Skye Taylor Interview
Skye Taylor is someone I have quickly become very very impressed with. Between her beautiful looks, incredible physique, and love for what she does, I think Skye has the potential to be a real big name in the fitness industry. In fact I think she has the ability to be a big name both with competing and modeling. Her overall win at the Nevada State shows already that she is on her way to big things, and I really expect them to keep getting bigger and bigger. Remember the name Skye Taylor.
Q: First,Skye, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: My pleasure!:)
Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I am such a family girl. I have three sisters and one older brother. I was born and raised in Utah. Two years ago moved to Las Vegas to work as a hair stylist on the strip:) I love it here and now I feel like I am more of a city girl!
Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A: Yes:) I danced and did gymnastics all growing up, then at about age 14 decided to do cheerleading for junior high, high school and college! Always been active and love staying busy!
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: One of my cheerleading friends invited me to a cycling class in high school and after that I became hooked!
Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: Yes and no. Yes because I started training with a trainer right out of high school with my mom. I always forced her to come with me... I immediately saw results when I was focused on my training:) No because I think it takes time getting to know proper form. At first, my form wasn't that great but over time I have realized how important form really is!
Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: After moving to Las Vegas, I started up with a trainer here. He told me he thought I genetically had the body to compete. I was so unsure in the beginning because I was so afraid to look like a man. Little did I know how much time and effort it takes to actually get that big. I have always been goal oriented and passionate about staying in shape! Needless to say he convinced me and here I am! Now I am hooked...
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: Yes and No. My family is very supportive, but at the same time they think I am crazy because I don't really have a life besides work and the gym. It is hard for people to understand the discipline required to compete. You can have a life outside of training as long as you have you prioritize what is most important to you:)
Q: Was competing what you expected? Did anything surprise you about it?
A: No, it's much better! I am a very competitive girl and I always strive to do my best! It is a whole new world but I love the effort I put in and the results I get out of it!
Q: Can you share your contest history
A:
*Nevada State Bodybuilding 2010- Bikini 1st Place and Overall
*Junior USAs- 13th place
Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: Hmmm... I would have to say my butt. I feel nothing is ever perfect but as far as something I don't have to work that hard for, its my butt.
Q: Do you have a part you most like to train?
A: Yes! I love training shoulders!
Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A: Normal training is strength training 4 times a week and cardio 5 days a week for about an hour. Contest prep we do a lot more circuit training to keep my heart rate up and add in more cardio about 6 days a week 2x a day. Cardio is generally split into two sessions one in the morning and one in the evening.
Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: More positive. I love it because it actually inspires more people to workout and eat healthy. A few of my co-workers actually have lost a lot of weight from being inspired by my hard work and I feel so honored to have that effect on others:) It also motivates me to become better when I see others looking up to me!
Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: Haha. Oh I get a ton of questions but the main question is,"What?? You workout THREE hours a day, how do you find time?" then my response is I make time! It is so easy to put working out aside, like anything else we have to make time for it:)
Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: Girls automatically think if they train with weights they are going to look like a guy! Even I did at first. The ONE thing they don't understand is look how hard those guys have to work to put on ALL that muscle. Women need to understand that the more muscle we have on our bodies the more calories we burn through out the day! Cardio is good but too much is a bad thing, we all need to incorporate strength training in with the cardio because they go hand in hand:)
Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The best part is stepping on stage knowing how much hard work and dedication it takes to be there. The worst part is the last few weeks you are just so mentally and physically drained!
Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Oh yes sooo many! Anyone who steps on stage I admire! But a few of my favorites are Nathalia Melo, Amanda Latona, Kathleen Tesori and of course I love Jamie Eason:)
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Yes of course! I love sweets... My favorite would probably have to be the pumpkin bundt cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes... sooo yummy!
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Motivation comes from within. If you really want something you have to work hard to get it. To tie it in with training, you have to always keep up on it. Not everyone always feels like getting up a few hours earlier to go to the gym, but that is what it takes. Hard work and dedication will always lead you to your goal as long as you stay committed!
Q: Is fitness modeling something that interests you?
A: Yes! I am just getting started, but I love it! I really enjoy working with a lot of different photographers. My goal is to be featured on the cover of Oxygen or M&F Hers one day!
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love my job and am passionate about doing hair and make-up. I also enjoy the outdoors; boating is one of my favorites, I enjoy camping, snowboarding, and the most important I LOVE being with my family.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Skye Taylor?
A: I wake up early hit cardio , go to the gym to meet with my trainer, go to work (hair stylist), come home quickly only to go back to the gym for round 2 cardio! My life pretty much revolves around working out:)
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I haven't had a boyfriend in 2 years:) I don't really have time, or I guess I could say haven't made the time for one! haha...
Q: Describe Skye Taylor in five words.
A: Strong-willed, Energetic, Determined, Motivated, and Happy
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: Yes! As of now I am thinking the Arnold and hopefully the USAs again next year!
Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: My trainer Carlous Pitts for talking me into this craziness and transforming me into a stronger person mentally and physically. The support I get from all my family and friends! Fit Treasures Calendar which I am featured in and it is going to be launched at Olympia, and Danny Fittro, an amazing photographer/friend who is always motivating me to become better!
Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so how can they reach you and what are they getting in Skye Taylor the athlete and competitor?
A: Yes I am currently seeking sponsors. They can reach me through my email at smtaylor_14@yahoo.com. I am also currently working on my website which will be up and running soon at skyetaylor.com (make sure to check it out)! As an athlete/competitor l am always looking to inspire and motivate other people! I am a very determined person and I am also willing to work as hard as necessary to achieve my goals:)
Q: Skye, again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words before you go?
