KS: Good question
LK: Oy vey
LS: Love it/Hate it... it's a part of the sport
LZ: Can see both sides... not an easy job, the goal is to get them to notice my improvements next year
MW: Would be so hard! LOL I could NOT imagine having to pick the Olympia winners

Part 2: General Questions
1. Why Figure?
AK: Love the muscle and want to show off my hard work.
CB: I love the look of Figure competitors and I am so thrilled that I am actually starting to look like one :-)
ES: I love the look of Figure. It's perfect for my body because it's graceful muscle. Not too big.... not too small.
GS: I have always been a fan of Figure, ever since I opened my first Oxygen magazine and saw the pictures in the back. I love all divisions, but I feel like my physique is structured more like a Figure athlete than Bikini or Bodybuilding.
JH: Figure allows me to train like the athlete that I know I am, but still present myself in a classy and feminine way. I like being able to throw around big heavy dumbells and then put on my sexy suit and heels to show off my hard work!
KS: Figure means something that is what I can control and create through my dedication, sweat, and hard work. It is a personal goal and journey that is always a hunger within me to improve everyday... and have a challenge. To create YOUR physique and to be great and the best at it. True to form :-)
LK: I love to lift weights and play dress up, especially with sparkles!! I love my muscles, my frame and my looks and I believe that Figure is the best way to display them. Plus I love the strict diet and the hard work. I like a challenge! Nothing feels quite as awesome as stepping out on stage after working so hard for that moment! I love competing!!
LS: I really enjoy the Fitness division but don't have the gymnastics background for it.
LZ: Love the glamour and muscle
MW: I love the hard training, diet, the prep... Everything that comes along with it!
MBA: Because I admire the physique of a Figure competitor. Just the right amount of muscle. Plus we get to wear high heels and gorgeous suits
MBE: I started competing back in 2002 and back then I definitely did not have the msucle mass for Bodybuilding, so I tried Figure and fell in love with the sport, being up on stage and the physique I was able to accomplish with hard work
NG: I love everything about the sport. Figure competitors have a beautiful, muscular, yet very feminine physique. For me, Figure has had such a huge impact in my life and I hope it has the same effect for other women
SK: It's challenging, intense, and fun, wih a hint of glamour
TG: Glam, feminine, it suits me better as far as my body type
2. On a scale from 1-10, if ten years ago women training as hard as men in the gym being accepted by society was a 0, what is it today?
AK: I think it is definitely a 10 today.
CB: I think a lot more people are accepting of a woman with muscles but still not nearly enough so maybe a 4.
ES: Maybe a 5.....Sad
GS: I can't believe that I have already been lifting that long! I haven't seen much of a difference in the gym, but I do see working out (maybe not lifting heavy) becoming more mainstream.
JH: Probably about a 7, it is not viewed as odd by most people, but you have a handful that think gyms are only for big burly boys.
LK: 3?
LS: I'd say it's a 7. I think if you are referring to women in the Fitness/Figure division it's probably an 8/9. Women's Bodybuilding I don't think is embraced and supported as much as the other divisions.
LZ: 10
MW: 10
MBA: Probably about a 9. At least in my area
MBE: I think as far as women training as hard as men it is about a 9 today. I think for the most part the area that is still not widely accepted by most of society is female Bodybuilding. I think it is unfortunate because these women work jsut as hard as the men do, but do not get the same amount of credit
NG: Tough... maybe a 3! Most people I encounter still think that a women will get "huge" and look like a man if she trains heavy. It's unfortunate that these myths are still out there
SK: 4
TG: 8-9 Most men seem to respect it, but some hate having to share the gym with us gals....TOUGH!
3. What is the biggest misconception about Figure competitors?
AK: Steroid use, not everyone does it.
CB: That's a good question, better answered by someone with more experience in Figure. One that I hear a lot though is that they all use steroids, or maybe I'm wrong and they do? IDK
ES: I didn't think there was a misconception
JH: That we are bodybuilders.... I ahte trying to explain the difference in Figure, Fitness, and Bodybuilding to people who are clueless about the sport. A lot of people think that any girl with muscle is a Bodybuilder. Also a big misconcpetion is that we are all taking 'supplements'. Not true... some might, but not all.
LK: That we are lean year round :-)
LS: I think there is a big misconception that Figure competitors are bodybuilders. I try to simplify with people and tell them Figure competitiors are Bodybuilders to a lesser degree. We carry more muscle than most women in society..... but it's more about tone, definition, and symmetry then about mass and density.
LZ: That is easy. We are naturally built this way
MW: Our diets... A lot of people think that we hardly eat. No, a lot of us have to eat A LOT! Every 2-2.5 hours :-)
MBA: That they don't have to diet or train as hard as Bodybuilders
MBE: A lot of people who are not really into the sport do not even know what the Figure division is, they just clump it into female bodybuilding or think we perform a routine to music. They do not realize that we have different poses, have a different look to our physiques and have to wear five inch heels up on stage!
NG: In my experience it would be drug use. Most peole seem to assume that you can't obtain a winning Figure physique without the use of drugs and that just isn't the case. There are many, many women that build top level physiques the natural way
SK: All of us are drugged out. We shouldn't lift heavy. We don't work as hard as bodybuilders
TG: We are starving ourselves or that we are doing the equivalent of a bar type bkini contest, that you can't possibly be a spirit filled on fire Christian woman and compete in a bikini...."sigh"
4. How can we make it so the prize money is more even between men and women?
AK: Not sure
CB: I have no idea how to go about it but it needs to be done, I can't believe something so sexist is still allowed in this sport.
ES: Good luck
JH: I doubt that will ever happen. Maybe if we could prove that more people come as spectators to watch the women instead of the men...?
KS: Hmmm, good question
LK: That's a great question!! I wish I knew the answer
LS: I think the only way that happens is if the women divisions are selling out or at least as many tickets as the men. Additionally, more sponsors at shows could help. Quite frankly.... there are more women competitors since there are more divisions so the prize money should be more even.
LZ: No idea LOL
MW: Easy... Split it down the middle
MBA: Boy, good question. Don't know
MBE: That is a tough one. I am not sure, but you would think with the addition of the Bikini division they would be making more money so they could have more money to spread the wealth around to the women of this sport
SK: I think tis is soemthing that needs to happen, but probably never will. Just as in every other professional sport. Although steps in the right direction could be taken if more sponsors would step up for women as well as more coverage of the sport so the general public would get a bit mroe interested
TG: When you figure that out, we'll be making progress LOL!
5. My greatest achievement in the sport so far is?
AK: Winning the Figure Short category at the WBFF Alberta Championships in 2010
CB: My greatest achievement so far is definitely my physique. I am very proud of what I have been able to accomplish.
ES: Winning the battle against doubts in my own head and from those around me that I couldn't do this.
GS: Winning the Overall at the NPC Monster Mash. What an amazing experience!
JH: Turning Pro at the 2010 Team Universe!!! :-)
KS: Just improving my physique and meeting new/great people in this industry by far for me. It is just the beggining and can't wait to see what is next.
LK: Winning 1st place and Overall at the Oklahoma State Championships on June 5th, 2010. Also making it to Junior Nationals and stepping on stage despite a flight cancellation, luggage being lost and a storm that delayed the show! It was a BLAST!!
LS: It would be taking the National stage. I certainly have a ways to go as far as developing my physique but I'd say I'm 50% there
LZ: Stepping on the National stage at 46
MBA: Becoming an IFBB Pro
MBE: My greatest achievement in Figure so far wa qualifying at a large National qualifier and placing 3rd at my first two National level shows in my first year competing after being away from the sport for almsot 7 years
NG: Hands down, winning my IFPA Pro card. I still can't believe the next time I compete, it will be a Pro stage
SK: Just getting on stage and being confident
TG: Consistantly improving each season, each year
6. Train alone or with a partner, and why?
AK: Both. I like training with a partner for cardio because I find it so boring, but sometimes I like to train by myself with weights. Less chatting and more work!
CB: I train alone, I don't have time to wait for someone else LOL.
ES: I prefer to train alone. NO DISTRACTIONS
GS: I like to train with a partner, my husband, especially on heave chest or shoulder days when I need a spotter.
JH: Alone, mostly just because of my schedule. I just get my workouts in around clients so my workout times are always changing.
KS: Alone. I can really push myself and move quick. I am working with my husband now who can really push me but love that alone time too :-)
LK: Alone. I get into this frame of mind when I train and am extrememly focused. Hard to reach the same point with a partner. I tend to get too easily distracted with a partner unless it's my coach.
LS: Depends. If it is a partner who can keep up with me and knows how to get me to push/pull one more rep then I'm all for it.
LZ: Both. Love partner. The male pushes me and the female, we push each other...alone, have to reach deep
MW: I prefer training alone. I like to be able to focus and I don't like to rest long between sets. However, I do like to go to the gym with my dad or brother. It's nice to get a spotter here and there. Helps you go so much heavier and to push through the sticking points
MBA: Tough one. I like to train with someone if they are dependable. Having a spotter allows me to go a little heavier and push me through those last reps
MBE: I usually train alone or with ym trainer. Every once in a while when I am off season I will train with a friend, but I look at this sport as my second job and when I am at the gym I am there to accomplish a task and to get myself closer to my goals and dreams of becoming an IFBB Figure Pro
NG: It's nice to train with a partner every now and then, but I prefer to train alone. I get in a zone, I'm focussed and in the gym to get things done
SK: Alone.... partners seem to slow me down with chatter. I prefer plugging my ears with blaring music and pushing myself to my limits
TG: Both.... Mostly with my husband and a friend of mine, but every now and then when the hubby is away, I make it work into my schedule to go alone, because sometimes, you just gotta!
7. What is the most ridiculous comment or question you have heard from someone the first time they saw your physique?
AK: "Wow, you must not eat very much." Ya right!
CB: "How much do you bench press?" People don't understand that bodybuilding and powerlifting are completely different sports.
ES: "Do you "like" being THAT big??"
GS: Hmmm... I don't know if this first the bill, but when people see my progress pictures before they meet me, they think I am much bigger than I actually am!
ES: A girl in Sam's CLub once asked me... "Do you take those proteins?".... I'm not sure what that question really means. LOL> I responded with "well.... I eat protein if that's what your referring to."
KS: "How much can you bench?" teehee
LK: "Do you workout?"
LS: "How much do you bench?" I get that quite often as if bench pressing is the absolute measure of your strength
LZ: "Your to skinny", "Do you workout?"
MW: I know someone looked at my picture and said " Why would you want to do that to yourself?"... LOL Really? You learn to let things go in one ear and out the other :-)
MBA: I get this all the time (almost everyday) "Do you workout?" The enxt person that asks me that question, I am going to respond "No, I was born this way."
MBE: "How much can you bench press?" Really??? I am a Figure competitor not a powerlifter. Please come up with something more original guys
NG: I had someone ask me what supplements I take. When I told them BCAA's, Whey, and Creatine, they said "Oh, I figured you were using something" I was stunned.
SK: Just got one the other day, it is probably not the most ridiculous comment, but the first one that came to mind... "Damn...you're..dense.. I mean that as a compliment.".... Not sure what "dense" meant, but I'll take it haha
TG: "OMG you look anorexic"
8. My favorite part to train is__ but my least favorite is__?
AK: Favorite: Everything, Least favorite : Nothing
CB: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Legs
ES: Favorite: LEGS, Least favorite: Abs and calves
GS: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: I don't really have a least favorite, but I seem to skimp on abs and calves the most.
JH: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Bi's and Tri's
KS: Favorite SHOULDERS, Least favorite: I honestly don't have a least favorite. It used to be legs but I love the challenge now!
LK: Favorite: Back, Least favorite: Chest
LS: Favorite: I love, love, love training shoulders, Least favorite: Legs used to be my least favorite to train byt they are slowly growing on my as I have focused my efforts in balancing my physique and bringing up my legs
LZ: Favorite: Back, Least favorite: Dont have a least favorite. I love everyday
MW: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: I love training all groups, but if I HAD to pick my least favorite it would be Abs
MBA: Favorite: Back, Least favorite: Legs
MBE: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Legs because they hurt
NG: Favorite: Back, Least favorite: Chest
SK: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Abs
TG: Favorite: Back and Bi's, Least favorite: Legs because it is exhausting, but I'm learning to LOVE legs!!
9. Who is the most underrated Figure competitor right now?
AK: Not sure, probably local girls around here that I know that do not get enough recognition.
CB: Too many awesome physiques out there to pick one.
ES: Heather Grace
GS: Ooooh! I would love to see both Latisha Wilder and Rosalind Vanderpool place higher. I love both of their physiques.
JH: Hmmm... I really like Akane Nirgo-Ismel's look. I'd like to see her placing higher in the Pro ranks.
KS: I would have to say Larissa Reis! She has a lot of muscle and is ripped!! I think she is stunning
LK: Well... Pro I think Alicia Harris should've won first the last couple shows she did. Also I was bummed to not see Ava Cowan in the top three at her last couple of shows, she was freaking JAKKKKED!! Looked awesome!
LS: Kristal Richardson
LZ: Monica Brant
MW: Ava Cowan. I kind of think she was screwed over at some shows she did this year
MBE: Me...HAHA! Just kidding.... I know from siouxcountry that Rosalind Vanderpool has come in with a great physique this year, but did not get good placings at her shows
NG: Erin Stern. Her physique is beautiful and I hope she soon starts getting the recognition she deserves
SK: Two actually... Shelly and Betsy Albetta
TG: Well she's someone I became familiar with recently and that is Carin Hawkins. I haven't heard too much about her, but I love her physique and love her stage presence!
10. If I had my choice between being on the cover of Oxygen or Muscle & Fitness, I would choose?
AK: Oxygen, because that is why I started training!
CB: I would choose BOTH haha
ES: EITHER ONE IS A HUGE HONOR!!! lets just say I wouldn't be picky choosy lol
GS: They are both great
JH: Probably Oxygen, mostly because it appeals to so many everyday/mainstream women who need help but don't know what or who to turn to.
KS: Muscle and Fitness!1 HARDCORE
LK: Oh that's a mean question. Either!
LS: Oxygen.... would have a greater impact with society
LZ: Love them both but if I had to..... Muscle & Fitness
MW: Dang that's though! Probably Muscle & Fitness because they usually have men on the covers, so they need a change!!!
MBA: Probably Muscle & Fitness since it applies to men and women where as Oxygen is just geared towards women
MBE: I can't choose! To be on the cover of either magazine would be an honor and a dream come true!
NG: I have read both, but to choose one, I'd go with Msucle & Fitness
SK: Hmmmm.... I'd take either, but I'd probably be happier with Msucle & Fitness
TG: I'd have to choose? I can't LOL
11. The best thing about the sport is?
AK: The dedication and the feeling of accomplishment.
CB: Meeting new people, I love hanging out backstage getting to know the girls!
ES: Making improvements each time you get on stage
GS: The challenge, setting goals, and the life-style. I love it all.
JH: The self battle, I love that my biggest competitor and critic is myself.
KS: How independent the sport is in regard to training and overall
LK: Watching my body transformation during contest prep and during off season!! I lvoe change and I am constantly taking part in it!
LS: Pushing yourself to the limits
LZ: Self discipline, strength, and meeting many great inspiring people
MW: The whole process. Training, cardio, diet, contest prep, meeting all the people in the industry along the way, etc.
MBA: The people that I have met. I avhe met all of my closest friends through this sport and now they are truly my family
MBE: It gives women the opprtunity to set and accomplish goals at any age and to change their bodies to be able to compete in Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, or Bikini
NG: The family-like bond between competitors. There is something we share that is so unique, very few people understand
SK: The girls involved, the support system I've found, the amount of confidence and happiess it's brought to my life
TG: Leaning SO much about yourself and what you are capable of, as soon as you think you can't possibly endure any more, you have the opportunity to dig deeper and go further. Also the PEOPLE you meet and friendships you make!! The BEST!!
12. In the movie of my life, __ would play me?
AK: Jessica Biel because she is in good shape, actually has muscle.
CB: I have no idea.
ES: Carmen Electra!
GS: Hmmmmm....
JH: Jessica Biel....she's just a bad ass
KS: Erin Stern! teehee
LK: A movie of my life? I don't know! I guess I would like to play myself, it'd be fun and I have the memories and all the emotions that go along with them that would make the movie what it's supposed to be.
LS: Tough question...don't know
LZ: Sandra Bullock
MBA: I believe Jennifer Aniston would play me since I ahve been told I look like her (just wish I had her earnings) :-)
MBE: The woman that played Xena the Warrior Princes! LOL
NG: Drew Barrymore. We don't look alike but she's a little goofy and I like that :-)
SK: People say I look like Julia Styles... so I'd pick her :-)
TG: Kelly Ripa Hands down
13. In five years I will be?
AK: A Pro card holder on the cover of Oxygen.
CB: An IFBB Pro and well established in my fitness career so that I don't have to work my day job anymore :-)
ES: OMG! Who knows.... I live for today! It's in God's hands
GS: A mother, maybe. I see myself training hard and eating healthy regardless of where I am in my life.
JH: Who knows!!! Isn't that the beauty of life? Hopefully I will have stepped on the Olympia stage by then....
KS: An IFBB Pro
LK: Ms. Figure Olympia :-) And hopefully back in school for my Masters degree in nursing for my Pediatric Nurse Practitioner's license.
LS: An IFBB Pro! Maybe...LOL
LZ: An established personal trainer, Figure suit designer, and IFBB Pro
MW: Graduated from college with my teaching degree and hopefully a Pro card in Figure!.. and still going
MBA: I will be married and hopefully have competed at the Arnold and Olympia
MBE: AN IFBB Figure Pro and maybe a mom
NG: Working in the veterinary field and representing on the Pro stage
SK: Who knows! I've changed so much just in this past year, it's hard to say. I'm excited to find out....
TG: AN IFPA Pro for sure!
14. If I could trade body parts with another competitor I would want the __ of __?
AK: Abs of Ava Cowan.
CB: Abs of anyone who has a 6 pack! I hope I get one someday :-(
ES: Lower half of Erin Stern. HANDS DOWN
GS: I would trade....... my entire body for Monica Brant's! LOL! I've seen some pretty recent pics and videos of her floating around cyberspace, and, wow..... phenomenal.
JH: The butt of Erin Stern
LK: Legs of Larissa Reis! I'm working on them!
LS: Lats and Legs of Erin Stern
LZ: I wouldn't
MW: Honestly... I wouldn't. I want to build my body up. I feel good with the foundation I have. Just takes time :-)
MBA: Glutes/Abs of Gina Aliotti
MBE: Back of Erin Stern
NG: Glutes/Hammies of Gina Aliotti
SK: Everything of Monica Brant. But if I had to choose one part....abs
TG: Legs of Monica Brant, the Shoulders of Valerie Haines, and the abs, glutes and back of Nicole Weeks!
15. My dream sponsor would be?
AK: Gaspari Nutrition.
CB: Anyone who believes in me
ES: BSN or Under Armour
GS: There are so many great companies out there, it is hard to choose!
JH: Gaspari.... they seem to take a lot of pride in their athletes
KS: Muscle Tech
LK: Weider Publications and Muscle Tech
LS: I would say VPX... I use more supplements from them, however I like different supps from a variety of different companies.
MW: There are a lot of great companies out there. I'd be honored to be sponsored by any of them.
MBA: Optimum Nutrition
MBE: I am currently sponsored by a great company with great products USPlabs, but I would also love the opportunity to one day be sponsored by a company that promotes their athletes in this sport in magazines like Gaspari or a clothing company like Under Armour
NG: Gaspari or ON/ABB, not only do they ahve great products but I lvoe how their ad campaigns promote strong women
SK: Gaspari

AK: Not sure, I get bored so easily I am always downloading new music.
CB: I listen to Pandora radio, I love the variety
ES: Too many to mention. ALL METAL and HOUSE music
GS: There is such a broad range of music on there, I can't choose... from Eva Cassidy to Rage Against the Machine.... Lady Gaga, The Beatles.... it depends on my mood.
JH: I actually dont program songs on my IPOD, I just put it on Pandora and let it play so I don't hear the same songs over and over. I really like the Kesha station though.
KS: Disturbed, Korn, Foo's, Black Eyed Peas

Competitors Edge by IFBB Pro Vanessa Prebyl
A Weekly Blog By IFBB Pro Bikini Competitor Vanessa Prebyl
Hello my readers!!!
This week’s blog is about HEART! If you are a competitor or if you have ever worked hard for a goal you know what heart is. I define heart as passion, determination, will, strength, love, endurance, and power. To be in the fitness industry you must have heart.
Many feel that heart is something you are born with or that it is a personality type. However, the people that feel this way may have not found a goal they want to achieve strong enough.
My suggestion to any person who would like to become more intense in their lives or develop more heart is to watch the following movies:
1. Rocky I, Rocky II, Rocky IV
2. Pumping Iron
3. Rudy
4. Vision Quest- old wrestling movie
5. Karate Kid – Original one
6. Dodge ball- yes, the comedy
7. Forrest Gump
8. The Rookie
9. The blind side- Sandra Bullock in the movie is a great example of HEART.
10. Additionally, any of the videos produced by Ronnie Colman, Jay Cutler, and Jenny Lynn are also very inspirational.
Competitors must be able to push themselves farther than others expect; therefore, find your goal in life and get passionate about it. Put your HEART in to it and you will be amazed at your accomplishments!
I hope you all have a great weekend :)

The Significance of Numbers by Trisha Barr
Athletes of all sorts understand what it is to become obsessed with numbers, whether they’re numbers on a scale or on a win record. Bodybuilders and fitness competitors are all too familiar with this: Where did they place in their last contest, and how do they improve or maintain their placement in the next? How many more hours of cardio will they have to do in order to make that scale budge enough in their favor? How many more calories and grams of carbs will they have to cut to reveal six-pack abs?
As a mixed martial artist, I definitely relate. I, too, have to make weight via hours of cardio and calorie-cutting. It’s a science that I’m still learning to master. I also have to make sure that I spend the greatest amount of my training time in the dojo working my skill sets and growing as a martial artist. But the most significant number to the average MMA fighter is that win-to-loss ratio. It can literally keep a person awake at night, which I know from experience. But as I’ve come to learn, that number can sometimes be deceptive.
This past Saturday, watching Kentucky’s all-female event, “Absolute Action MMA presents Battle against Breast Cancer,” this very idea returned to me. There was one particular fighter (and many readers might know who this is) who could boast of an awesome amateur record; however, her pro record does not reflect that at all. This was my second time seeing her fight, and both times I could not help but think, “This is someone who turned pro too soon.” Her am record is deceiving: Yes, she had a decent amount of experience; yes, she had much more wins than she did losses. But whom did she fight? What kind of experience and training did her opponents have? Could she say that she defeated a variety of fighters – wrestlers, strikers, Jiu Jitsu stylists, or otherwise? These are all questions that a mixed martial artist should ask him/herself before making that major decision to go pro. These are all questions that I intend to ask myself before making that choice someday, for there is no going back at that point.
I do not mean to pick on just one fighter because I’ve seen this plenty of times, including a few other competitors on that same card. She is just one example. And I use this as a warning to myself and others, not to be judgmental. The funny thing is, on the opposite end of the spectrum, I’ve seen fighters whom I thought were very talented despite their poor records. This can happen for a variety of reasons that I won’t go into this time.
As for myself, I admit that I do not have the greatest record. Among the reasons for this, one is that I’m still learning to get past the nervousness that comes when people are counting on me to perform well. Another big reason is because I made a very common mistake: I underestimated just how much time I would need training specifically for this sport (another important number that I had personally neglected at first). I had a Kempo background, but virtually no grappling abilities. I thought that training Jiu Jitsu for a couple months would prepare me sufficiently in case the fight went to the ground. Then I was naïve enough to take my very first fight against an accomplished BJJ practitioner. The result: I managed to land two punches before getting taken to the ground and rear naked choked in just forty seconds of the first round. Needless to say, it was an extremely humiliating yet eye-opening experience.
I’ve come a long way since then, and I know that I still have a long way to go. Contrary to one commentator’s statement at the “Battle against Breast Cancer,” losses do not necessarily lead to a loser’s mentality. I never think, “Oh well, it’s just another loss.” Entirely the opposite! Every loss has driven me to train harder and become better. I want the victory that much more the next time. To put it bluntly, losing still sucks…a lot! But at least that bit of good can come out of it.
Conclusion: For those who have not had their first ammy fight yet, there is no need to rush. Your significant number is in quality training time. (For example, try three to four days per week for one to two years, working both standup and ground.) For those who already compete as amateurs, do not rush into turning pro. First, make sure that you are not just a good amateur fighter. That might not cut it at the next level. Tell yourself this: I have to look, feel, and perform like a pro before I turn pro. This means more than just a good am record. It means being well-rounded and defeating a variety of challenging opponents. For those who do not have the best am record, try not to be discouraged or obsessive about it. Of course, strive to improve it. But remember, this experience is preparing you for when the numbers really count – when that amateur record is rendered practically meaningless and you get a fresh start with a professional record. I am looking forward to that day! In the meantime, I keep fighting, training, and improving.

IFBB Pro Kat Ramirez Interview

This is easily one of the interviews I am most excited to post. When I first started this, Kat Ramirez was one of the people I really became interested in quickly. I thought her physique was simply outstanding. Then several people kept saying things like "You should try and interview Kat Ramirez" quite often. I soon realized, that in an industry where you are bound to hear something negative about everyone by at least one person, there was seriously no one who ever said anything even close to negative about Kat. The only question is what is more inspiring, her journey that led her to the gym and to competing, all the way to her Pro card, or the woman she has become since then? So for all you people who kept saying to interview her, here it is, and I am HONORED to be able to present it.

Q: First, Kat, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Thank you Jason for giving me the opportunity
Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I was Born in the Dominican Republic, in the capital of Santo Domingo and was raised in a very dangerous neighborhood called Los minas, (The Mines). I descend from a very strict family. Even to talk, you had to raise your hand and wait till you were given the ok to speak.
Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: Yes I was. Although I wasn't raised by my mother, she lived in curacao and worked her butt off to give me everything I needed. I was in the swimming team and gymnastic team from the only big sports venue we had in DR, Estadio Olimpico de Santo Domingo. Through junior high to high school, I played all sports, from handball, softball, volleyball etc. I was pretty much a very active kid
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: Well, it all started with having to grow up pretty fast, getting married at the age of 16, and getting divorce once I realized I wasn't happy. It was a painful process, but I was tired of feeling sorry for myself, and decided to turn my sadness into empowerment. That's when days started looking brighter again.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: I would say yes, just because of how I was brought up. In the states, I can tell you that we are spoiled compared to how it is back in DR. From a young age we had to hold our own.. water was scarce and many other living essentials likewise. from a young age I had to carry gallons of water for miles along with siblings, and as I got older the tasks got even more challenging. So I applied what I learned as a kid into my training; baby steps is always a functional way to start anything. Although I saw changes in my body(tightness, more muscle size), I didn't see any difference in weight. That's because my diet regime didn't make sense at all.. lol.. My breakfast of champions to me was, fried eggs, salami and cheese, with a nice portion of mashed plantains, and a glass of cold milk.. what? I am Dominican, what do you expect? lol
Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I grew up in an unhealthy environment, both emotionally, verbally and physically; while other kids played, I was forced to do errands while everyone in the house made the mess. Not having my mother around, I was brought up like a stepchild, and like a stepchild I was raised. I was always taught and told I would NEVER be anything more then just a lost child. All those memories haunted me as I grew up, I believed it so much, that it caused me to be around people that would treat me the same way; sort of like a masochist. But it all came to an end when I walked away from my family and my unhealthy relationship; I knew I had a purpose in life, and it didn't involve people trying to hurt me.
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: Not really, at this point is more of an acceptance of the fact. I had a couple of big arguments, and not so great turnouts. It has gotten a little better because I try not to be around while I'm prepping lol. As far as friends, I can't recall having "close friends" until I got into the sport. I am blessed to have attracted some great people into my life from competing that I hold dear to my heart, and will do anything for them bc of all the support they have given me throughout my journey ;-).
Q: You won your Pro card at the 2009 Team Universe. What did winning that Pro card mean to you personally?
A: It was the greatest accomplishment in my entire life. I cried backstage, and as I closed my eyes, all my life bad experiences played themselves like lighting; hearing voices of people putting me down, and telling me I wasn't good for anything. I opened my eyes and realized how much I have had achieved just by believing in myself. The greatest feeling was knowing those people were aware of my achievements. It was like giving them a slap on the face without even touching them. I was even happier to know my little sister and aunt were there to share that moment with me along with my support system, my friends.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: Sure:
* 2007 - INBF MHP Best body championships - 4th [lace both novice and Open
* 2008 - New York Metropolitan Figure Championships - 1st in Class and Overall Winner
* 2008 - Eastern USA Championships - 1st in Class and Overall Winner
* 2009 - North American Championships - 1st in Class E
* 2009 - Team Universe - 1st in Class D (Awarded Pro Card)
* 2010 - New York Pro Figure - 16th Place
* 2010 - Jacksonville Pro Figure - 7th Place
Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: I would say my arms. Thanks to the gallons of water I carried as a young kid lol.
Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: I love training shoulders. I try keeping it simple, just focusing on negatives. shoulder presses with a combo of Arnold presses are my favorite
Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: I don't have a normal day, so I can't rely on normal routines. I tried to keep my w.o's simple but challenging by adding different theories of training,(hi rep, low weights, superset, drop set, negatives, and failures.) It all depends how my day at work is. The same applies for contest prep. The only normal routine will be my cardio; no matter how the days is, I must make sure the cardio gets in.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: I must say that at the beginning I would always get a negative reaction from people, but as time goes by, people stop me to compliment me and ask for advice. I love taking the time to talk to people that want to better themselves.
Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: LOL "omg you braulick.. How much you bench press?" lol
Q: What is the one thing you wish people understood?
A: There are many, but one that really frustrates me when people ask why do I have to eat 5 or 6 times a day rather then one big meal to keep you full all day. It just so hard to explain to people how the human body responds when you choose one over the other; I feel like a kindergarten teacher at times.
Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The best part of competing for me is getting to hangout with good people I have met throughout the years, and meeting new ones. The worse part is if you don't be careful with your post comp eating, it can be a very uncomfortable experience of "rebound", which can even cause what we call "post comp depression". I've been there, and I know its not a pretty place to be in.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: While doing my research for my new comp, I got very familiar with oxygen magazine. Monica Brandt, and the late Amanda Savell(may God have her in his paradise) were my ultimate favorites and inspiration.
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: My favorite cheat would be sushi and peanut butter. I know, I am weird. lol
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: One thing I always tell someone that comes to me, and most likely frustrated because they have tried"everything" out there is, "remember God didn't build the world in one day, you have to be consistent, have a balance, and take baby steps with food, and training. Drastic changes tend to follow with drastic matters, so take things one day at at time."
Q: DO you think it s becoming more common to see women in the gym training and lifting as hard as men?
A: Yes, and I am happy to see that. Women are becoming more aware of how lifting can benefit their well being.
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love baking, and getting creative in the kitchen. I enjoy sight seeing around the city.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Kat Ramirez.
A: lol, I laugh at this question every time I get asked.. Ok here we go,
I wake up around 445am, get my coffee going, and get ready for the gym. I leave the house around 530-6am to catch a bus to the train. It takes me an hour and 20 minutes to get to the gym from home(which is a 10 min walk from work). Get my am cardio in, get ready to be at work by 9-930am. My days at work are pretty unexpected, I might get out at 5pm, or at times at 7pm.. Then head back to the gym, get m training going, and rest of cardio, shower, and head back home. At times, it would take me 2 hours to get home bc transit pretty much sucks here in NY lol. Most likely I end up in bed by 12am to do it all over again the next day. I try cooking my proteins every 3 days, measure them, and freeze them. I try to manage my time wisely.
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I wouldn't choose surprised as the right word, more like shocked. lol
People I know now tell me that before they knew me I was intimidating or gave the "stuck up" impression, and how shocked they were to be wrong. I consider myself a well rounded person, and I love analyzing people; from their gestures, body language, to how they speak. I like to be the "quiet" one and just observe to see what kind of vibe I get from people. I also try to have my guard up for the simple fact that my gestures at times can be taken in the wrong way, specially by men.
Q: Describe Kat Ramirez in five words.
A: Hard worker, caring, inspiring, achiever, loyal, honest, lovable, fun... oh wait you said 5.. dammit...lol
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: After Jacksonville pro, I had my eyes set into another comp for the year, but we all know that competing is a very expensive sport. I love competing, and love prepping for shows, but financially this is not the time to go wild for the sake of it. I know when I have reached my limits, so for now, I will focus on other priorities, and build a game plan for 2011.

Q: Kat , again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
A: I thank you for giving me the opportunity to share part of my life with others. Everyone has a story to tell, I just hope mine touches people in a very positive way, thus helping them to never give up when all just seems to be going downhill.

IFBB Pro Emery Miller Interview

Emery Miller is a personal favorite of mine. Why? Could it be the incredible physique, the winning her Pro card after only three years, the inspiring story that lead her to the gym, the inspiring story about what she went through leading up to winning her Pro card, her obvious beauty, or maybe it has been now that I have gotten to know her, she is incredibly sweet and has been very supportive of me? I think it is a little bit of each of those things. Want to know why I love bodybuilding, and am so supportive of the women in it? Look no further than Emery.

Q: First, Emery, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Better yet, let me thank YOU for caring enough about me to want the answers to the following questions. I appreciate your asking and everyone who takes the time to read this.
Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: Ok. I was born October 3, 1964...yes '64, in East Los Angeles. I was born 2 months premature with a heart condition. For most of my life I lived with my teenaged (at time of birth) mother and my grandparents in Downey, CA.
There really isn't anything exciting to say about my childhood. I was incredibly shy. I was in handicapped P.E., from 5th grade to 9th I was picked on & beat up by the cheerleaders in my school to the point that I had to change schools to a different county where I became part of the schools drama department & later did community theatre.
Nothing remarkable really. Just the average shy, dorky kid.
Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: Noooooo! Hahahaha! Handicapped P.E. We did bowling & yoga! The really sad thing is that I was capable of much more all along but I thought that I couldn't and was not pressed to try. To be honest I had no inclination to try. I had an easy ride. I was a skinny, scrawny kid (until puberty) why would I want to be involved in all that getting dirty, sweating & breathlessness? lol
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: I was FAT!!!! Not just a little fat but Significantly Obese at 200 lbs on my 5'2" frame & 38% bodyfat. After puberty my weight doubled in one year & from that day on I battled skinny/fat/skinny/fat. Spent 12 years in the throes of Bulima (Now 7 years recovered. Would be 19 but for one set-back in 2003), and finally ended up obese during my 2nd marriage. Funny, I thought being a good wife meant feeding ones husband gourmet foods all made from scratch (Granny was a pro pastry baker) & all I did was nearly kill both myself & my ex-husband. Sad but ended up being the best thing that happened to both of us.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: We actually started together and did pick it up fairly easily. Being open minded to change helps. So many women are in the position I was in that they had tried everything only to repeatedly fail but won't try the one thing that really works. In my case I was to the point where I was more afraid of living with my self-loathing than my fear of having people be disgusted by my being muscle-bound. I saw results fairly quickly because I was HUGE! lol We started with "Body For Life" for the diet & read all the muscle magazines for training, at least until we met IFBB Pro Dave Fisher.
Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I really liked the way I looked and I already knew I had the proper genetic shape.Heaven knows I wasn't built for the shape I'd tortured myself my whole life for not being. (Audrey Hepburn) I surely must be shaped right for something.
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: Yes & no. My ex-husband, Patrick was incredibly supportive. The rest of the family thought it was a "cute" hobby I had going on.
Interesting story: In May, 2004 I became infected with MRSA in my right breast & was placed in quarantine to stop the infection from spreading and/or killing me. They removed my breast within hours of my arrival & the rest was a waiting game with constant visits from my doctor, the epidemiologist & the CDC while I fought it off. All I could think of was, A) I cant be dying. Its a BOOB! and B) I need to get out of here & train because Im competing for my pro card in November.
Patrick encouraged & reassured me that I would make it out in time to train. EVERYONE else, friends & family alike said things such as, "That's all nice. You've had a good run but don't ou think it's time to gt back to reality and focus on home & hearth?" "Maybe its time to quit."
I'm fighting for my life, I have one thing keeping me determined and my family invalidates that one thing and tells me to QUIT!????
I'm telling that story in comraderie & solidarity to all the other ladies with little support or understanding for the work we do & how much iot means to us.
In November of that year I went on stage in Dallas & won my pro card as a Middleweight with one tit (later reconstructed) and the only unanimous score of the women on stage that day. Boooyah baby!
Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: Well the posing routines did, & always will scare the crap out of me but the rest not really. What did surprise me was the incredible community of persons involved in this sport. Since I have been in this sport I have met more people that I swear would drop everything for me & fly to my rescue without even knowing me well. And I would do the same for them. We look mean & scary but (unless you are asking a dumb question when we are carb depleted) you will never meet a nicer group of people nor any more supportive.
Q: You won your Pro card at 2004 National Bodybuilding Championships. What did winning your IFBB Pro card mean to you personally?
A: Honey, Bodybuilding gave me my self-esteem and saved my life. There are no words that can express the gratitude & joy I had in my heart on that day for being accepted into a group of the world's most phenominal women.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A:

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: Can't choose. I'm a symmetry girl. Per Steve Wennerstrom, I've got "a little bit of everything." I just need more of everything as well. lol
Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: Legs & Abs. Legs because I injured my knees the first year I was lifting & couldn't do legs for a year. I feel they are always 1 year behind. I WILL catch up. Abs because I do them to music and I love music.
Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A:
Mon. Delts & Calves
Tues. Hams & Abs
Wed. Back & Bi's
Thurs. Quads & Abs
Fri. Chest & Tri's
Off season cardio: 30-45 mins x 5 days ( gain fat easily because of previous weight)
Contest cardio: 1 hour to 3 hours x 7 days. LIIT Has to be low intensity due to low calories.
Off season diet: 1700-2000 calories
Contest diet: Whatever Palumbo tells me to do. lol Its been working so far.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: 98% positive. Once they've heard my story 100% positive. The negative ones aren't interested in taking the time to find out my story or anyone elses. They are only being mean because its all they've had in their life and its all they know. Oddly enough the majority of negative comments I get are from "hippy" types whom I thought professed NOT judging someone by the way they look and also obese women which is funny since I'm one of them. The truly interesting part is that when they do call me names its the same names & statements they used to hurt me when I was fat, therby proving two things...1) Women don't come in all shapes & all are beautiful 2) They really aren't attacking the way I look but my sense of confidence & their lack thereof.
Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: Oh God!!! "DO YOU WORKOUT?" and "Don't piss her off! Teehee teehee!" That and people assuming that my workout partner is my trainer simply because he's a man. He is doing a set too & no one thinks I'm his trainer although of the two of us I am a trainer at that gym. DO they really think I can't decide which weight to pick up by myself????
Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: We have not "quit" simply because we went off season. This is the HEALTHY PART. We are not getting "bigger" when we are shredding, quite the contrary. Most of the persons who come up to tell me how fat I've gotten off season have FAR more bodyfat than my whopping off season 19% but they still feel the need to share their disappointment at my clearly immense weight gain. LOL We aim to educate...yes we do! :.D
Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: Best: ALL OF IT! But especially those few quiet seconds after I've shut the alarm off & I run my hands down my sides only to discover that each day I feel like a whole different person. Those moments when I am still supine and have to learn the curves of this new person under my skin. I wish I could share it but if you've never leaned out to that level, you'll never know. The worst comes moments after that when I have to sit up & feel the gravity impact my sore & tired back and my weight on my feet still throbbing the the previous days training & cardio and I remember that the glorious moment I just enjoyed comes with a defininte price. Other than that, not having enough time in the day.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Lenda Murray, Betty Viana-Adkins, Cory Everson, Lisa Aukland
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Full breakfast with PANCAKES (Boysenberry & butter pecan syrup)
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Have fun. Don't rush it. Its not an instant gratification sport (The turtle wins the race) & don't be afraid to read the "boy" magazines.
Q: Do you think muscular women are becoming more accepted by society?
A: We're #1 baby!
http://www.asylum.com/2010/02/22/women-we-secretly-lust-over-ann-coulter-goths-geeks/
I adore that article. If more men would quit being chicken to admit they like us, and they clearly do, people would see that we've really been popular for a long time. Then more women would quit being worried that no man would be attracted to them muscular & we'd have more women in the sport.
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activites you enjoy?
A: Other than the fact that my whole life is Bodybuilding...I dont really have time for other activities right now. I have 2 jobs that I work in 2 shifts each, 7 days per week & Im trying to move to the east coast this Spring. Busy, busy, busy. I do love to read, movies (no chick flicks!) museums, anything outdoors, boxing matches, and the nude beach. (Sorry, gotta be honest)
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Emery Miller.
A: Sure you want to go there????
5:00 am get up & either work cam or cardio
8:30-1200 go to gym to work clients
12:00 pm lunch, training, cardio, tanning ish....
3:00-6:00 pm train clients
7:30 pm dinner
8:00-10:30 work cam
11:00 pm protein shake & a lil tv
11:30 pm bed
That's the whole of it.
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: Ummmmmm? Gosh Im so open about everything I doubt there are many surprises waiting here. Oh yeah, I CAN be quiet for more than 5 minutes. LOL Ohhhh, and I don't want to receive anymore pictures of penis' by email. I'm truly only attracted to intellect. Send me a picture of genitalia would be the antithesis of that. :.D
Q: Describe Emery Miller in five words.
A: Difficult! Ohhhh not me! The question! LOL Ummmmm 1) Stubborn 2) Contemplative 3) Romantic 4) Silly 5) DORK!!!
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: Move to the east coast so I can be closer to the pro shows, the community. Make some friends & start school for Physical Therapist. Make myself better so I can place higher at next years Tampa Pro.
Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Just all the hardworking ladies of our sport. Please remember guys, very few (1-2%) of us have any sponsors or endorsements. Contests & training are expensive. We need you. I'm not talking about monetary support although NOT asking for freebies would help, but to take the time to write to the magazines & tell them you want to see more of us. Be as tenacious and undaunting as we have to be when we train. Make them understand. DO NOT QUIT! We haven't.
My website will be back up & running soon just as soon as the updates are complete. Thank you
Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Emery Miller the athlete and competitor?
A: YES! They are getting the most tenacious lil ankle biter of a competitor ever! I DON'T QUIT EVER! I work for what I have, I always have & I always will. If someone wants to help me they will NOT be sorry. Pro card in just 3 years of competing & with a heart condition...HELLO!!! LOL Seriously, Im a team player. I do need help and I would be grateful for any assistance I can get.

Brandy Higgins Interview

Brandy Higgins is someone I have become really impressed with. In a short time she went from someone I wasn't really familiar with to a personal favorite. She has a great physique (highlighted by incredible abs and great legs), has a very outgoing personality, and as the pictures show, is a very beautiful woman. Her goal is her Pro card, and with her attitude, determination, desire, and physique, I surely would not doubt her ability to get it. Brandy Higgins is destined for big things in this industry.

Q: First, Brandy, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: Well I was born and raised in Lexington, TN. I’m a big Tom Boy and Love to get dirty with the boys. LOL… I grew up with lots of animals mostly horses. Where I showed and competed in all types of events. After I graduated from High School I went to UT Martin for a year then joined the United States Army on Active Duty. I was a 92-A which is automated logistics and also the .50 cal gunner for my unit! While on Active Duty I got married and had my son (Tyler). After I got out in 2002 I moved to Southern Utah and attend college where I graduated with my A.S. in Science. After that I moved to Northern Utah to attend USU where I was working on my B.S. in Exercise Science. Now I’m a single mom who works for the DoD on Hill AFB. I work part time as a personal trainer and compete in figure with the NPC.
Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: I did play in gymnastics when I was in grade school cause I cheered. But sports really wasn’t my thing, if I did play any of them I was a naturally. I played one summer of softball but it got in the way of my fishing, so I stopped after that. My thing was training horses.
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: After seeing pictures of me and my son on a horse, I was really over weight and started to have health problems.
Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: It came natural to me. At the time I was married and my ex husband showed me a few things. I wanted to know more so I began taking exercise science classes and ready up on exercise and nutrition. Once I began understanding how to balance things out my body changed so fast. I had people at the gym asking me to train them. That’s why I became a personal trainer, I love helping others.

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I remember seeing pictures in magazine of Monica Brant and Jenny Lynn. I remember thinking; wow, a strong, fit, and sexy look. And after being in the Army for a few years, I was always looking for a great challenge. I love pushing myself to the limits.
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: Not really. It was hard for them to understand. The big Myth; if you life weights as a woman you will look like a man. I just finished USA’s and only was about 112 lbs and still my family thinks I was too big. It’s hard to explain sometimes the diets, training, and hours at gym training and doing cardio. My biggest supporter now is my boyfriend who also competes. We both just did USA’s together. Makes getting ready for a show so much better.
Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: You’re never really prepared for the first show. Lol… It was a great learning experience. There is so much that goes into getting ready. I didn’t pack enough food and carb depleting and loading if that’s something you do. Water intake and sodium. It took a few shows for me to start learning my body and what works for me. I’m still learning every day.
Q: Can you share your contest history.
A:
*2010 NPC USA’s Class B 16th
*2010 NPC TopForm Classic Class A 1st
*2010 NPC TopForm Classic Novice 3rd
*2009 NPC Las Vegas Classic Class A 5th
*2007 ABA Figure Open 4th
*2007 ABA Bikini Diva 1st
*2007 ABA Sports Model 1st

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: That’s a hard one. Most people love my legs, however I like my abs the best. They have a mind of their own. When people ask me what I do for them, they are surprised I only train them a month out from a show most of the time and only 2 x a week. One day weighted and the other endurance.
Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: Shoulders and Back. I’m trying to get a better shoulder cap so I really like training shoulders because I’m seeing the results. My back is almost 3-D looking sometimes on stage so I enjoy working it just to see what it will look like each time. I love to do plyo with super sets on most exercise. I just get a more athletic look when I use plyo training.
Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: My Boyfriend (Brandon Burrows) has been helping me get ready for my last show and my next show. I play with my diet depending on where I’m at and how I’m feeling. I do much better on a lower carb diet with high protein and medium fats. I feel like I’m very carb sensitive. As far as training I train just like a bodybuilder but I add plyo into my training. For example I will do Lateral Raises with jump squats between sets. I lift heavy for the most part because I need a bit more size, but I do more endurance for my Biceps and Triceps cause I build muscle there really easy. I do about 4-5 sets total depending and my cardio is more HIIT style. I have really bad knees from running in the army so I can’t do hours on end of cardio. About 4 weeks out I add more cardio into my prep. I feel like if I do too much too soon then I just eat way at my muscles. But for me and most it’s a weekly look and see where I’m at then make a decision on what to do.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: Most are impressed. When people see my before picture or find out that I have a child they can’t believe it. For the most part its more Positive.
Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: "How much can you bench?" That’s mostly from the men. Don’t understand why some people think that chest is so important. I’m like REALLY! What about LEGS! They are the biggest muscle part in the body! You should want a balance physique.
Women are more I just can’t find the time or I have kids! And? It doesn’t take much to live a healthy life style. Make the time! Taking the kids and dog for a walk. Get up 30mins early and do a something around the house of exercise.
Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: Just because you lift heavy you will look like a man. I don’t know who started that but It just drives me nuts. Lol.. You can lift heavy all day long man or woman but if your diet is not on track you can’t grow. Most people don’t eat the right foods or amounts to grow anyway. If you’re a woman looking to shape your body you need to lift weights.
Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The Best Part for me is seeing each time the changes I make each time I step on stage. I love the sport! It’s me against myself and no one else! That’s what makes it so fun!
The worst part? How could there be anything bad out of doing what you love. There is no worst part for me.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Monica Brant, Nicole Wilkins-Lee and Erin Stern for figure.
However my boyfriend is the most positive influence in my life right now. His mental way of thinking and visualization has helped me become a better person and competitor. The same as Kai Greene which is one of my favorite Pro Bodybuilders.
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Anything not on my diet. LOl.. I like something sweet. Ice cream
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Don’t be afraid to lift heavy! Weights are very important if you want to change your shape not cardio only.
Q: Do you think it is becoming more accepted by society to see women training as hard as men in the gym?
A: Yes and No. I was at a show and over heard a Photographer tell the staff not to worry about talking and taking pictures of female bodybuilders! Why? They put just as much time and effort in the gym as figure, fitness, bikini and bodybuilders do. But the magazines only want to see a fit physique. I think society is starting to understand that everyone needs to exercise but they have a fine line on what is acceptable.
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I enjoy spending time with my son, boyfriend and his two kids. My two dogs who one I just got a new Blue Nose Pit Bull name keno. I love to camp, hike, fish, and just being outside. Utah is a great place if you like the outdoors.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Brandy Higgins.
A: Well I’m 8 weeks from the NPC Utah Nutrimart Classic so
Up at 4am cardio then eat and out the door by 6pm heading to work. I get off work at 4:45pm run home help my son with home work and cook dinner for him then off to the gym for training and more cardio. I’m home in bed by 10 to 10:30pm.
I’m off on Friday, Sat, and Sundays so things change a little. Not much. I get to sleep in a little and help clients on these days. Sunday is my Son’s day to do whatever he wants so we can go to a movie or a fun park, etc…
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I was a .50 Cal Gunner for my unit in the ARMY! Well even I was in the Army surprises most people. I loved the Army! Best decision I ever made was to join. It taught me so many things and made me who I am today!
Q: Describe Brandy Higgins in five words.
A: Goofy, Fun, Lovable, Down to earth
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: I’m going for my Pro Card! That’s my overall Goal. My next show is in 8 weeks (NOTE: at the time of interview) and I plan to do a few more shows between now and USA’s in 2011.
Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Just want to thank my Boyfriend (Brandon Burrows) for all his help and support. I have had some up and downs with training and diet and his been right there to push me and keep me motivated through it all.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Brandy Higgins the athlete and competitor?
A: I am looking for Sponsors! I can be reached at me email: breonnai@aol.com

Part 2: General Questions
1. Why Bikini?
AD: Well, actually next year I will be going back to Figure. I thought Bikini would be my thing, but it's just not.
HK: Love that it allows me to be my personality on stage free-style.
JT: Training for Bikini is less stressful on the body and more suitable for my physique.
RS: I choose to compete in Bikini because it suits the look I prefer for my everyday life.
ST: It's more feminine. I love how the looks is a little more soft and sexy, but still muscular.
SM: The Bikini look is what my body most closely resembles right now. I don't have the muscle mass for Figure (despite training hard with heavy weights) and I've had success in this division, so I'm going to continue to work hard, ride the wave and see where it leads me.
VP: It rocks and it is soemthing I ahve to push myself at. I am actually a very quiet person, but I lvoe being able to "Turn-it-on" in front of a crowd :-)
2. On a scale from 1-10, if ten years ago women training as hard as men being accepted by society was a 0, what is it today?
AD: A 5 maybe> People still look at you like you are crazy, for the most part.
HK: I think that women are accepted more as athletes much easier today, but most people are still gnorant to what it is we do. So I will say an 8
JT: 7
LO: 6
RS: I'm not sure I can answer this fairly. Inside the industry and in competitor's mind, it's a 10, outside, I have no idea.
ST: A 7! I feel it is very accepted by society and also encouraged at this point!
SM: I suppose it depends whose interpretation of "training hard" you go by, but I'll give this a .....7. Moe accepted than it was, but still a work in progress and not quite "there" (though I'm not sure if it ever will be)
VP: I would say 7
3. What is the biggest misconception about Bikini competitors?
AD: That they don't have to train very hard.
HK: Thatw e get to eat whatever we want and just do cardio, weights are definitley a huge part of what we do!
JT: The biggest misconcpetions about Bikini competitors is that they don't train or diet hard.
LO: That they don't work hard. Some of them don't, but there are a few oof use that do.
RS: That we do not have to diet. Anyone who wants to drop body fat will have to diet. End of story.
ST: That they don't have to diet or train as hard....I disagree :-)
SM: I believe the biggest misconcpetion is that we don't diet and train hard. Of course anyone who knows us, knows that is far from the truth.
VP: That we just walk in off the bech or too sultry, but that is starting to cahnge.
4. How can we make it so the prize money is more even between men and women?
AD: I'm not sure on that one. Going to leave that one up to you Jason!!!
HK: Keep on bringing more attention to the female side of the sport.
JT: Honestly I don't even know the compensation for either sex.
LO: Good question. Prize money isn't very prevalent as is.
ST: I thinkg women are becoming more and more accepted as far as competing in men's sports. By encouraging more women to step on stage, play sports, etc. I think it is slowly becoming more equal...but with time, eventually it will become more so!
VP: Well prize money is ultimately determiend by the fans. The more magazines they by and shows they watch the more money will go to the women. It's all about economics and the demand in the market.
5. My greatest achievement in the sport so far is?
AD: Competing at Jr. Nationals. I always wanted to walk onto a National stage.
HK: Prividing a positive example to my teenagers about nutrition and working out!
JT: Winning the Overall at the Bluegrass Muscle Classic.
LO: 2nd place at my first show, but more-so learning more about myself and what I'm capable of.
RS: 4th place at Jr. Nationals, 2010
ST: Taking first place and Overall in my first Bikini competition, then being able to compete on a National level within my first year :-)
SM: Placing top 3 at my first two National shows.
VP: Achieving Pro status at the Jr. USA's
6. Train alone or with a partner, and why?
AD: Partner! I hate to train alone and I can't lift as heavy if I don't have someone to spot me!
HK: Usually alone, which I hate- but my schedule is so hectic, it's never the same time. WHen I do have the opportunity I would prefer company to keep me on my game!
JT: Alone. Gym time is my "me time". I let out my life frustrations :-)
LO: Alone for sure, unless it's a spotter. I like to zone into my workouts and give myself a beat down!
RS: Alone most of the time, with my husband occasionally. I like to train alone because I don't like when people try to hold conversations with me during training, and I don't like waiting too long between sets.
ST: Alone. I like to go in and focus on my weaknesses. Training with someone else takes longer and I don't focus as much.
SM: I don't mind either, but I enjoy training alone. It's my time to forget about my worries and focus on myself. With a loaded Mp3 player, lifting glvoes and my jug of water or ALRI's Chained Out. I'm always motivated and ready to hit it hard.
VP: Always alone; however, my husband will spot me from time to time.
7. What is the most ridiculous question or comment you have heard from someone the first time they saw your physique?
AD: "How much do you bench?" Ha! Really?
HK: That they think bodybuilders should be bigger....so why am I so skinny? Which leads me to attempt to explain what it is that the NPC Bikini division is all about.
JT: That my body in my Kentucky Muscle picutre looked like a Greek Goddess. Obviously that was a pick up line :-)
LO: :You're not going to get huge right?" It takes a lot of work and many times, extra help to become "huge". Women don't build muscle like me do and many people still don't understand that.
RS: I will never forget it: "You look like a man." I thought this was particularly ridculous becasue a) I am not overly muscular, I have somehwat narrow shoulders and a big butt, all of which are not masculine. b) I have a feminine face/jaw. c) I have super long, dark hair. What is manly about that??
ST: "You look too skinny."
SM: I had a colleague tell me that she wanted to stab me. That was a new one!
VP: "Wow, do you work out!"
8. My favorite part to train is__ but my least favorite is__?
AD: Favorite: LEGS!!! Least favorite: LEGS!!!!

HK: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Quads (always bothers my back)
JT: Favorite: Arms, Least favorite: Legs
LO: Favorite Legs, Least favorite: I appreciate every aspect of training. Abs can be a chore, but they are worked pretty efficiently throguh squats and other foundational movements. I still do them about once a week.
RS: Favorite: Legs, Least favorite: Back
ST: Favorite: Shoulders, Least favorite: Legs
S<: Favorite: Legs/Glutes, Least favorite: Shoulders
