Brandi Akers Interview

She is beautiful. She has an amazing physique, highlighted by some of the best glutes in the sport. But Brandi Akers is also an intelligent, strong (not jsut physically), independent, confident, and determined woman. From a tough up-bringing and being on her own at 15, Brandi has persevered, and become a success. She started competing in Figure, but moved on to bodybuilding, which was obviously a good choice based on her finishing first at lightweight at the 2009 Excalibur. No doubt bigger things are coming to, both in bodybuilding, and her soon to launch website www.brandimae.com. Here is a chance to know a little more about an extraordinary woman and athlete, Brandi Akers.

Q: First, Brandi, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Not a problem at all, thank you for the consideration.

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: A little about me; I am originally from Dallas, Texas currently residing in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am 28 years old, sort of a nerd as I love to read, love education and love to push myself analytically. I am highly ambitious, motivated and very tough (both inside and out)..I have been known to be sort of be cold hearted (or so I have been told). I am not shy by any means and absolutely love attention.

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: I have always been athletic; as a child I played ever sport from softball to running track. Even as an adult I have trained in Muay Thai, boxing and obviously weight training. I still intend on taking up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after this coming season.

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: As I mentioned, I have always been athletic so going to a gym was nothing new to me, even as a young adult.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: I have always had a muscular physique and it has always shown. Results have always come easy for me as I have always trained like a consistent machine.

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: Initially, I compete in figure shows for the simple fun of it because being fit and training was something I enjoyed so when a trainer of mine first suggested I compete, I was all for it and honestly don't regret it at all.

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: I have a small family but my grandmother has always supported me in everything. I have had past relationships where the guy wasn't supportive or didn't understand the concept of the sport..needless to say those relationships didn't last. I don't need a buffed out bronco but I do need to be supported and not talked down to because I have goals outside of the house.

Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: Competing was what I expected in the beginning but what surprised me the most was how the girls went from being muscular in figure to slowly transitioning to a smaller and smaller physique; I have always been muscular and when I first started competing all the girls where muscular..I wasn't able to conform..I tried and didn't like it, hence why I decided to do bodybuilding.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A:
*2009 - 1st LW FBB Excalibur
*2007 - 2nd Figure Lonestar
*2006 - 4th Figure Europa
*2005 - 8th Figure Ronnie Coleman Classic
*2004 - 10th Figure Ronnie Coleman Classic

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: I feel I have a few great body parts; I think my bicep peak is great and my butt definitely is an asset.

Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: I honestly love to train my glutes; I love squatting, leg pressing and lunges.

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: Normally, I am consistent with cardio but when I am not training for a show I do love to do other athletics such as Mixed Martial Arts, dance and Yoga. I eat clean most of the time due to having a sensitive stomach. I can't have much sugar, dairy or heavy foods so this does help with off-season eating. I alter my diet by adding more calories and my protein intake; certainly I alter my training by implementing a consistent weight training regime.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: I always get positive feedback but a few times I have been asked if I was a transexual (man dressing as a women) but nothing really offends me.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: Honestly, nothing people say or ask bothers me to bad; I do get sick of people asking "So, you must work out, huh?" but then I figure perhaps they just want to chat with me and don't have much else to open with, so I smile and say yes...sometimes I flex a bicep or so!

Q: What is the biggest misconception about female bodybuilders or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: I think there are major stereotypes regarding female bodybuilders (i.e. we all have huge clits, we all look like men, we are all so masculine, we are all crazy, we must all be insecure, etc.) I think some of us do love attention but some of us simply love to train and love the look and feeling of being muscular, hard and having balance of femininity and masculinity and that is OK. I think it is ironic that society is open to obesity (as that is normal) but yet stare at us as though we are from another planet because we are in shape and healthy....it honestly astounds and perplexes me that we are the weird ones because we are thick with muscle and not blubber!

Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The best part for me is seeing my body change time and time again; I love the look of being thick and hard. I love being on stage and I love the admiration from people. The worst would be the consistency you have to have when training and doing cardio...it is one thing to want to do it but when you know you have to...it can get monotonous at times.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: This is going to sound bad but honestly no I don't. I mean I think all female bodybuilders look good but I am my favorite competitor and I admire myself the most; in my mind I am a freaking rock and super star! I came from a very harsh and hard up bringing and I have endured more in my 28 years than some do in multiple life times so just being able to do what I do today and having the perceptions on life that I do...I have no choice but to admire myself the most...I have been on my own since the young age of 15, I dropped out of school and now I am competing, starting a small business, have started a non-profit organization and within a year will have my Bachelor's degree in business.

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: My favorite would have to be Pizza; something sweet would be cookies.

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: To go for it but to mostly be patient with herself because changes don't happen overnight; to stay consistent and to permanently change bad eating habits.

Q: You have a website coming soon. Can you give the address and tell people what they will be able to find there?
A: Sure, www.brandimae.com
The site is going to incorporate me (obviously) but also my brand of what an erotic, muscle, fantasy really is. Many people have fantasies regarding hard, fit, athletic and or muscular women..I want people to really understand that a women can be very muscular, exotic, erotic and sexy as hell.

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: Again, I love reading, I love laughing and anything that will make me laugh; I love exploring anything that is unorthodoxed to society, I love dancing, I obviously love being around and spending time with the ones that I love, I LOVE MAKING MONEY, and I love helping others (philanthropy)..especially others (young children or women) who are struggling with poverty or obesity, I also love to sleep!

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Brandi Akers?
A: Mornings usually consist of cardio, school and work; my evening consist of weight training, training any clients, and more work.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: That I play an instrument (Saxophone); it has been a few years and not sure if my lunges are up to par as they once where. I love drag queens!

Q: Describe Brandi Akers in five words.
A: Intelligent, Caring, Stubborn, Exotic, and Sexy

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: The launch of my site www.brandimae.com
Competing at the 2010 USA in Las Vegas

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: www.brandimae.com - should be launching in June 2010

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Brandi Akers the athlete and competitor?
A: I don't go on the hunt looking for sponsors as it seems many are looking to sponsor figure or bikini girls because they feel female bodybuilders aren't as marketable which is sort of a crock of crap when I get women all the time who tell me they would love to have my physique, arms, butt, etc., but as an athlete and a person I am great at sales, very sociable, have a brain between my ears, great with marketing, innovative and creative, outspoken, sociable, very down to earth and humble (no diva attitude where I think I am the best thing since sliced bread..that mentality makes me sick). Any one can contact me at my personal email: brandi@brandimae.com

Q: Brandi, again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
A: Again, thank you for the consideration and opportunity to complete the interview, I appreciate it.

Competitors Edge by Vanessa Prebyl

A Weekly Blog By Nationally Ranked Bikini Competitor Vanessa Prebyl

Hello to all!!! This week I am going to be talking about Competition Color or also known as your stage tan. As many of you know, your stage tan adds dramatically to your presentation and it is one of the criteria you will be judged on.

As I am preparing for a show, I usually tan in a tanning bed once every two weeks. I know all of the health risks, however, I have very fair skin. I feel that my base tan allows my stage color to look more natural and healthy.

I personally use Jan Tana for my stage color. I have it done by them professionally and they do an AMAZING job. I suggest you use Jan Tana's pre-scrub for 2 weeks prior (scrubbing with a exfoliating gloves). Remember to have someone scrub your back to make sure every part of your back is exfoliated. Once I start my pre-scrub I don't put on any other lotions or perfumes that I feel would not mix well with the Jan Tana products. Once I have my stage tan sprayed on at the show, I stay away from all water because the tan washes off with water. I also try to stay cool and not sweat because, even though you do the prep scrub, your sweat can turn your tan a little greenish. However, DO NOT put on deodorant because then you will turn bright green (Not good).

I know a few girls that have used Pro Tan. Some girls really liked it and some girls didn't. I have never used them before; however, they did mention that some people are stained by the product because it is medical grade color. Once again, I have never used Pro Tan; this is just what I have heard.

As for Self-applied products from Jan Tana or Pro Tan, please be careful. Practice applying tanning products at least a month before your show, so that if is doesn't work for you or if you do not feel comfortable with your self application, you have time to schedule a professional color. Yes, I have seen people turn green (it was not a pretty sight and no one could help. It just got worse and worse the more people tried). With that being said, if you do use self-application tanning products, make sure you follow the directions exactly. If done right, this is a great way to get good color and save some money. Just make sure you know what you are doing and have someone to apply the tanning product to your back and hard to reach places.

WARNING- Stay with the tanning product you choose for that show. You do not want to mix tanning products. For example, if you use Pro Tan for your color, do not use Jan Tana's glaze. The products are not made to work with each other and they will NOT, especailly under the hot lights on stage.

I hope this information helps you. if you ahve any additional questions pelase psot a cooment to this blog or feel free to email me at vanessaprebyl2000@yahoomail.com.

Sheila Benditz Contest Prep Journal

Week of May 7th

Didn't think that I would do another day by day blow for this past week. I though I would let you know what I am realyl feeling and thinking.

Sorry I am running behind schedule, I've gotten myself into a grueling schedule! I think it will be better now as I am giving myself Friday off, from working, to allow me some "me" time. Ive been pushing myself and with my training and diet, I ahve been quite worn out. Went to ym nutritionist this apst week and am looking forward to my new diet plan. We feel that I am not getting quite enough food, which is very exciting (so I get to eat mroe). I know that I am ahead of my schedule, down to 7.8% body fat right now, out 7 1/2 weeks to the Branch Warren and 9 1/2 weeks to the Master Nationals, So I am hoping to get my legs and biceps to get some lost size back! I've got my trainer Tina working on me for that, so I am confidnet, that I will get to where I need to be. I was just thinking this week, I competed 2 seasons ago, on a whim, and was pleasently surprised by the results. I told myself I was going to take a year off and compete again this year. Unfortunately I broke my wrist last year and had surgery to repair. Although this killed any off season training, I am hoping to reach my goals and comepte at a high level. But with that being said, I am now looking ahead with renewed vigor to comepte strongly this year, all the while looking forward to a wonderful off season to see what I can accomplish given some time to really work on my physique. I am confident that I will get through my workotus, my diet, and practicing my posing, what I wodner though, if this will be enough to allow me to win. I knwo that this week's writing may not be all that what is expected, but I wanted to chagne it up a bit, give a little more insight as to how I feel, where I am, and where I want to go. I hope that it kept you intrugued enough to keep your attention!!! Have a great day, Be Strong :-)

XOXO

Sheila

Jacqueline Curl Interview

I could sit here and tell you Jacqueline Curl's story, but I could never give it justice. So I won't get in depth, as she explains it all in this interview. But Jacqueline has overcome a lot in her life, including a medical problem, and not only overcame them, but has worked hard to build an amazing physique. You can not read Jacqueline's story, and not be amazed, inspired, and motivated. And I think she is happy about that. She seems to be the kind of person who takes pride in being able to inspire. Jacqueline talks in this interview of being able to achieve all her dreams. But I truly believe Jacqueline was put here to help others achieve their dreams through inspiration. Just take a look at her before and after photos below this. I very rarely have been as happy and honored to present an interview as I am to present this interview with the beautiful Jacqueline Curl.

Q: First, Jacqueline, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: No problem it is my pleasure :D

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself. Family, where you
are from, things like that.
A: I was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. I'm an only child but have 2 step
brothers. My dad lives in Florida and my mom lives here in Montreal. My
background is Irish, Dutch, African American and West Indian. I'm a personal
trainer for Total Home Training

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or
anything?
A: I was never really into sports as a kid, I was always interested in working
out but never had the motivation or knowledge, I would start and then give
up.

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: About 2 years ago, I had a lot going on. My mom was very sick at the time
and I had to have her admitted to the hospital, it was a very hard time, I
was the only one there and had no one helping me out. This happened twice and
at the same time I had just met my father for the first time in my life, I
was going to school full time, working full time and partying full time.
Hardly sleeping and not dealing or talking to anyone about what was going
on!

It started with not being able to focus when someone was having a
conversation, I couldn't keep track on what they were saying, then my foot
went numb and it spread to half my body. I would have crying break downs at
work and finally went to see the doctor and they told me I was having a burn
out and gave me time off work. But then it just got worse. I couldn't write,
or sign my name it was just scribble, I couldn't tie my shoes, type on the
computer, talk properly, think straight, I walked funny, I would faint, have
panic attacks, black out, have seizures on a daily basis! I would have
episodes where I'd black out and do crazy things that I wouldn't remember. It
was totally insane! They did every test you could think of, I've had the
works.. MRI, EGG, cat scan, spinal tab over 100 blood tests..etc they did
all that because I was showing all the signs of a neurological disorder.
everything came up negative!!!

What I had was called conversion disorder, Conversion disorder is a
condition where a patient displays neurological symptoms such as numbness,
paralysis, or fits, even though no neurological explanation is found and it
is determined that the symptoms are due to the patients psychological
response to stress. Conversion is a psychiatric diagnosis.

Conversion disorder symptoms may occur because of emotional distress or
psychological problems.

Symptoms usually begin suddenly after a stressful experience.

So therapy is what helped in the beginning. and like I said I was on all
kinds of meds and because of them I gained so much weight. I must have
gained 50 pounds! I also used to smoke a lot to get the edge off. I slowly
started to get better, and then I started to work out to get rid of my
stress and clear my head and that's when I got addicted to it and started
training so much and quit smoking and started feeling soooo much better,
better then I ever had. I started walking in my area, every morning. I would
power walk to my favorite tunes on my IPod and just walk. It was so nice to
be outside with the fresh air. I finally felt alive again. This is when I
decided to take it to the next step and joining the gym and I never looked
back!

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you
started to see results?
A: I did pick it up fairly easy, it just came natural to me and I started
seeing results right away and it was so amazing when my clothes started
feeling different, and it just kept me going that much harder. Every week
when the number on the scale would go down my confidence went up!

Q: You just recently did the UFE show, your first, what made you decide to
compete?
A: It was something i was always interested in, I used to watch Fitness America
when I was growing up, but I never thought it was something I could do, I
thought you needed to be training for this since a young age like an Olympic
athlete so I kinda put it at the back of my mind. One day while at work this
really fit and beautiful girl came in. She was a week away from competing in
a fitness competition and she told me all about it. After that I was hooked.
I did my research and kept in touch with her and she encouraged me and stuck
by me through the whole journey. Her name is Kathy Morris, she is a
beautiful person and I thank her everyday for getting me to decide to
compete and for where I am now. I'm also happy to say she is like my sister
now! She's been there for me every step of the way! Love you Kathy!

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: When I first told my family and friends they didn't think I would actually
fall through with it. My dad didn't like the idea at all, he thought I was
gonna turn into this muscle machine steroid kinda competitor lol also I've
done a lot of things in my life and never fell through with them so I don't
blame them for doubting me. Now however my dad is really proud of me and all
I have accomplished and is amazed by my transformation! He tells me I'm his
inspiration. So that's nice to hear! There are some people that just don't
understand and never will, but that's OK! I have met so many amazing people
through this process!

Q: Was competing what you expected?
A: It was more then I expected. I expected to have extreme stage fright, but
the second I stepped on the stage I was at home! The lights, the audience,
the noise it was an amazing feeling and all the months of hard training were
worth that 1 min I got to shine on the stage! I'm so happy I did 2 categories
because I got to go on the stage 3 times! It was amazing!

Q: What did getting on stage teach you about yourself?
A: It taught me I have much more confidence then I thought I did. I also
realized I know how to walk! My legs are my weapon on that stage :D

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: Like I said before MY LEGS! I also love my shoulders and I love when my arms
look cut when i wear a tank top! I would also say my lips :D

Q: Do you have a part you most like to train?
A: I love training my biceps, triceps and shoulders

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how did you
alter it for contest prep?
A: From the min I stepped into the gym and started training I was in
competition mode, same with my diet. It has always been based on training
for a competition. I train 3 days on.

Day 1: legs and abs
Day2: chest and back
Day3: biceps, triceps, shoulders and abs
Day 4: rest

I also run huge flights of stairs x10 4 times a week to build up my legs.

My diet right now is high carbs because I'm trying to build some mass, but
usually its

Meal 1: oatmeal, egg whites, berries
Meal 2: 3 oz of chicken 1 cup of green veggies, 5 oz of sweet potato OR a
tuna salad
Meal 3: 3 oz of chicken 1 cup of green veggies, 5 oz of sweet potato
Meal 4: 4 oz of tilapia , 1 cup of veggies
Meal 5: 5 oz of steak and 5 oz of yams
Meal 6: tuna salad

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time,
what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: More positive for sure, it always so weird to hear I'm an inspiration or that
women want to look like me, I mean a year ago no one would take second look
at me and now its like I'm on display wherever I go! I do get some negative,
there are some haters but that just makes me work that much harder.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment
you are most sick of hearing?
A: Oh my god this is easy, "Do you eat?" lol, do I eat??? I eat more then the
average family! That is the biggest misconception of fitness models, is that
we starve. My whole day consists of eating! So YES I eat! And I hate being
called skinny or too skinny or being told to gain weight.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or
the one thing you wish people understood?
A: Number one like I said before, the diet. Theres a difference between a diet
to be healthy and a diet to compete. When you are on a diet to compete you
cant have that one little chocolate or a drink with friends or a cheat night
or some popcorn at the movies just because I train so much! You have a diet
plan to follow that is made for you and planned out for you by the time you
eat and the amount you eat, everything I eat has to be measured and weighed.
I wish people would understand this and stop telling me I could "afford" to
have some chocolate or something off my diet! This is why I kinda become a
loner when I'm training or I surround myself with other people that are doing
the same thing I'm doing.

Q: What is the best and worst part of competing and the prep process?
A: The best part about competing is meeting all the amazing people that I have
met, and the high I get when I'm on that stage, positive about prepping is I
feel like I'm striving for a goal and it feels pretty damn good. When I wake
up in the morning it feels so awesome to wake up and know I have a goal and
dream I'm fighting for! I used to hit the snooze button 5 times now I jump
out of bed before the alarm and say to myself how am I gonna get that much
closer to my dreams!

The negative is definitely the food cravings lol. I tend to hibernate and stay in my
bubble when I'm prepping or staying around people that are prepping as well.
But sometimes I do enjoy getting out and when everyone else is eating yummy
food and chocolate and I can only have water it sucks! But all worth it!
Peak weak when my coffee is cut STAY AWAY!

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: I really admire my coach number one Robin MacGowan, she has been a huge
inspiration for me and huge source of motivation! She is such an amazing
coach and amazing friend!

Emily Stirling is also someone I really admire and look up to! She has done
so well in the fitness industry and come such a long way and has never let
it go to her head or changed the way she was! She is such an AMAZING friend
and she looks so amazing and is gonna kill WBFF in September! I'm so excited
to finally compete with her!

Kathy Morris is who got me into all this and has been my biggest supporter,
there are no words to say how much she has meant to me and how much I
appreciate her!

Last but not least Maria Lalous is someone I met during my prep for my first
competition and we became very close! I consider her one of my best friends
and I couldn't have done this first competition without her! We now are
training together for our second competition and I cant wait to see her
shine in that figure stage! Maria you are beautiful and such an inspiration
for me, remember you always have a support system in me :D

There are many others i look up to, Nicole Moneer Guerrero, Vanda Hadarean,
Karma Schopp, Kimberley More and many more!

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Pizza, sushi, chocolate covered almonds, Brazil nuts, apple crumble, bread
and butter, and Oreo ice cream!! hmmmmmm

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one
piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Do it girl! Don't let anyone hold you back, fight till you get to your goal,
train hard, get rid of the haters and prepare to work harder then you ever
have in your life! DON'T EVER GIVE UP!

Also find yourself a really good coach and stick with him/her. A lot of
people are going to try and give you so much different advice that you may
want to listen to, your coach knows your body and knows whats right for you
so you need to have 100 percent trust in them and tell everyone thank you
very much but I'm fine :D

Q: Do you think it is becoming more accepted in society for women to be in
the gym training as hard as men?
A: Yes I think there is more woman then men that are training harder and
harder. At my fitness competition there was over 60 women and only about 20
men. Now that there is the bikini and fitness model categories more and more
woman are getting interested and I think that is awesome!

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love to travel, shop, movies, being with friends, I like to go out to good
restaurants and eat good food. I love spas and getting pampered, what girl
doesn't.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Jacqueline Curl.
A: I wake up at about 5 or 6 am and I'm always starving when I wake up! I eat my
breakfast which is my favourite meal of the day. I usually go to the gym, I
like to train first thing in the morning because that's when I have the most
energy. I'm a personal trainer for Total Home Training here in Montreal, so
usually after the gym I'll train my clients, but I have them at all different
times if the day. I'm usually in the kitchen prepping my meals for the week,
that's my favorite room in the house lol.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I'm very hard on myself and very critical, I'm very sensitive, I cry a lot. I
also struggle a lot, every day is a battle to make ends meat! I was never
handed anything on a silver platter and have had to work damn hard to get
everything I have! I know one day I'll get everything I want, I just gotta
keep patient and positive! Success doesn't happen over night!

Q: Describe Jacqueline Curl in five words.
A: Confident, Fierce, Gregarious, Sensitive, Go getter.

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: I'm competing again on May 29th with FCPAQ in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and
WBFF in September. I'd like to take my fitness career to the next level, I
would love to break into fitness modeling and go as far as I can go! I also
want to take a break after WBFF and train and mold my body to really be
elite this time next year!

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Number one my sponsors and manger RescindX™ Clothing, they have been such an
amazing support and friends through all of this! They make some amazing
clothes and are amazing people! Thank you Bruce and Chantal for everything
you do!

Total Home training (http://www.totalhometraining.com/) the company I work for, another one of my sponsors. COMPLETE WORKOUT ANYTIME ANYWHERE NO
EQUIPMENT NEEDED!

UFE for my first fitness experience and allowing me to shine on their stage.

Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are
they getting in Jacqueline Curl the athlete and competitor?
A: I'm always looking for sponsors, this sport is not easy to afford but its my
passion and my dream and if I could have some financial support to be able
to make my dreams come that much closer I as your sponsored athlete would
do anything and everything I could to promote you. I have so much passion
for what I do and when I'm passionate about something and believe in
something I work hard and I take it very seriously! This is my life and this
is what I live for!
Contact me at jaxy_c@hotmail.com
Or my manager at sales@rescindx.ca

Q: Jacqueline, again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last
words before you go?
A: Don't ever give up and don't let anyone hold you back. Don't ever doubt
yourself or think you can't do something. When someone tries to hold you
back get rid of them and work that much harder.

"Drive is like a furnace, constantly fueling you with everything you need;
mentally, physically, and spiritually. Drive isn't just an ingredient to
success - it's everything."

Jenny Beland Interview

Jenny Beland is a newer competitor I was lucky to come across. Having done her first two fitness model competitions in 2009, she has a very bright future. Already with a 1st place and a 2nd place in those two shows, it is apparent she is bound for great things. Beautiful and with a great physique, she also has a long career in fitness modeling ahead of her. Jenny is also a very kind woman and a pleasure to talk to. Jenny is a name you are going to be hearing a lot more about in the future, so here is your chance to get to know her a little bit.

Q: First, Jenny, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: It's my pleasure :) I think your blog is fabulous to promote fitness/bodybuilding woman and I'm honor to be part of it!
By the way,Sorry for my English Jason,it ain't perfect lolll!

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I'm dynamic and cheerful 32 years old girl who lives in Montreal,Qc,Canada but grew up in a little village called Richmond. I've always been a girl that needed some thrill and challenge in my life...I think that's why I moved in the big city ;) lolll! I enjoy being with friends and family when the occasion comes... cause I have to admit, training and working occupy most of my time.

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: Not really....As a child I used to do figure skating, karate and played baseball but when I became a teenager I left this stuff on the side. I was more a party girl then a athletic girl lolll!

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: My boyfriend! I meet him and he was training...On top of that, I was close to turning 30 and I decide that it was time to change my life around and I subscribed myself at the gym...I felt the needed to do something positive and good for myself!

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: Soon has I started,I took it very seriously but I trained for 2 years without being satisfied with my shape...Yes I saw results but it wasn't what I wanted! So I started to look for a personal trainer,BEST MOVE I EVER DID :)! 6 weeks after,I had lost 10% bodyfat and gained close to 10 pounds in muscle mass by changing my diet,my training and using MVP Biotech products!

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I saw some pictures of Fitness women and realized that's what I wanted to look like! I tough they were so beautiful!

Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: I never felt that my friends and family weren't approving of my decision, but it was hard for them to understand at the beginning what my passion was all about...Specially for the diet part.

Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: It was even more fun that I thought :) The surprise was me,how I felt! I thought I'd be nervous on stage, but not at all! I felt like this was made for me!!!

IFBB Pro Ann Titone Interview

Imagine being new to training and struggling with it and your diet. Then imagine someone offers their time to help. Then imagine they are someone you have great respect for, and oh yeah, they are an IFBB Pro. That's what happened with me. Ann Titone offered her help, and I take every word she says as the gospel. I always have nice things to say about each person I interview, but with Ann I can go on for days. Before I started doing what I do and talking with who I talk with, Ann was just this beautiful Figure competitor who I was a huge fan of and really admired and respected. Turns out, with all her great qualities that made her that beautiful woman, the most beautiful part is her heart. Ann the competitor is a woman who overcame a terrible accident that left her in a coma, and went on to train hard, and earn her Pro card. Ann the trainer is a woman who has, with the help of her husband Jack, formed the Jacked Up Divas, and help a lot of women get on stage looking and placing better than they ever have. Ann the woman is someone who is an inspiring, kind, motivating, and special woman. Ann has repeatedly expressed confidence and belief in me. And don't take it from me, look and read how many competitors have said such things about Ann. Meeting Ann at the Arnold's was truly one of the greatest experiences of my life. I can truly say I am a better person because I know Ann Titone. And her and Jack's Jacked Up Divas are an extension of Ann. If you know me, you know I go out of my way to make the Diva's look as good as possible, because they are all special women, and I think that in part is due to two things. One being that I think being around the Titone's makes you a more positive person, and I think it shows the quality of women they help. There are so many people who are better because of the fitness industry and being it it, but the Fitness industry is better because it has Ann Titone in it.

Q: First, Ann, I can't thank you enough fro doing this. You know how big a fan I am, so this is an honor for me.
A: Thank you. It's an honor for me to be a part of your site.

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I am an IFBB Pro Figure competitor, happy and excited to say exclusively managed by Fitness Management Group.
I was born in Hamilton, Bermuda. My daddy was in the navy, so naturally I was a Navy Brat. I moved around a lot as a kid but when my father retired in 1993, Missouri became my "home".

Q: Before you started training, were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports?
A: I wasn't really "athletic" in high school. Moving around a lot made it difficult to commit to a sports team. however, my senior year of high school I played basketball as a small forward until I was in my traumatic car accident that left me warming the bench the entire season.

Q: What mas the major influence in you deciding to get in the gym and start training?
A: I was in a very traumatic life threatening car accident. Paramedics used the "Jaws of life" to remove me from my vehicle and I was Arch Helicoptered to St. Louis University Emergency Room. Upon my arrival I was comatose; the Dr.'s told my family if I made it through the night my life would be very difficult. I spent two weeks in a comma after which I completed 2 months of physical and occupational therapy. You may read my entire story at bodysport.com.

Q: You are obviously beautiful. Did that ever cause a problem with being taken serious at the gym? Ever feel you had to prove yourself?
A: I honestly believe in my heart that the only person I need to prove myself to is myself. I fully believe there is always room for improvement no matter how great an athlete you become.

Q: When was your first contest and what made you decide to compete?
A: After the accident I was a "gym rat", but never quite had the "drive" or "direction" to become anymore than that. One evening at a Christmas party, my friend Angie Semsch was the one who suggested I compete while my husband, Jack, encouraged me further. With the Lord's strength and Jack's direction I have overcome the obstacles that were placed in front of me to become an IFBB Pro.
My first competition was the GNC Indiana Regional in May 2007. I thought it was gonna be a small show where I could just get a little experience. I was sadly mistakes. I did, however, place 3rd.

Q: Was the first show what you expected or did anything surprise you?
A: I didn't know it was a Regional show until I got there. Fortunately, Jack had me well prepared.

Q: Was competing something your friends and family supported?
A: I think like most women, at first family and friends don't understand how that "one bite" will affect what you have worked so hard to accomplish. But as they see you progress and improve they become more supportive. My family is by far my greatest fans and biggest supporters.

Q: You earned the Pro card, that anyone who follow the sport knew you would get at some point, at the 2009 Team Universe. Can you describe the feeling of finding out you were getting the pro card?
A: Plainly put, I was overcome with excitement and the sense of accomplishment. I was elated to get my Pro card in New York. New York will always hold a special place in my heart because of that.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: My first competition was in June of 2007 in Indiana, I placed 3rd. I got 'the bug' to compete..... I could list all the shows I have done but there are actually 19 since my first show, so instead I'll just tell you 2009-current.
*May 2009- NPC Jr. USA - 1st
*June 2009- NPC Jr. nats - 6th
*July 2009- NPC Team Universe - 2nd (Earned Pro card)
*October 2009- IFBB Border States - 9th
*November 2009- IFBB Kentucky Muscle - 7th
*February 2010- IFBB Phoenix Pro - 13th
*April 2010- IFBB Nigh of Champions Europa (Orlando)- 8th
*May 2010- IFBB Pittsburgh Pro - 14th

Q: Is there a body part you think is your best or that gets the most compliments?
A: I would have to say it's either my shoulders or my back, they are the most defined.

Q: Do you have a favorite part to train?
A: No doubt it's my shoulder routine, I love the pump, it's a great feeling.

Q:When people see your physique for the first time, what is the most common response? More positive or negative?
A: Positive, usually they are pretty shocked, it's actually quite funny to see the reactions.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question you are most sick of hearing?
A: It's gotta be..."How much do you workout?"

Q: DO you have anyone in the sport you are a fan of or admire?
A: Gina Aliotti is one that I admire a lot. She has a gorgeous physique!

Q: You are also an NPC judge. What do you enjoy about that?
A: Well, I am sure I have said it a million times, but I love every aspect of this sport, and being an NPC judge is just another way I get to enjoy giving back to the sport. It's truly an honor.

Q: Most people know you and your husband, Jack, are great trainers and nutrition coaches, as well as having your posing and presentation program. What do you enjoy about that and what are the benefits of being trained by the two of you?
A: Because we both love this sport so much, it brings great joy to us personally to do something together that we both have such a passion for. I firmly believe that if you love what your doing, you are able to give 110% of your life to it and having him as my partner, working side by side, is a blessing.

Q: If someone came up to you and said they wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would want to give them?
A: Set a goal... and 'You must believe, before you can achieve'.

Q: Are there any major misconceptions about women who train/compete, or anything you wish people understood?
A: "Just because you lift weights, doesn't mean you're going to lose your feminine figure"!

Q: You have helped many women place very well in contests. How do you feel when you see someone you helped do really well in a competition?
A: Oh my gosh!!!! It's one of the best feelings ever! It's an exuberating feeling that can't be put into words. There's nothing like it.

Q: If someone wanted to contact you about training, what is the best way?
A: All personal training questions can be directed to www.anntitone.com

Q: What does it mean to you for someone to say you are an inspiration to them or they are a fan of yours?
A: It's an honor and makes me want to be the best I can be at all times.

Q: You have your hand in a lot of different things. Wat to take this opportunity t plug or promote anything, tell people what you may have going on.
A: Our group of competitors, "Jacked Up Divas" is who I want to promote. The definition of Jacked Up Divas is a group of women who compete and train at the highest level. They are Ladies who want to be the best at what they do. These ladies lead by example! We are always searching for those women who are worthy of joining our team.

Jack and I also have a talk show on siouxcountry.com called The Fitbod Talk Show. We strive to provide useful and interesting information to all who are curious about the world of competitive women in the NPC and IFBB. They push out that extra rep, run that extra mile and put the effort in at becoming their best. These ladies want to be the best since they are trained by the best.

Thirdly, Jack and I promote a Novice show here in St. Louis, Missouri called The Midwest Classic. It is generally held around April 24th or so. We are in high hopes of bringing more opportunities for competitors to St. Louis in the near future. It is also our primary goal to make every competitor understand they will be competing in the worlds most top notch organization.

Q: What is your normal training routine like?
A: Generally I wake between 6-7am, do my cardio within 15 minutes of awakening. I always separate cardio from my weight training by several hours and seldom do cardio on leg day. I weight train 5 days a week at high intensity.

Q: When you are done competing, how would you like to be remembered in the sport as far as a competitor?
A: I simply want to be remembered as a true athlete who loved everything about the sport and strived to inform the public just how rewarding the sport of weight training and competing is.

Q: Outside of training and competing, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, watching movies, playing board games, or just conversing.

Q: Can you describe a day in the life of Ann Titone.
A: Probably much like any other dedicated competitor. I wake up early, do my cardio, eat my breakfast, train my clients, train myself, train more clients, prepare my food for the following day, sleep, and repeat.

Q: Favorite actors, TV shows, musicians?
A: Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors, City of Angels is one of my most favorite movies, I love watching Kings and Queens with my husband and I am a fan of all kinds of music, I don't really have a favorite.

Q: Describe Ann Titone in five words.
A: Real, Honest, Trustworthy, Loyal, and Hardworking.

Q: Favorite cheat food?
A: No question about it....PIZZA. My post comp meal always has to include a pizza, cheeseburger, burrito, and some kind of dessert, I'm not too picky.

Q: ANy set plans for the rest of 2010 as far as competing or any otehr activities?
A: I amv ery excited to say my 2010 will be a prosperous one with the help of my new manager with Fitness Management Group. Currently my plans include the New York Pro in July and then I we will see what happens after that with.

Q: Ann, I can not thank you enough for taking the time for this. Any last words before you go.
A: Whole heartedly, I want to thank the Lord for Blessing me for not only the great gifts of my life, but for each and every trail and tribulation I have faced and overcome. I am a stronger person mentally and spiritually because of those obstacles.

Erika Shingary Column

I'm at the gym this week and notice a young girl working out with her boyfriend. He's been there for a while, but she is just starting. As I'm watching them, I notice her form is terrible and he's not correcting her! So I watch a little longer and see how he does. Not as bad, but not that good either.

I see this all the time and I so badly want to walk over and yell, "You're doing it wrong!!!" Now that could offend or worse, scare someone who is just starting. I won't name my gym, but I think it should be policy for gyms to have trainers walking around to offer advice to people. Too many gyms require that you hire their personal training services to get any help whatsoever.

I understand how it is to be new in the gym. The equipment can be very intimidating. I was lucky that my husband was very experienced and willing to train me. Even with all my complaining in the beginning, he stuck by me! The most important thing he would stress is to have proper form and control the weight.

It isn't always about how much weight you are using, but rather what you are doing with the weight. If you are using it properly, you will see dramatic results in your hard work. There are many things I do where I use little or no weight at all. But no matter what your goal is, it needs to be done correctly.

So if you are just starting out and you don't have a trainer, look around. Watch other people on the equipment and don't be afraid to ask questions! Most people, like myself, will not come to you to tell you you're doing something wrong. But, if you ask, we are always more than happy to help and show you. People in the fitness industry are some of the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet. And the all truly have a want to help anyone who asks. Its a common interest that we love talking about!

SO do your homework and make sure that the time you are spending at the gym will pay off by doing everything correctly. Not to mention that you don't want to cause any injury to yourself either!!!

Happy workouts!!!!!!!! :-)
