into working out and when I was a teenager (probably about 14 or 15), I started lifting some with him. It's been in my blood ever since.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: Yes, I picked it up quickly by watching others and reading every Muscle and Fitness magazine I could get my hands on. Actually, it didn't take long at all for me to see results. I have pretty good genetics.

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: Looking at the magazines I was always interested in bodybuilding and fitness. I wanted to look like the women in those magazines - Rachel McLish and Cory Everson. I am a very competitive person, so I made myself a goal and just went for it.

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: Actually, my parents aren't very interested in the competitions. My husband is very supportive. I wouldn't be able to do all this without him. We train together, he diets with me - the whole nine yards. I'm blessed to have him.

Q: Was competing what you expected?
A: Yes, pretty much, it's a lot of hard work, but well worth it.

Q: Can you share your contest history
A:
Bodybuilding:

*1991- Georgia Bodybuilding Championships- Atlanta , GA- Lightweight Div.- 6th place
*2003- NPC Palmetto Cup, SC- Lightweight Div.- 1st place & Overall
*2003- SNBF Supernatural, Duluth , GA- Lightweight Div.- 3rd place
Figure:
*Aug 2010- SC Upstate Classic- Spartanburg- 2nd place- Figure A, 1st place Masters Div.
*Aug 2010- Excalibur, Charleston, SC- 3rd place- Figure A, 2nd place Masters Div.
*Oct. 2010 -Jen Hendershott's All Women's Wknd- 3rd place- Figure A, 5th place Masters Div.

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: I think my biceps are my best body part. Everyone is always teasing me about "my guns".

Q: Do you have a part you most like to train?
A: Shoulders is my favorite part to train and abs is a close second.

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: My husband and I are pretty intense with our training. We lift heavy, but then we will do something different once in a while to shake things up. In my off season diet, I still try to eat pretty clean, but I do take in more carbs. When I'm dieting down for a contest, I might do more drop sets and gradually drop most of my carbs.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: The reactions I get are all positive and I get them mostly from women.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A" I guess the thing I hear the most is, "I LOVE your arms". Everyone sees my arms more - rarely are my legs seen in the gym, because usually I am wearing sweat pants. But I wouldn't say I'm sick of hearing it - it actually makes me feel good when I get a compliment like that.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: I guess that it DOES take a lot of hard work and determination, but that anyone can do it - if they set their mind to it.

Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The two things I love about competing are 1) working out hard, and just all the show preparation and 2) when they announce your name for first callouts at the night show. That is such a rush!
The worst part, for me, is getting nervous. I have only competed in figure three times and I still get a little stage fright.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: I really admire Shannon Meteraud. Not only is she a great competitor and trainer, I believe she is a wonderful wife and mother. She loves to compete, but she puts her family first.

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Cookie Dough Ice Cream

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Maybe start out with a good personal trainer to get off on the right foot. Then, be consistent in your training and diet, stay focused and you will get there!

Q: Do you think it is becoming more common to see women in the gym training as hard as men?
A: I don't see a lot of it where I work out as far as weight training. There are a few women at my gym that train pretty hard, but for the most part, I see most of them just doing cardio and the various classes at the gym (which is good, too).

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love horseback riding and spending time with my family.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Kerri Bolen.
A: I work a full-time job (10 hours a day). After work, I go to the gym. I am also a part-time personal trainer and I usually have a few clients to train. Then I have to train myself. LOL! My husband will meet me over there. We are there usually about an hour and a half (or more right before a show). Go home, check my emails, get in the bed, cause I have to get up at 4:30 am and start all over again.

Q: Describe Kerri Bolen in five words.
A: Christian, Fit. Determined, Funny, Caring

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: Well, probably that I sing at church. I have my own built-in guitar player (my husband).

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: I'm in my off-season now, but I plan on competing at the Jr. USA next May in Charleston , SC. This will be my first national-level show, so I am hoping to do well.

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Actually, I would like to offer my personal training services. I am an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer and I am working part-time at Achieve Fitness in Aiken, SC. I can help with general weight loss and also competition prep. I have competed in bodybuilding and figure so I have a lot of knowledge and experience in those areas, also. I love helping people.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Kerri Bolen the athlete and competitor?
A: Sure, I would love to have sponsors - all these competitions get expensive. "Hey all you supplement companies out there, I am a sucker for a good-tasting protein powder and a chocolate protein bar." If I believe in the product, I will definitely speak up and promote the product. If someone wants to contact me, my email address is kerri.bolen@yahoo.com.

Q: Kerri , again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
A: I would just like to say that it's never too late to start healthy eating habits and get in shape. I didn't work out too much the last few years because I was having back trouble. I just started back working out in April 2010 and by August 2010, I was competing in Figure and placing in the top five every time. You can do anything you set your mind to.

You Asked It with IFBB Pro Stacy Wright

I decided instead of me always asking the questions, why not give fans a chance to ask some questions. SO I came up with the idea for You Asked It. A chance for you to ask the questions. You send the questions and the competitor can pick her favorite ones to answer. I needed to kick it off with a bang. Someone who I knew would do good with it. So I selected IFBB Fitness Pro Stacy Wright. So thanks to Stacy for agreeing to be the first.

Q: What are common weight loss obstacles people must overcome?
A: The change in mindset is the number 1 obstacle. Most people think to lose weight you have to starve yourself and do a lot of cardio! I'm here to tell you that with that mindset, you will get nowhere fast! You may lose weight, but it will be muscle.. and in the long run, your increasing your body fat.. not decreasing it.

Q: Recent mother of 2 so time for self is impossible. 3 years ago I had 8 percent body fat and competed in amateur bodybuilding. I want to get back in it. Any tips on how to fit in?
A: You need to do some juggling and get a very strong support team! Anything we want to do bad enough we find time for.. just a matter of getting SUPER organized and balancing things out. Prepping meals ahead of time, make the most of their nap time and if you can't make it to the gym, start by working out at home. Anything is better than nothing. If you have someone who can be at home before they get up, hit the gym in the morning before the sun comes up.. then nap when they nap to catch up on sleep. There are multiple ways to figure it out.. just a matter of taking the time.

Q: How far out do you suggest is best to start working on a routine for a specific show?
A: Depending on how far out of competition shape you are depends on how far in advance you need to get started. Same goes for the routine. If you already have the mandatories down it'll just get easier and easier to get a routine together as your body weight and conditioning come together. I typically like to give myself some extra time, so once the routine is together and I'm able to get through it all, that I have time to make adjustments as needed if something just isn't working right or doesn't look right in the routine. If you want a number time frame though, some people take anywhere from 6-16 or more weeks to get a routine together.

Q: My goal is not to compete. I have no desire. But I do want the "look" of a competitor. I train at a very hardcore gym. If I don't plan to compete should I switch to a gym that isn't so loaded with competitors? I hate constantly being asked "When is your next show?"
A: I definitely would NOT switch gyms due to the questioning if you like the environment of your current gym. People no matter where you go will probably be asking you that. It comes with the territory. Be proud that you can carry around a physique that draws such positive attention. If it helps, wear headphones and a hat. That always helps calm down the questions and talk in the gym =) To me, I go to the gym that has the equipment that I need the hours and days of the week I need it.

Q: You are very beautiful. Do you find it to be extra important to remain a certain degree of femininity in a physique based sport?
A: To be honest, no! =) I Love muscle and I have a look that I desire to have and work every day towards that. Just like ANY girl, I DO want to be beautiful and feminine and appreciate the compliment. In my eyes, symmetry and balance in muscle ARE beauty, though.

Q: I train with another female friend and she really doesn't like to push as hard. I feel it effects my workout in a negative way. Should I train alone, or even try and find a male training partner?
A: Haha! I have never had a female training partner for the long haul, but have had friends workout with me from time to time. I prefer to keep it that way. When training alone, I'm able to pace myself to get the most out of my workouts, I don't have to take time between sets for discussion or anything. I live such a busy and hectic lifestyle, while I LOVE the gym... absolutely LOVE it, I do not have time to spend hours and hours there.. as I have to go back day after day. It may sound mean, but I don't mean it that way. But I don't go to the gym to make friends. I go to get a job done. To progress my body! To get better and better, and also, I might mention- to decrease stress of actually being so busy and overwhelmed at times. On the other hand, I have trained with my husband, Andrew, on and off for years. The great thing about us training together is we have SUCH a connection that we don't even have to talk. We can give each other a look and know if we need a spot, or how many more reps to do. It doesn't hinder the training session, it helps it! So even though, it's the "thing" to do to have a training partner, for the most part I go against the grain there. Unless you have a person you have a total connection with, it's not worth the sacrifice of a great workout!

Q: I train and lift very heavy, except for some reason I have never been able to bench very heavy. If I am benching light, is it lessening the results, or am I ok if I do enough reps with the right form?
A: I always train with progression in mind. Never compare yourself to someone else..just like we do when we step on stage. Your goal should be to be better than you were the last time you stepped on stage. With that in mind, if you're lifting heavy and keeping strict form, your body will have to improve due to the increased stress on your body. Even if you only get 1 more rep from week to week, that's progression!

Q: Fitness seem to not get the coverage other divisions get. Therefore less and less seem to compete in Fitness. Why do you think that is?
A: I really don't know why fitness doesn't get much coverage. If I had a dollar for every time I hear "the routines are my favorite" I could retire. It seems like with that much interest in the routines.. there would be more. When you think about it, you can't put a full routine in a magazine, and you don't see too many supplement commercials to show off routine skills... so even though people love the routines, it's only something you see live at a show. I will say I don't think the fact fitness doesn't have much "coverage" is why we don't have more competing. Fitness is HARD. Trying to balance getting in hard workouts, routine time (which after the hard workout you're either exhausted, sore, or tight), then cardio (which now you're exhausted from practicing your routine)... it's just very hard. Then you add in life .. work, family, holidays, errands, cooking meals... there's really a struggle to find enough hours in the day. But somehow you learn to make things work! Unless you have a strong desire and dream of being a fitness competitor it's simply "easier" to go for another division.

Q: I will be competing for the first time in 2011. People tell me with the prep comes mood swings. How can I make people understand the reason for this so they don't think I am just being mean?
A: I very much so dislike this excuse. It seems like some people like to use dieting as an excuse to be mean. Yes, it can suck, and you can be cranky sometimes... but prepare yourself! If you KNOW you're going to go through a dieting process, especially if it's new, you need to be overly aware of yourself. Keep yourself under control. Before you say or do ANYTHING, take a second and basically sensor yourself. Me, personally, dieting is fine for me. It's when I get sleep deprived that I get "cranky".. but I am aware of that. And I watch what I do and don't do when I know I'm not getting the sleep I need. That way you don't "change" when you're in a certain phase of your life and people don't resent you and your competition process. Talk with your family and close friends and explain to them what you're doing. Education and preparation are the key to success and even though you're the only one dieting, it DOES effect those around you even if not by choice. So since they didn't choose it, it's not fair to take it out on them. Dieting doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you start to feel a mood swing coming on, just remind yourself that you CHOSE this.. it's a choice. If it's that bad and makes you miserable.. maybe it was the wrong one. Enjoy the process! ;)

Q: When you first started competing, were there any competitors you looked up to?
A: Absolutely! and I still do! I've always been a huge fan of Jen Hendershott's routines! Her personality and attitude she displays on stage is simply amazing! Monica Brant is always one who I've admired physique wise. I love watching her video from when she did train for fitness. There are MANY MANY more that I look up to and have for years... but there are simply too many to name! I can pretty much narrow it down and say that each and every person to ever step on stage I look up to, because that is an accomplishment in and of itself!

Ashley Taylor Interview

Ashley Taylor refers to MMA as a hobby, not a career. Yes, her hobby is getting punched in the face, and punching others in the face. While some others may refer to MMA in the same way, those are the people who usually don't put everything they have into getting better, knowing they need to improve, and what they need to improve on. Ashley has the right attitude, knowing there is always a need to improve. If she keeps going like that, Ashley is going to end up being pretty damn good at her "hobby".

Q: First, Ashley I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I'm 26 years old, engaged and a mother to 3 beautiful children. I work full time at a pig plant called Cargill. In spare time I enjoy workout out, training, being outside, country rides, shopping, tanning..... I enjoy mma fighting and have been doing so for almost a year now. I'm full of energy, and a walking firecracker =]

Q: Were you especially athletic growing up? Play any sports?
A: Yes, I played basketball from 5th and 6th grade... skipped a couple years in between but loved the sport. I was a point guard. I also played volleyball. Was MVP my senior year of high school, and I played the role of a setter. [That's where they stick all the short people] haha. Did a year of track in middle school.

Q: What initially got you started training for MMA?
A: The need to lose weight is what basically got me started... It started out as working out... then I watched a female fight [Sarah Goodlaxson] and I thought, wow, I wanna try that.... I trained with her one time, and could barley walk after that training session, but I was addicted. I don't have the time to train as hard as most of those girls fighting, but I do what I can. It's more of a hobby for me. Keeps me in good health, and the rush of getting into the cage is something hard to explain. I've always been a firecracker, and like to stand my ground once in a while. So I choose the legal way... =] In the cage.

Q: Was the training something you picked up fairly easy?
A: At first it was really confusing and hard for me, because others made it look SO easy. I would say it's something that you learn easily... it's more working on it over and over to perfect it to the best of ones ability. I go learn, then take it back to my house, and try to get it down there.... since I can't be at the gym daily.. I have to train myself, with the help of others at my house.

Q: How long did you train before your first fight?
A: The working out part I did about 6 months before my first fight, the actual training to cage fight I started about a month and a half before my first fight... I worked on some things before ever going to a real gym.... but a actual gym training, I'd guess a month and a half.

Q: Was fighting something your family and friends supported?
A: My family really didn't know at first... My dad is always excited to hear the results.. but he's never actually been to one of my fights yet. My fiance is my best support. He's also one of my corner guys. He works with me at home, and he's probably my biggest supporter, most of the time. Friends.... they think it's neat, some watch to watch... others could care less.

Q: Where do you train at now?
A: I usually try to make it to Warrior Concepts in Springfield IL on Saturdays when i don't have to work. My schedule is crazy this time of year ... but when I go train, that's where I go. There amazing there. So dedicated, I admire all of them.

Q: Can you give your overall record so far?
A: 1-1-1 [ 1 win, 1 loss, 1 draw]

Q: Which fight so far is the one you are most proud of?
A: My most recent which was Oct 2 in Quincy IL. It was my draw. I was proud of it because you could see that I've gotten better since my first fight. I learned things and used them. Almost had a arm bar but she slipped out of it. I wanted to stand and bang, and that's what we did. My second fight I didn't throw any punches really... so this time I told myself, there will be more action. She was also my hardest opponent so far. She was VERY quick.

Q: What would you say is your biggest strength and the one thing you most want to improve?
A: My biggest strength would be my strength I guess. I weigh 130 and I can bench my own weight, so that's a plus. Muscle doesn't always help in a fight, but it's a plus I suppose. Another strength would be my heart. I've lost...... and I'm ok with that. As for improvement. EVERYTHING with me needs to improve. With my training schedule.... I do what I can with what I know... So of course improvement is needed. I need to watch my chin.. keep it down... and also follow through with my punches more.

Q: What is the best and worst part of training and competing in the sport?
A: The best part of training and competing is the feeling of showing everyone who said you couldn't do it, that you have done it, and that you will continue to do it, no matter what they say. Stepping into that cage fighting in front of all those people is a feeling that's hard to explain, it's a rush of adrenaline, and it's just a amazing feeling. The worst part of it is taking the chance of getting injured... and some training days don't always go so well, you have to keep your head up... everyone has there bad days.... and sometimes in training you can be hard on yourself.

Q: Are there any fighters you are a fan of or love to watch?
A: I'm a fan of many.. local females would be Sarah Goodlaxson [which she moved now so shes not so local] Cathy Snell is amazing at what she does, I'm ready to see her fight again.... I loved training with her also. I'm a HUGE Joe Jordan fan. Matt Hughes is amazing... I love watching Tuff N Uff replays on youtube also... One day I might actually get to go watch one in real life =]

Q: In your opinion, who are the top five female fighters in the sport pound for pound?
A: Of course Cyborg is number one. She's a beast. Megumi Fuji is another strong fighter, out of Japan but she has submissions like crazy... Sarah Kaufman, Tara LaRosa and Erin Toughill.

Q: Do you ever see a major U.S. women's only company being viable?
A: I'd have to say probably not in the Pro world. It would be nice, but I know in just the amateur world it seems like a lot of the females don't go through with there fights... there are just a lot of back-outs with females... There are many pro women fighters out there, but we've only heard of the big time ones. As for all female fight cards, this is happening a lot, and its very exciting.

Q: Often you watch a show that has one women's fight. Somehow that fight always turns out to be the most exciting fight on the card. Why do you think that is? A: Because women are ready to get down. Women like getting in there, showing people that it CAN be done. We learn the same way a man does, just with less strength. It's kind of sexy seeing a women fight, holding her ground.. throwing punches... females are just as capable as whooping butt as males. =]

Q: What is the biggest misconception about female fighters?
A: That we can not train and sweat as much as a man I suppose. Some people are unaware of our strengths... Alot of people say women should be in the kitchen, but as for me... that's not my place.. I can't cook very well, haha.

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to train for the sport, whats the biggest piece of advice you would give her?
A: Never give up, if it's something you want to do... do it. Don't let your friends hold you back. If someone makes fun of you for it, let them. Your the bigger person.. Your the one stepping into the cage, your the one with the courage to fight. Don't let someone else make your decisions for you. Plus it's a great type of workout.

Q: Outside of training and fighting, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I enjoy shopping of course. I do a lot of online shopping... I work full time and have 3 children so my activities are limited. We're outside people.. we love four wheeler riding... going out on the river... fishing...

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Ashley Taylor?
A: I get woke up at 6 a.m. with my fiance coming home from work. I try to catch some more sleep until 7:15 a.m. Get my oldest son ready and off to school... Then it's breakfast time for myself and my other 2 children. Then we all head down to the workout room. I try to do about 2 hours....... but I feel really good when I get about 3-4 hours in. Then it's lunch-time... and time to get ready for work... Work from 2-midnight... Come home.. Sometimes get another 1-2 hour workout in.. Depends on how I'm feeling. and that's a typical day. [When I'm not sick, and my energy level is up, haha]

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: That I work at a pig plant. People who don't know me and look at me say "Girl you don't look like you'd work in a pig plant".. But I do, I use a wizard knife and shave off fat from the butts of pigs. I really do love my job, and it's pretty easy.

Q: Describe Ashley Taylor in five words.
A: Spunky, Open-minded, Blond, Short, annnnd............. Funny =]

Q: So whats next for you? Any idea when you will be fighting again?
A: I was supposed to fight December 4th but my fiances Christmas party is that night. So I had to say no. My next fight will most likely be Jan 22 in Quincy IL for Extreme Challenge.

Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: I'd like to give a shoutout to "Widow-maker Fight Sports" for all there support. They always keep in touch, and if I need something, they take care of it. A wonderful sponsor, and they have a great line of fight shorts, rash guards, etc... Facebook them =] Also thanks to Respect No Respect for the clothes they have supplied for me. I'd like to thank Warrior Concepts for putting in the time to help me on the Saturdays that I can make it. =] Another shoutout to my fiance, who pushes me more and more daily. Helps me with mitts, and really pushes for me to better myself for my fights. And last a thank you to Extreme Challenge and Chad Bergmier for letting me on your shows. =] It's a great experience.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so, how can they reach you and what are they getting in Ashley Taylor the fighter and person?
A: If someone wants to get there clothing name out there, I'll wear it. =] I'm sure to be on some televised events someday. I've been asked but schedule wise, I haven't had the opportunity to actually be able to say yes, and appear. They can reach me by facebook, or email taylor_ashley_@hotmail.com ....

Q: Ashley again, I want to thank you for doing this. Any last words before you go? A: Thank you very much for allowing me to do this for you. =] It was my first, and hopefully won't be my last. I hope to continue fighting for a few more years. It's a hobby for me not a career. I do it for fun. It's entertaining, and keeps me healthy and going strong. Thank you once again.

NAAFS Proving Grounds Report

On December 11th the NAAFS put on their first installment of the Proving Ground Series. This series is a brilliant idea and a great way for young and newer fighters to earn a shot on the bigger stage. Many fighters here made their debuts and most were early in their careers. Shows like this are a great way for you to see young talent before they become stars. I was impressed with several fighters, including Chris Green, Tyler Saltsman, and Lalani Malley. Malley is a female fighter who is going to do big things in the sport. This show was another example of why, if you live in the area you need to attend NAAFS shows.

1. Amateur Featherweight

Jon Wilcox (0-0 American Muscle MMA) vs Mike Putnam (1-1 Team Titan PA)

RD 1: Both come out swinging. Putnam pushed him against the cage and lands some good strikes. Back in the middle of the cage Putnam lands a good punch and and then catches an attempted kick by Wilcox and puts him down but decides to let him back up. Same thing happened again with Putnam catching the leg kick attempt. Putnam lands a solid shot to the body and Wilcox answers with a leg kick. Putnam lands a nice three punch combo and then drops him with a body punch and begins ground and pound forcing the ref to stop it.

Result: Putnam by TKO 2:37 of RD 1

2. Amateur Lightweight
Joe Loftis (0-0 Uniontown, OH) vs Jeremy Smith (0-0 Evolve MMA)

RD 1: Loftis lands a leg kick early. Smith gets a very nice takedownand Loftis begins looking for a guillotine. Some nice grappling going on here. They stand back up and Smith tries for another takedown. Both landed good punches and then Loftis gets the takedown ut Smith lands on top and Loftis again goes for a choke from the bottom. Smith moves to side control but Loftis is able to then pull guard. Standing up both throw wild shots to end the round.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Smith
Due to a shoulder injury Smith could not continue.
Result: Loftis by TKO 3:00 of RD 1

3. Amateur Heavyweight
Levi Humm (0-0 American Muscle MMA) vs Nick Dowe (0-0 Kim's Martial Arts)

RD 1: Dowe lands a big right and gets a takedown and lands ground and pound for a quick win when the ref stops it.

Result: Dowe by TKO :25 of RD 1

4. Amateur Light Heavyweight

OJ Vickers (4-8 AMS) vs Jon Pipkins (2-6 Independent)

RD 1: Vickers lands a nice leg kick early. Pipkins clicnehs and pushed him against the cage but Vickers gets a takedown. Both trying hard to get position. Pipkins is able to pull guard. VIkcers was trying to land some shots but was unable to get much on them. The ref stands them up. Vickers lands an accidental low blow. VIckers throws a kick but it is blocked and he falls down. Pipkins goes downa after gim but Vikcers ends up on top at the end.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Vickers

RD 2: Pipkins throw an accidental low blow to stop the action right away. Pipkins lands good leg kicks and gets the takedown but ends up on bottom and pulls guard. 2010 Real Women Awards

First to explain how the nominees were selected. I had very little say in it. In each division I had several fighters or competitors help. So I was just one voice. Those who helped will not be revealed unless they choose to reveal themselves.
How do you vote? Voting is done only by email. You email to elway78@netzero.com with your picks. One pick per category. You do not have to vote for every single award. You can only vote from an email address once. Multiple votes from the same address will result in none of your votes counting. However if you have multiple email address's then in theory I suppose you are able to vote from each one since there is no way I can track that.
Winners do not actually receive anything other than recognition on a fairly popular blog and fan page. Voting runs through the last day of January.
In most cases there will be five nominees listed in alphabetical order by last name. In a couple situations, due to the way the picking nominees process was done, there will be six nominees and in one case, seven nominees. For the interview awards, they are for all interviews, not just the ones from 2010 since it started shortly before 2010. In most categories you are considered pro or amateur based on what you entered 2010 as. For categories about 2011 it will be what you ended 2010 as as opposed to what you entered as.

Sarah Farr Interview

It is going to be hard, I know. But STOP looking at the photos for a minute. Sarah Farr is a competitor I was introduced to, having little knowledge of her before hand. What I learned is not only is she beautiful and with an incredible physique. She is also a very nice woman and the kind of person you can easily root for. She has competed in a few shows and done well for herself, and at the 2011 Arnold's I expect Sarah to really make a name for herself and become a big name in the fitness industry. Sarah did a really good interview and I am excited to present it to you. OK, you can look at the photos again, but make sure you read the interview to.

Q: First, Sarah, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Thank you. I'm honored to be asked!

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I am 33 years young and a registered nurse. I work one full and one part time job, both in operating rooms. I LOVE the gory stuff in the OR. Orthopedics is my favorite specialty. I have been married to my husband Ken for eight years. We don't have any children, just a pit bull, a chihuahua, a cat, and two hairless rats. I am the middle child of three girls. I am a native of Austin, Texas and absolutely love it here.

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: I grew up pretty active in sports. I rode horses, played volleyball, and ran track. In middle school I was four seconds off the state record in the two mile and held the record at my school until about two years ago. I tried to play basketball, but I'm so clumsy that I wasn't any good at it.

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: My husband bought me my first gym membership at Gold's. He convinced me that fit chicks were hot and it was all downhill from there!

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: I guess so. I never really had any trouble with it and really enjoyed weight training. I started to see results very quickly. I think my body likes to train and be fit. I don't put on a lot of muscle easily, but the definition does come fairly quickly as I have always been pretty slim.

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: A friend of mine invited me to watch a figure competition in August of 2008 and I knew I was hooked immediately. I had planned to have foot and shoulder surgery the following January. Three days after surgery I was in the gym with one crutch and my arm in a sling doing anything I could to workout. I really began training hard by April and did my first competition that October.

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: They were all really surprised that I was willing to wear so little clothing in front of people! As a kid I was always super conservative. I never even liked wearing a swimsuit or low necked shirts, so this was a big shock for them. My husband and little sister have been my biggest cheerleaders. They have both been to all my shows with me. My dad is a little apprehensive still about seeing his little girl up on stage in a bikini so he's only been to one show, but supports me from home. My mom came to my first two shows but works a bunch and it's hard for her to get away.

Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about?
A: Every show I compete in there is something that surprises me! I guess the craziest thing was the spray tanning experience. My first time getting spray tanned in a room full of naked orange chicks was VERY weird for me! I had no idea. This is the kind of thing you really need to be told before you go so you can be mentally prepared!
Another surprising thing was how nice everyone was. I had been told not to trust anyone and that everybody is out to sabotage you. I'm sure that there are people like that out there, but so far everybody has been friendly with me. I am pretty outgoing and VERY talkative, so I can make friends with strangers easily.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: My first show was the Texas State Championships in Stafford, TX. This was supposed to be a warmup show for me. I competed in bikini because we didn't think I'd be ready for figure that early. I think we underestimated my metabolism! I thought I looked really good, but I was a little too muscular and didn't really have the right look for bikini. I placed LAST! Ughhh!
My second show was the Lackland Classic in San Antonio, Texas. I placed first in figure B class.
My last show for this season was The Excalibur in LA where I placed sixth in my class.
This year, I started off with first in my class at the Capitol of Texas Roundup and then six days later I got first in my class at The Europa Super Show. I was SOOOOOOO shocked I almost fell off the stage! What an honor!

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: My best body part is my stomach. I naturally have a pretty good six pack. Second, I would say is my butt-however, it's the first thing to go when I'm not watching my diet!!!

Q:Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: I really like to train shoulders because I love how they look when I put the right amount of work in. I have to be really careful though because I've already had surgery on one of them and they are generally one of those areas that I have to watch really closely to prevent re-injury. I also like to go to the track and do sprints and exercise drills. Its always very uncomfortable when I'm doing it, but the feeling afterwards is awesome. This is the best way for me to lean up my legs and put on muscle at the same time.

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: I try to eat clean all the time. I eat 6-8 times a day every 2-3 hours. I eat lots of egg whites, chicken, and lean fish. I live on bell peppers all the time. I love the orange and yellow ones. They are a great source of fiber and fill me up when I'm dieting. For my carbs I eat oatmeal, quinoa, and sweet potatoes. I also supplement with BNRG's Proto Whey. Chocolate is my favorite flavor. For my fats I eat raw almonds, avocados, and flax seeds. When I'm dieting for a contest my diet is pretty much the same, just with lower calories and fat.
My weightlifting schedule is the same on and off season. I lift 4-5 times a week. I have a shoulder, back, and leg day, and one where I do a lot of full body exercises. I mix in plyometrics, abs, and calves on all of these days. Off season I do about twenty to thirty minutes of cardio four times a week and on season I do 45 minutes six days a week. I count my track workouts as cardio and also like the step mill. For the record, I am part of a group that doesn't really believe in off and on season. You're always training! When its off season you're putting on muscle, when it's on season you're doing the same while leaning up at the same time.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: Everyone always wants to know what my ab workout is! I always tell them that abs are made in the kitchen not in the gym. I don't really do a whole lot of abdominal stuff and never anything with weights for abs. This allows me to keep my waist smaller. Overall though, everyone is really positive. The people I work with are always the most surprised that I compete. They see me in baggy scrubs everyday and have no idea that I'm so fit underneath all the layers we wear! The only negatives I get are about my diet. People always tell me that I'm crazy to deprive myself of so much and tell me to "take just one bite"! I HATE that. I know how I am and I can't take just one bite. I'll eat the whole freaking cake! Knowing this keeps me from ever cheating. I can honestly say that the entire time I've dieted for competitions I have not cheated one time! NOT ONCE!!!

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: I guess that would have to be about the diet. People can't understand how I can eat the exact same thing everyday for twelve weeks. Most people don't understand how important diet is. Working for a hospital around sick people, I can say that it is the leading cause of the majority of the illnesses and injuries that I see everyday.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: Lifting weights often WILL NOT MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A DUDE!!!!! I don't look like a man, do I? People think that you'll turn into a bodybuilder overnight. If they only knew what went into obtaining a physique like that.
The other thing is that we are not all taking steroids! I get asked this all the time. I've never tried them and don't want to. You can be fit and lean without them.

Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The best parts are the relationships you make, the way you learn about who you really are and what's in your heart, the accomplishments you can make, and the way you can take control of your body and completely change your physique.
The worst part is the stress it puts on your relationships. It's a very selfish sport and takes up so much time that you would normally spend with family or friends. Its also so expensive that I've taken a second job just to help pay for everything. This cuts into my free time even more. I generally work 50-60 hours a week, so with training and commuting time there isn't much left.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: My favorite competitor in Monica Brant. I met her right after I first started training for figure and discovered that we were neighbors. I've trained with her since then and we've become really good friends. I admire her for continuing to compete even when she knew what the outcome would be before she stepped on stage. Being a competitor, I know what you put into it and sacrifice for just one show. She did this knowing she was just doing it for the fans with no chance of a trophy or a check. I'm glad to see her in the WBFF now and in the top spot again where she belongs!

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: I love candy. Its my weakness. The sour stuff really gets me. I can't even keep it in the house. The other thing is Papa Murphy's extra cheese extra pepperoni pizza. YUMMMMMMM

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Get a good trainer. Ask around and do your research before you hire somebody. There are people out there who don't know what they're doing and those that are just in it for themselves. You can't do it without good help. It comes down to whether you want to win or not. It's that important!!
The other thing is DON'T CHEAT ON YOUR DIET! Nobody will ever know if you do it but you. Everything you put in your mouth makes a difference and your trainer can't help you if you're lying to them about what you eat. Diet is one of the most important parts of competing!

Q: Is fitness modeling something that interests you?
A: Absolutely! I've done a couple of photoshoots and felt so at home in front of the camera. I think that there needs to be more emphasis on the fit physique instead of just the skinny ones. Its a beautiful thing and younger people need more role models like this!
Since I was a little girl I've always wanted to be a fitness model!

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: You know, I work so much that there isn't really much time for anything else. I do wish that I could ride horses more. That's always been something that's in my heart.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Sarah Farr?
A: I get up at 6:30 in the morning and get ready for work. My commute is about an hour so this is the time I take to catch up with my family and friends on the phone. Lets just say that I have the unlimited plan on my iphone! God gave me the gift of gab big time!!! I work in a big hospital here in Austin full time, so during my twelve hours a day here I will circulate (that's what they call a surgery nurse-a circulator) cases ranging from open hearts, brains, backs, abdominal cases, plastic surgery, gynecology, and orthopedics. It's generally a pretty busy day for me. When my shift is over, I head to the gym for some cardio and weights then head home for some sleep before I do it all over again five days a week. During contest prep I always do my cardio in the morning, so I'm up at 5:30 instead.

Q: Describe Sarah Farr in five words.
A: Crazy, Wild, Emotional, Loving, Dedicated

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I have hairless rats! I know! People are eeeeekkkkkkking like crazy right now because everyone thinks rats are gross enough with hair! They're actually really cool. I have two of them, "Rat Flesh" and "Raisin". They are really sweet and surprisingly smart. They don't stink either and are actually really great pets.

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: I have been accepted to compete at the Arnold so that's where I'll be in March of 2011. I plan to do a national show after that and try to get that elusive pro card.

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: First, Monica Brant! She's been a great friend and trainer to me and such an inspiration. She has just started doing contest prep and diet for figure and bikini competitors and is so good at it. She really takes a different approach to it that's more holistic and personal. She makes you feel like a person with feelings and not so much like a piece of meat. So anyone interested in doing well in figure should email her at monica@monicabrant.com for more details.
Second, I have been using BNRG's products for over a year now and have really enjoyed them. Their Proto Whey protein and Power Crunch bars are the best. They taste great and are the only protein supplements I've had that haven't torn up my tummy. You can check them out at www.bnrg.com.
Last, I've been using a new product called i26 hyerimmune egg that has really helped my recovery and performance. They also make a product called FLEX that is great for joint support, essential for any athlete. You can check out their great products at www.legacyforlife.com

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Sarah Farr the athlete and competitor?
A: YES! I would love some sponsors, I don't have any right now and would love to not have to work so much to keep competing. I can be reached by email at sfarr1@mac.com.
With me potential sponsors are getting an up and coming figure competitor and athlete with so much potential on the verge of great things. I've done really well in figure so far and hope to continue this trend into my next season. I've been working really hard to get to the Arnold and can't wait to step on the stage in Columbus.

Q: Sarah , again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
A: Thank you so much. It feels good to be able to share all of this with someone. My husband gets tired of hearing it!!! I hope that new or aspiring competitors can find some of this info helpful and I'd love to chat again anytime. Thank you again! XOXO

Tisha "Lil Bully" Rodrigues Interview

Early on when I started doing these interviews I was introduced to a fighter named Tisha Rodrigues. I was told she was a former fitness competitor who is now a promising fighter. I did that interview and since then Tisha is someone who has become a friend who will always have my support. Tisha is preparing for her final amateur fight before turning Pro. If you know Tisha at all, you will know there is no question Tisha will make a great Pro fighter and will make a huge mark in the sport. To know Tisha Rodrigues is to love and be a fan of Tisha Rodrgues.

Q: First Tisha, thanks for taking time to do another interview.
A: My pleasure.

Q: For those who may not be familiar can you tell a little about yourself.
A: I'm an MMA fighter, ammy, I have been in the sport for about 3 and a half years. I feel like I have finally found what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm a mother to three kick ass kids, they truly are one of a kind and I can't complain, they are great!! I'm married to my number one friend, lover, supporter and trainer. I work as an MMA jornalist and writer, personal trainer, marketing director and correspondent for The Next Great Fighter.

Q: Our first Interview was quite some time ago. Whats been going on in your life since then?
A: Oh wow, a ton! I have a new sponsor, who's fantastic, I also work to help promote them, Defense Soap. I recently won the title belt in Expert Div at Naga. I had an interview on me by the awesome Doug Jeffrey for Ultimate MMA Magazine, which was a huge honor as an amateur fighter. I'm going to appear in Fight Magazine after the Holidays as the new ad/face of Defense Soap and I have decided to take the next step in my career and turn Pro.

Q: I know you have a fight scheduled. When is it, where is it, and who is it against?
A: It's on Feb 19th, opponent unknown, in Mansfield, Ma for Full Force Productions.

Q: You used to compete in fitness. Has there ever been a thought of going back to that?
A: Never ever..( bahaha), the diet was just too much, other than that, I had a blast performing my fitness routine! I accomplished what I wanted in Fitness and Figure and I wouldn't have room for it in my life now. I still train women who are interested in competing!

Q: You said the plan was to turn Pro after this fight. Is that the definite plan or does it depend on how this fight goes?
A: It's the MAD plan for def...I'm going to win my last ammy fight and take that leap!

Q: Where have you been training at these days?
A: I train at my second home Team Boneyard in Taunton,Ma, but I also enjoy training at Bert Neves Boxing gym ( my uncle ) and over at Tim Burrills.

Q: Since your last fight, is there one aspect you feel you have improved on the most?A: Well, technically since my second fight. I was lacking in my ground game, so I turned it up a notch...or a few notches and really put my heart and soul into getting better..I'm to the point where I actually want to shoot, take you down and work my ground game...or of course standup. I'm leveling off, but can never stop improving. I'm my toughest critic!

Q: Any idea on how active you would like to be in MMA? For example
> how many fights you would like to have in the next year?
A: I will fight twice per year, I think more than that and you are not giving yourself the chance to actually learn. Work on your weakness, better your strength...always evolve. You even have to learn from your wins. I'm very into the " mental" aspect of the game now and that alone, has made an incredible difference.

Q: Have there been any fighters you have watched lately who have impressed you at all?
A: Lisa Ward and Jessica Aguilar.

Q: Where did the Lil Bully nickname come from?
A: The guys at my gym, mainly my husband gave it to me, I may be the only girl fighter, but I def bully around the boys....(it's unconsciously) how suiting seeing as I was bullied most my life. Also, because of my aggression, I'm certainly not suave in my way of doing things.

Q: Is fitness modeling something that interests you?
A: I will always enjoy fitness modeling, it's no longer my main focus, but it will remain a part of my life.

Q: What do you think is the biggest misconception about women fighters?
A: That there are not enough talented women out there.

Q: When you have free time, any hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love dancing, writing, hiking w my family, reading and scrapbooking.

Q: What is your current training schedule like?
A: I train every morning Mon-Fri cardio and weights, I take Spin Class 2x per week. I wrestle at least once per week. I do strength and cond 2x per week on top of morning training. Jiu Jitsu on Monday nights, then Fight Team, Tue nights when in training, strength and cond, Wed nights, Strength and Cond. Thursday nights Muay Thai, then MMA and Fridays Boxing. I try to cross train every other Sat. When I'm training for a fight my schedule changes.

Q: What is your favorite and least favorite part of training?
A: I love training with guys and I hate training with guys at the same time...otherwise I love it all!!

Q: Do you prefer fighting early on a card or later on the card?
A: Not first, not second...3rd or 4th

Q: Finish this sentence. In five years I will be?
A: Fighting Pro with a clean record on Strikeforce, up for Breakthrough Female Fighter Of The Year!

Q: Any sponsors or anyone else you want to take this time to plug, promote, or thank?
A: You as always Jason, Tussle Fight Gear, Fight Chix, Rising Fighter, Cage Candy, Lead Creative Group, Defense Soap, Triplesix Fight Gear, Gurl Fytrz, Triplesix Fight Wear and MMA Most Wanted.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors?
A: Always looking for new, supportive people to work with in the future!

Q: Tisha, thanks again for doing this. You have become a good friend and someone I personally really admire. Any last words before you go?
A: Just a big thank you to you and all you do and to my amazing friends and supporters out there that always pick me up when I need it and believe in me. My husband Mark, my 3 rugrats and my trainers!!
