Vanessa Prebyl Team Universe Interview
Vanessa Prebyl just missed out on her Pro card at Team Universe. As of this typing she is doing USA's and has a shot at it. It is hard for me to be unbiased about Vanessa, as she is a friend and a writer for this blog. However I have such respect for Vanessa. She is an amazing competitor who is possibly unmatched when it comes to combining beauty, intelligence, physique and attitude in the industry. Whether it comes this year or not, Vanessa is a lock for a Pro card.
Q: Vanessa, thanks for taking the time to do a second interview.
A: Anytime Jason, I am always happy to do interviews.
Q: For those who may have missed the first interview, can you tell us a little about yourself?
A: I am a small-town girl from California. About a year ago I changed my life and emerged myself in to a healthy lifestyle. In November of 2009 I entered into my very first show taking 5th and have been competing ever since. I have always been very active because I lived on a ranch and had to do chores like take care of all of the animals (horse, sheep, cows, chickens, etc.). I also played many sports such as cross-country, track and five years of wrestling. I would consider myself a tom-boy. I also must say I love my life and I love the competitor’s life style. The best feeling is when I step on stage. It is such a rush!
Q: First I must say congrats on 3rd place at Team Universe. I thought you looked incredible.
A: Thank you so much Jason. I work extremely hard and practice posing all the time. All of the women looked so beautiful and I was very proud to step on the stage with such AMAZING women.
Q: As a show itself what did you think of it?
A: The show was great! Steve Weinberger always puts on great shows. This year Team U was held in NJ and of course the area was going through a heat wave at the time. I remember getting off of the air plane and I instantly started sweating. We arrived at 1am and it was in the 90’s. On top of the heat it was also very humid. As a California girl it took me some time to get acclimated to the weather. As for the actual show, it ran very smoothly. The competitor meetings started on time and the different divisions went very fast and it was nicely organized backstage.
Q: How confident were you going in?
A: As I mentioned before, I work very hard so confidence comes with the hard work. I am confident in who I am and what I have been able to achieve with my body. I feel that confidence is something that has to come from within you and only you.
Q: After pre-judging how were you feeling about your chances?
A: I was sooooooo EXCITED I got first call out!!! I was beaming!! I was placed towards the middle so I felt very good about my chances.
Q: How did you feel about the overall package you brought to the stage?
A: I loved it!! I came in to this show with a little more attitude on stage and with a more relaxed presentation. I have also brought up my glutes and delts so I felt I had something to show off.
Q: What part of your physique would you say was the one you have improved the most the last year?
A: Almost a year to the day I started seeing Kim Oddo and my whole life changed. I lost 45 pounds and created the body of my dreams. So not only have I improved my body in every aspect, but my health and confidence has sky rocketed and I feel AMAZING. I truly live the life of my dreams.
Q: Is there one aspect of your physique you thought could have been better or you want to improve on?
A: Haha.. That’s a loaded question for any competitor. There are always improvements to be made. However, I would like to focus on building up my glutes and increasing the size of my rear delts. I feel in the bikini division nice round glutes are a must.
Q: Did your prep go as smoothly as hoped for?
A: Almost too smoothly. My last show I was very lean so in order for me to become a little softer I was able to have my peanut butter and carbs all the way up to the day of show. The added food allowed me to push all of my workouts much harder and I did not become as tired.
Q: Is there a point in the prep process where you say "O.K. I am ready"?
A: This competition prep was short for me because my last show was not too long ago. With that being said, I have been ready and I was just waiting for the show day.
Q: Anything about the prep process that you can say you want to do different next time?
A: I leave all of my preparation up to Kim Oddo. He is an AMAZING nutritionist and I trust all of my prep to him. He really knows what he is doing and what he says is GOLDEN!!!
Q: After a show like that, are you mentally drained at all?
A: Drained NO… More like ENERGIZED!!! I love the stage!! I feel like I light up from the inside out. I actually have a show in two weeks!! USA’s in Las Vegas on July 30-31. Wish me luck!! I am going for my Pro-Card again ;)
Q: The week before a show like that, what were you thinking about? Nervous or excited, or what?
A: A week before the show I am excited and busy making sure all of my appt. are in line such as hair, makeup, tan, nails and travel plans. I am also packing up all of my clothes and food and calling Kim Oddo one last time before my flight takes off to my destination.
Q: How about those last 5 minutes before you hit the stage, what were you thinking about?
A: Oh well this time was a little different from my last shows. As I waited backstage it was very hot, as I mentioned the heat wave, and I was trying not to sweat off my tan. Haha. Well thankfully Jan Tana was backstage to do touch ups. This time I wanted my presentation to be more natural so I really wanted my feelings to show through on the stage. I love the stage and I am very comfortable up there so I wanted to show that to the judges. I did practice all of my poses about 6 or 7 times just to make sure I was hitting them all exactly how I wanted to.
Q: When you are on stage did you try and read the judges reactions at all or just focus on what you are doing?
A: I figure all the work has already been done so I do not try to read the judges reactions. I do focus on what I am doing and my presentation. I also listen to what the judges ask. I already have my number memorized so when they call it I waste no time doing exactly what they want.
Q: What’s the first thing you ate once the show was over?
A: I have the same cheat meal each time I am done with a show, Chicken-cheese quesadilla and red velvet cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. This meal is probably the worst thing in the world for you, but it covers all the cravings in one meal. After the show my husband and three of my beautiful friends that were also in the show all walked over to the cheesecake factory to celebrate. Good times :)
Q: Were there any other competitors you noticed who really impressed you?
A: I must say the Bikini Division is really starting to make a stand. All of the women looked so good. The women’s bodies are now tighter and more fit with a feminine softness. The competitors I found looked AMAZING and had great presentation are Vanessa Campbell (Bikini Class C) and Nicole Nagrani (Bikini Class B). Both women are from Team Bombshell and you have to give that team credit. All of their girls presented well and were in great shape. I also just checked the placings for the Tampa Pro Bikini show and both placed top 3!!!
Q: Anyone you got to meet or see for the first time that you were excited about?
A: The IFBB Figure women were also competing and I had the opportunity to meet Cheryl “Brownie” Brown. She was very nice and she looked AMAZING. She ended up taking the show.
Q: How important is support from family and friends at a show like this?
A: The support of my husband in KEY. He is AMAZING!!! He helps me with my meals and helps me schedule my traveling plans. He is always there for me and is very positive about me competing.
Q: Have you decided when you will be on stage next?
A: YES!! Two weeks until USA’s in Las Vegas on July 30-31. WhooHoo!! Wish me luck!! There are over 400 people already entered into this National show.
Q: Anyone you want to thank for helping you in the process?
A: I have to thank Kim Oddo, he truly changed my life and I can’t express the gratitude I have for that man. Also, my husband who has always been there for me through the good and bad days.
Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: Of course Kim Oddo and the Body by O team http://bodybyo.com/
And an awesome website http://promotingwomen.blogspot.com/
Also I have to give thanks to the NPC for putting on all the shows and supporting the new division of Bikini.
Q: Vanessa you have become a friend and someone I really admire, and as I always say, a lock to earn that Pro card soon. Any last words before you go?
A: I just want to say thank you for always being a friend and being so positive.
Competitors Edge by Vanessa Prebyl
A Weekly Blog By Nationally Ranked Bikini Competitor Vanessa Prebyl
Hi Everyone!!! This week I would like to talk about the USA’s coming up July 30-31 in Las Vegas.
The USA’s are a national show that will be held in VEGAS!!! And yours truly will be in the car driving to that awesome city tomorrow morning. There are over 400 competitors that will be competing in the show and thankfully the show will be held over two days.
As a bikini competitor I will be going on stage for prejudging on Friday and Finals on Saturday. I am so excited about the competition and I am completely ready to take the stage. I have all of my hair, makeup, and tanning appointments confirmed and have all of my food and clothes packed up.
Also the promoters were very thoughtful of the competitors and picked a hotel that provides a mini refrigerator and microwave in each hotel room. This is sooooooo convenient for competitors that are traveling with all of their food. I am very very happy about that :)
If anyone wants to stay updated with the results of USA’s you can always check out;

Sportsmanship by Jessica True
Sportsmanship
“Sportsmanship expresses an aspiration or ethos that the activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitors. Being a “good sport” involves being a “good winner” as well as a “good loser.”
As mentioned in my previous blog, this sport is political and subjective to the perspective of who’s judging. I believe the best way you can handle ANY situation is to be classy, hold your head high and hopefully you did the best you could. You can’t be disappointed hottie on the outside doesn’t mean you’re worth a $#%* on the inside.with that!
Tips for the self-absorbed ;)
*There’s always going to be someone better than you.
*There’s more than one way to skin a cat. Just because you do something that works for you, doesn’t make it the only way to do something. Don’t criticize someone that doesn’t train the way you do.
*You know the saying, “beauty is only skin deep.” Just because you’re a
I think it’s important to remember that God made us all unique and how boring would the world be if we were all the same! People do things for different reasons. It’s hard enough for most to step onstage with next to nothing on for hundreds of people to point out their flaws. Be delicate when offering CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM.

IFBB Pro Michelle Battista Team Universe Interview
Winning a Pro card is amazing. But coming from where Michelle Battista came from to earn her Pro card at Team Universe is even more amazing I think. I could sit here and tell you about it, but she address's it in the interview, so I will let her explain it. Winning the Pro card is just one step in where Michelle will eventually end up, as there is no limit to just how far she can go in this sport. Rarely do you see me implore sponsors to look into a woman in these introductions, but Michelle is someone, who if you sponsor competitors, you need to get involved with.
Q: Michelle, thanks for taking the time out to do this.
A: You are so welcome and thank you for having me an opportunity to be interviewed.
Q: For those who may not be familiar, can you tell a little about yourself?
A: My name is Michelle Battista and I am a new IFBB Figure Pro. I started competing about 4 years after transforming my body from being almost 80lbs overweight. I had herniated two disks in my back from competitive horse riding and according to the surgeons, surgery was my only option. After 14 years of miserable pain and depression (plus countless different types of treatment), I knew that I could not continue down this path. I knew that I had to dig deep within to find the courage to get back to the gym and strengthen my back the right way (and not always look for the easy way out). After losing the excess weight, I found myself needing to challenge myself to a whole new level. After a lot of thought and self-doubt, I decided to go for it and compete in my first show. After two years of competing I became a national level figure competitor with very little help. I have been competing for almost 4 years now and won my pro card at the 2010 Team Universe.
Besides, competing in figure contest, I work full time as an independent technology consultant.
Q: First, I must say congrats on earning your Pro card at Team Universe.
A: Thank you so much. I was in total shock and still waiting for it to sink in :-)
Q: What does the Pro card mean to you personally?
A: This means more to me than you know. During my years of transforming my body and competing, I really have gone through this journey pretty much alone and no family support.
Q: As a show itself what did you think of it?
A: I really enjoyed the show. I met some wonderful people and hopefully some new friends. I think that is why I like competing so much because of the people I have met along the way.
Q: How confident were you going in?
A: I was not feeling as confident as I would have like to. I didn't sleep the night before (not even 10 mins) so I was extremely tired but still managed to find a way to compose myself and be as confident as I could.
Q: After pre-judging how were you feeling about your chances?
A: After prejudging I felt like I knew I made Top 5 but not necessarily that I had taken first.
Q: How did you feel about the overall package your brought to the stage?
A: I very happy with my posing and presentation but felt that there was room for improvement in certain areas of my physique.
Q: What part of your physique would you say was the one you have improved the most the last year?
A: I would have to say that my shoulders improved the most over the past year. I have been training them twice a week which really helped.
Q: Was there one aspect of your physique you thought could have been better or you wan to improve on?
A: Yes, most definitely. I want to improve on my glutes and hamstrings.
Q: Did your prep go as smoothly as hoped for?
A: The initial contest prep was going smooth but towards the end of the prep it got really difficult for me since I had to seriously cut out my carbs.
Q: Is there a point in the prep process where you say "O.K. I am ready"?
A: No!! I think as a figure competitor you never feel like your ready. I wish I had a few more weeks to prepare.
Q: Anything about the prep process that you can say you want to do different next time?
A: I want to manage my off-season a little better so that the contest prep goes a little smoother.
Q: After a show like that, are you mentally drained at all?
A: Not really mentally drained as much as physically drained. I think that "winning" gives you a mental high you're not prepared for.
Q: The week before a show like that, what were you thinking about? Nervous or excited, or what?
A: I was more excited than anything. I don't seem to get too nervous before going out on stage. I just have to think that I have done all that I can and be happy with how far I have come in the past 4 years.
Q: How about those last 5 minutes before you hit the stage, what were you thinking about?
A: I was thinking just about making sure to hit my poses and "to have fun". We all do this sport because we love it and we can't loose sight of why we compete. If you stop having fun then it takes away from the enjoyment of competing.
Q: When you are on stage did you try and read the judges reactions at all or just focus on what you are doing?
A: I always try to stay focus on what I am doing and I try not to worry about anyone else on stage.
When being on stage I just make sure that I am presenting yourself as well as I can.
Q: Whats the first thing you ate once it was over?
A: I went to Cheesecake Factory (I think that is the official after show restaurant). I had half of a salad, a pizza and half slice of peanut butter cheesecake and carrot cake cheesecake :-)it was yummy!!!
Q: Was there any other competitors you noticed who really impressed you?
A: I always like watching the pros because I can learn so much from them such as Ann Titone and Gennifer Strobo. But someone that stands out to me is Tamee Marie. She competed in fitness and she is so powerful on stage and has a phenomenal physique. Her athletic talent is amazing and couldn't be a nicer person.
Q: Anyone you got to meet or see for the first time that you were excited about?
A: I got to finally meet some people that I had talked with on Siouxcountry and Facebook that really made my trip fun such as Lisa Zisa, Tamee Marie and Gennifer Strobo.
Q: How important is support from family and friends at a show like this?
A: I think it is extremely important. I don't know what I would have done without the support of my boyfriend and a few of my friends through this process. My boyfriend put up with my crabbiness for three months and every time I thought I wanted to quit he pushed me forward. I couldn't have done it without his support.
Q: Have you decided when you will be on stage next?
A: I will be making my pro debut at Europa in Dallas, August 14th.
Q: Anyone you want to thank for helping you in the process?
A: I want to thank a few people. To my trainers Jack and Ann Titone for working with me on prepping for this contest which included my diet, training and posing. They have been extremely supportive and have helped me to bring me to the next level. To my girl Lesley Bodine for training with me, for pushing me in the gym, for encouraging me and for taking care of everything while I am way and just for being there as a friend. To my friend Michelle Shepherd for always checking in on me and giving me the added support I needed when things got tough. To my friends Juan Segura and Rigo Lopez for being like brothers to me and always looking after me and being there when I needed a shoulder to cry on. Time Rice for all the help and support over the years. To Siouxcountry.com for being such a great website for information, photos, results and bringing people together. And last but surely not least, my boyfriend Miles McDonald for being my rock!!! I so appreciate his support, encouragement, love and patience with me during this process.
Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: I would like to tell anyone that is looking for contest prep to become part of the Jacked Up Divas Team. It was so nice having support during the contest prep and actually at the show.
I will be seeking sponsorship so if there is anyone out there that would like to sponsor me during my competition efforts, please contact me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/michelle.battista
Q: So how does this sound: IFBB Pro Michelle Battista?
A: Amazing!! Unbelievable!!
Q: Michelle, again, congrats, you really deserved it. Any last words before you go?
A: Just want to say "Thank You" to all of the people that have given me advice along my transformation journey. Realize that you can do anything you put your mind too and you are never too old to accomplish your goals. My motto is "My body is my trophy and my placing doesn't define me."
IFBB Pro Laticia "Action" Jackson Interview
This interview with Laticia Jackson is one of the ones I am truly excited and honored to add. Since winning her Pro card at the 2006 Team universe, Laticia has only gotten better and better. In fact, in 2008 Laticia competed at the Fitness Olympia. Which means she was and is one of the elite. A woman who practices what she preaches, Laticia is a tremendous asset to the industry, and a great person to learn from and be inspired by. Currently out with an injury, do not bet against Laticia, because she WILL be back on that Olympia stage, and she will continue to be one of the best at what she does.
Q: First, Laticia, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: You are more than welcome, it is my pleasure.
Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I am originally from Pensacola, Florida, but I currently reside in Sacramento, California. I am the youngest of three girls. My two older sisters are amazing and totally different from me. They both think I am crazy ( In a good way!!). I have to say, I am the loud one out of the bunch! I am 32 years old, but I still look 19 ( SMILE). If I believed in zodiac signs I would be a Gemini. My older sister tells me I have two personalities but I have to say I don't agree... (Smile). As long as I am not hungry or tired, I am pretty much an outgoing positive person. Currently I am single. At this point in my life, I am taking time out for myself and building my fitness business and learning more about myself. When I meet someone who sparks my interest I will be open to getting to know that person. I want to be with someone who is spiritual, funny, honest, and dedicated. I do not have any children, but one day I want a few little Laticia's running around.
Q: Before the gym, were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports?
A: I get this question all the time. I only played one year of basketball my senior year in high school. I always had athletic abilities, but I didn't enjoy any sports. I didn't start getting into training until I was stationed at my first duty station in Texas. During this time I met someone who was heavily into bodybuilding. He asked if I had ever though about competing as a fitness competitor and I was clueless about the sport. I did some research and thought why not try and compete. He and I trained for 6 months and on May 13, 2000 in Arlington, Texas, I entered my very first fitness competition. I was extremely nervous and did not know what to expect but everything turned out great. Once I stepped on stage, all of my nerves dissipated and I felt right at home. I won my height class and took home the overall fitness title... I have to tell you, I got bite by the fitness bug and I am still in love with competing.
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: I was a cheerleader my first year of college and we had to weight train as a regular part of our conditioning program. I was always very slender and was curious to see if my body would change. After training for 6 months I could see my body change. I was excited to have muscles!!
Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you saw results?
A: Yes, I have God given athletics and I am very disciplined. Once I put my mind to something I grasp it very quickly. It took about 6 months and I could see a huge difference in my body.
Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I have to tell you it was a God thing. I had never competed in any sport before, but I knew I had the natural God given talent. I wanted to see how well I could do. It was a challenge and it has been an amazing journey.
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: I can distinctly remember my older sister saying, "You have to be crazy to be up at 5am in the morning to go to the gym"... Many of them supported me but thought I was from another planet... Years later they know I am serious!! They are great and I love all of them.
Q: Was competing what you expected or did anything surprise you about it?
A: Great question. In life regardless of where you may go, there is good and bad. There are great things about the sport, like the fans and competitors you get to meet. I have people who have followed my career and whenever they see me they always bring family members up to me and tell me they have told them about me. It is an amazing feeling when this happens. The not so great things about the sport are the inconsistencies. You may think you have brought the winning package to one show and not place as high as you may have thought you should. I have learned as long as I walk on stage and feel great, I am satisfied with where I end up placing. Don't get me wrong, I don't train to lose, but as long as I keep that mentality, I am ok with myself.... I always want to get better and better. Just because you get to this level, it doesn't give you permission to slack!!!
Q: You won your Pro card at the 2006 Team Universe. What did winning the Pro card mean to you?
A: Winning meant all my hard work and dedication paid off. It meant that I earned and not handed the title of IFBB Fitness Pro. It meant I can tell the world to go after their dreams and as long as they are willing to be dedicated, persistent and passionate, all things are possible.. I stand proud when I say I am an IFBB Fitness Pro.
Q: You also competed at the 2008 Olympia, finishing a very respectable 8th against a tough field. What was it like to be on stage with the elite, which of course meant you were one of the elite?
A: I have to tell you, I do not believe any group of words can describe that moment. The most amazing part of competing at the Fitness Olympia was how I got there. I turned Pro in 2006, but did not step on stage until 2008. I made my Pro debut on July 4, 2008 at the Houston Pro show. I walked away placing 11th out of 27. Not a bad placing, but it wasn't the best I could do. I was determined to make it to the Fitness O in 2008. Four weeks later, I competed at the Atlantic City Pro Show and placed 3rd which qualified me to compete at the Fitness O.... I told everyone that I was going to make it and I did!!! I placed 8th my first year as a rookie... Having my name called was a moment I will treasure forever.... I will be back on the O stage... Action will be back in 2011.
Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: I have only competed 5 times as a Pro and I have made the top 5 twice and the top 3 once. God is amazing, the world hasn't seen the best of me yet!!!!
*2008 Houston Pro Show- 11th
*2008 Atlantic City Pro Show- 3rd
*2008 Fitness Olympia- 8th
*2009 Europa- 5th
*2009 Atlantic City Pro Show- 5th
Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: Shoulders and legs.
@; Do you have a part you most like to train?
A: I enjoy all of it.
Q: What is your normal training routine like and how do you alter for contest prep?
A: As a professional athlete and a fitness expert with an educational background in Exercise Physiology I believe the body should be healthy in and out of season. Right now I am about 146lbs and I compete around 139lbs. I do not allow my body to get out of shape. I live the lifestyle that I teach. I train 5-6 days per week. My training includes resistance training, plyometrics and interval cardio sessions. I eat a variety of healthy foods. Once a week I try to make sure I try a new fruit or veggies.... Being healthy is about moderation not deprivation.
Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: I would have to say more positive than negative. I do get negative comments but I am to secure within myself to feed into them. I have many people approach me and tell me I am their inspiration. I am humbled and very grateful to hear that.
Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: "Do you workout?" Sometimes I will joke and say no!!!
Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train or compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: I often hear people say men are intimidated because a woman has muscles. Having a strong body does not mean that we do not respect men or want to have authority over them. It is important for people to see the dedication and commitment that goes into attaining a healthy and strong body. I am strong but I am still a woman.
W: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: Worst: The difference in prize money between Pro men and women.
Best: Meeting great people and being in AWESOME SHAPE!!!!
Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: I admire all of them. It takes a lot to do what we do. Many of the women I compete with have children and taking care of a family is hard work. We all should congratulate one another for being able to make it to the stage. Life has many challenges, but we overcome them through challenging ourselves. Competing teaches you so much about yourself!!!
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: I really don't have a favorite... I really like cereal... That really isn't a cheat huh?
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: Make sure you are doing it for all the right reasons. There is a lot of pressure on women to look a certain way. If you want to train do it in order to be healthy and have a sense of self-worth. Don't allow vanity to be your primary motivator. When you choose vanity, you give yup when you don't see quick results.
Q: You are also a personal trainer. What do you enjoy about that?
A: Seeing lives changed. To see people get off medication, less knee and back pain and just overall healthier and happier people. I thank God for my clients. They inspire me to want to continue learning so I can better their lives.
Q: You have a great website. Can you give out the address and tell people what they can find there?
A: Thanks, I am doing some updating to the site. I am in the process of making the site more functional. They will find contest updates, bio information, training and nutrition tips... Stay posted, the updates are going to be great. www.laticiajackson.com.
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I enjoy spending time with family and listening to live Jazz and R&B Music. I love going to the zoo and art museums.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Laticia Jackson.
A: I wake up around 6:30 or 7am. I try to make sure I start off every day with prayer. I believe as long as I ask God to guide me in all of my decisions for the day, everything will go great. My first meal is around 8am. Depending on whether or not I am working or studying, I will head off to the gym to train. I like to train in the mornings when the gym isn't as crowded. The rest of my day, I train clients. I have a wonderful life. How many people wake up excited about their job?
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: My mom is a fraternal twin and my father is an identical twin. Although I am not a twin, my middles sister and I are the same age for 2 months out of the year!!!
Q: Describe Laticia Jackson in five words.
A: Passionate, Loving, Energetic, Determined, and Honest.
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: Unfortunately while preparing for this year for the NY Pro Show I dislocated my left shoulder. The dislocation was a result of a torn ligament in my shoulder. I am scheduled for surgery in September. Due to the lack of stability I have not been able to train my upper body for 4 months. I was upset for a few days then I told myself to get over it. I am not big on complaining and I do not believe in pity parties. I still train around my injury 5-6 days per week.... Nothing stops me!!
Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: My wellness and fitness training company... I am the owner of FNL Wellness and Fitness Training in Sacramento, California. If anyone is interested in learning about proper nutrition, contest prep or just general wellness contact me at (916)677-1890. I am excited about helping people reach their goals.
Q: Are you looking for sponsors? If so what are they getting in Laticia Jackson the athlete and competitor?
A: Most definitely I am looking for sponsors. Without any doubt, they will get an honest, dedicated athlete who believes in integrity and hard work. I am dedicated to bringing a positive face to the sport of fitness. I don't believe in telling someone to apply principles you are not applying yourself. I have an educational background in Exercise Science (BS) Human Performance (AA), Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Lifestyle and Weight management Specialist. My hands on experience and education gives me the ability to understand how supplements work with the body. I am outgoing and people friendly!!!
Q: Laticia, again I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last word before you go?
A: The only limitations are the ones we create in our minds. Our lives are a combination of choices. Choose to believe God has an awesome plan for your life and refuse to believe anything else. Only surround yourself with people who will encourage you but also love you enough to tell you when you are wrong. If you are going to do something, give it all you have. In the end, if you choose to go half way, you are the only one to blame!!!! Dream Big!!!!
Competitors Edge by Vanessa Prebyl
A Weekly Blog By Nationally Ranked Bikini Competitor Vanessa Prebyl
Hello my readers!!! Alright, this week I would like to talk about 10 tips that can make your stage presentation better.
1. Have confidence, confidence, and confidence!!! BY the time you step on stage you should be fully confident in yourself and how your body looks and even if you don't feel that way, FAKE IT!! You cannot change your body at that point so work with what your mama gave you!!
2. Walk around in your shoes and make sure you feel comfortable and are able to walk fluidly.
3. Check your hair. Make sure your hair has volume in the back. If you feel it is falling a little flat, take your fingers and fluff up your hair by going under your hair and fluffing the roots. Avoid fluffing by turning your head upside-down because it will mess up your curls.
4. Check your makeup. Reapply lip liner, lip stick and lip gloss. Make sure all eye makeup is in place and check under your eyes in case your eye liner has smudged. Finally, use a large brush and powder in order to make sure you are not too shiny.
5. Practice your poses. I practice my poses at least 5 times in a mirror back stage just to make sure I am hitting them all exactly how I want.
6. Double check your suit and "bikini bite" any area of the suit you are worried may shift positions as you walk. This will take a lot of worry off of your mind.
7. Put your game face on!! Even before you go on stage. While you are waiting on the side of the stage remember that the judges still are able to sometimes see you so SMILE :-)
8. Walk with good posture as you present your body to the judges/audience.
9. Look at ALL of the judges. You may scan the judges table but I always seem to focus on the center/head judge after I have scanned the judges a few times. Furthermore, the middle judges also have the cameras behind them most of the time.
10. Have FUN!!! THis is your time to show the world how AMAZING you are. Take your time!! It is YOUR moment. :-)

Mind and matter by Sheena Hunter
For the past week, my family and I have been in the middle of a move from Maine to
Georgia, so needless to say I am pretty frustrated with my time off from training, and am itching to get settled in a new gym as soon as possible! But, as I'm finding
out, this may be easier said than done. I have been absolutely spoiled at USA gym in
Bangor, Maine. I started there, so I really didn't know that every gym isn't centered on hardcore powerlifting. It never occurred to me that people go to the gym
for any reason other than to get bigger and stronger. I was sadly mistaken.
I do not mean to put anyone down here—there is definitely something kind of neat about a gym that feels like a trip to the spa. I can appreciate that on some level—after all, I like the spa...but I also like high heels, and I don't train in those,
either. My fiance and I have been seriously considering setting up our own gym in the garage, but until we take the plunge and spend thousands of dollars, we decided to give the local gyms a chance.
Our first stop was a nearby gym historically known for hardcore olympic lifting. We
decided to leave our bags in the car and take a tour, just in case. I've never done that before but I'm glad we did. What we saw was absolutely tragic—it was a
graveyard of equipment (circa 1973?) so tightly crammed into such a small space that
there really is no way anyone could use any of it. The tour took us into a tiny room
reserved for “hardcore powerlifting,” though the guys seemed to assume that I'd
have no use for that room. They were right. The room pretty much consisted of a squat rack crammed into a corner with no room for a bar, another rack crammed across from it, and a barbell stacked on boxes. Needless to say, we got in the car andvowed to never go back.
Our next try was a little better—we actually stayed to train. Despite bad reviews for being badly managed, we found that the management was the only good part. Today was our back day, so we were there to deadlift. Unfortunately, there was no
deadlift platform, or any evidence that anyone had ever deadlifted in this gym. So we did what anyone would do—we set up in front of the squat rack while everyone stared at us. No one was going to squat in that rack anyway. Things went well for a
while, until later when I went looking for a pullup bar. There was not a single one! What kind of gym doesn't have a pullup bar?
Finally, just before I was ready to submit this piece, I received a call back from the owner of a gym known for hardcore powerlifting and strongman training. We visited that gym today and were sincerely impressed by what we found. The owner warnedme (was he trying to scare me off??) that it's not a pretty gym; he was right. Set in what looks like a huge storage unit, the gym is designed to pretty much just get it done. Chains line the walls, and loud music fills the room. There are no cardiomachines (unless you count the prowler and the sled, both of which I am pretty excited about!), and the atmosphere is meant for hardcore lifting. I'm not exactly the most hardcore person you'll ever meet in a grocery store, but I'd rather lift withthose who are, so I can really appreciate this setup!
I am excited about this new gym, and am confident that we will find ourselves in a room full of people more interested in their training goals than in their social goals. It will be nice to make it through my next contest prep in an environment
where I won't be out of the ordinary to anyone. I'm also excited to improve my numbers and learn new techniques from the people around me--this is definitely the place to be during my bulk this fall, so stay tuned!

I've realized something about myself as of late. I'm proud to say I'm a natural born learner.
What I mean by this is I take everything in stride and learn from the experience whether it be in my relationships, career, and yes, even (maybe especially?) the sport of Figure.
Everyone has life experiences, but how we deal with these things is very individual. There are people who can turn nearly everything, even positive journeys, into negatives and allow even the smallest hiccups to bring them down to ground zero, being around these kinds of people can become very emotionally draining. Then, there are those who choose to take everything on as a new experience and no matter what the outcome, or what road blocks pop up during the journey, they come out of the situation with a positive outlook and take it as a learning experience. I have the utmost respect for the latter of the two personalities and I happen to believe I'm in that group.
In regards to relationships, I've had my share of rough ones. They all lasted much longer than they ever should have, mostly caused by me being young and not knowing myself well enough to make smart decisions as well as not having the experience under my belt in order to know what I really want out of a partner. Like most people I've had relationships end on a good note, and then there are a few that have ended horribly. Sure, it sucks, there's no denying that. But in the end I've chosen to take these situations and turn them positive. Each relationship I've come out of I've learned something new about myself, about what I want for my future, and new lessons on compromise, honesty, openness, jealousy and much more. I'm becoming more fine-tuned and comfortable with myself and just being me.
The same holds true with my career. Every day is a new learning lesson. These lessons are of a different variety, but still intertwine with the lessons I learn from relationships. Like many, I deal with a variety of different personalities at work. Some conflict with my own and it's a struggle to work closely with those people, but I don't let it aggravate me (too much) or make my day miserable. I just learn how to interact differently with different people. There's always going to be someone you don't get along with quite as well as you wish, there will be personality conflicts, and heck, I'm not perfect either (what?!). You can either make these experiences ruin your day and cause frustration, or take a step back for a minute, collect yourself, and realize the other person or people are just as frustrated with you. Learn to work with the people in a productive matter, do what needs to be done, and press on through. If you can turn a negative situation into a positive one the people around you will most likely be grateful and more likely to do the same, which make a much more positive and happy environment!
The thing that made me think of all this was someone recently brought it to my attention that they feel the reason I love fitness so much is because, as I mentioned earlier, I am a natural born learner. With fitness it's an on-going process. You learn about yourself through trial and error with both nutrition and training. You learn what sorts of foods will react well with your own body as well as what sort of training gives the best results. There really is no single way to go about all of this, it's very individualized. You learn as you go, and that really is what I love about this sport. I will never reach the point where I'll run out of information to learn about nutrition, training or myself... it's an on-going process that I will be able to make a life long journey out of.
Now, what do you have when you take that journey one step further? You have the challenge of competing.
I've always been a competitor. I always want to be the best. But, for my first show I chose to go a different route with my mindset. I went the route of learning from the experience. I know that in the future I will win (mark my words, darnit!), but I didn't want winning to be all that this is about. I wasn't even sure if I'd LIKE competing (Thank goodness I did!). I had heard it many times before, "prep never goes one-hundred-percent smoothly, life will always throw a curve-ball". Well, life threw a few curve-balls during my prep. First, my boyfriend and who at the time I thought was my biggest supporter dumped me (through text message none-the-less... What? Who does that!?). Next, my very well known and experienced trainer did not pull through as expected. I was eight weeks out, still with no diet and no clue what I was doing, and then he disappears for a week and doesn't return phone calls. Yeah, classy! Lastly, I was sick three times leading up to the show! One of which was during peak week (I was actually hacking up a lung back stage as well, lovely!). Could I have given up? Sure. Did I? Heck no! I was determined to make it to the stage, I was determined to keep my upbeat attitude and find solutions to my problems rather than let the small things bring me down. So, step one: forget about the ex. That came easily. I realized I can do this on my own, this is MY journey, no one else's. Plus, I'm wayyyy too good for him (Duh!). That was an easy (yet at the time, stressful and sad) one to overcome. Step two: find a new trainer and diet plan. Check! I called on an old friend and she got me through the next eight weeks. Easy, breezy! Finally, step three: always carry cold medicine, ha! Now, all of these horrible road blocks seemed like nothing.
In the end, I made it to the stage. Was I competition for the girls? Eh, not really. Was I at my best? Definitely not what I could have been had I had more than 8 weeks, but I brought the best ME that I could bring at that point in my life. And I was beyond proud! I look back on the whole experience and realize how many things I did WRONG. Well, mostly everything! But guess what? I learned from it and I'll never make those mistakes again. Just wait until my next prep, you'll see, all those lessons I learned last time around will allow me to bring an even better ME to that stage. Watch out girls! I'm comin'!!

Allison Moyer Team Universe Interview
This is my third interview with Allison Moyer. I used to say it is hard for me to be unbiased when I talk about Allison because of how much I admire and respect her. But really I am being very biased. I am biased because the respect and admiration I have for her, is something she has earned. Allison's placing at Team U may not have been what she wanted, but Allison is good at being able to figure out what she may need to improve, and there is no doubt she will come back better than before. I have said many times I believe Allison is deserving of her Pro card, and deserved it for awhile. I stand by that belief. I think something that speaks volumes for Allison, is when I talk with newer competitors, Allison is always one of the first they mention in the women they look up to. Allison is a respected, trainer, fitness model, competitor, and woman. I am always HONORED to have Allison do an interview.
Q: Allison, thanks for taking the time out to do a second interview.
A: Thank you very much for asking Jason! Always a pleasure!
Q: For those who may have missed the first interview, can you tell a little about yourself.
A: I'm a national level figure athlete and a professional fitness model. I live in PA, I used to live in Harrisburg and have recently relocated to Lancaster. I run my nutrition and training company, www.alli-fitness.com full time.
Q: First I must say congrats on the Team Universe. I thought you looked incredible.
A: Thank you for the compliment- I appreciate it.
Q: As a show itself what did you think of it?
A: Bev and Steve always put on a great show. As a whole I believe it was far larger then last year's turnout, I thought the competition was tight, especially in figure. I was thrilled to see such a turnout of well conditioned ladies.
Q: How confident were you going in?
A: I was actually fairly confident, despite my low call out and my low placing.
Q: After pre-judging how were you feeling about your chances?
A: I was second to last call out so I was aware I was not on par with what the judges were looking for. I knew after pre judging I had not done well.
Q: How did you feel about the overall package your brought to the stage?
A: Structurally I was very happy with my presentation. I made some drastic changes to the bulk and amount of muscle I previously carried. However I was not satisfied with my conditioning and believe I need to bring a harder and leaner package to the stage. Two days out I was much tighter and crisper and somehow over the last few hours before the show I softened up, which I think really worked against me. Some ladies carry the softer look well, I simply am not one of them.
Q: What part of your physique would you say was the one you have improved the most the last year?
A: My legs, definitely.
Q: Was there one aspect of your physique you thought could have been better or you want to improve on?
A: I still have work to do in terms of streamlining and fine tuning my physique. I also intend on working on my conditioning.
Q: Did your prep go as smoothly as hoped for?
A: I had a wonderful prep. I cannot thank Gretchen (my trainer, GST Fitness) enough.
Q: Is there a point in the prep process where you say "O.K. I am ready".
A: I began seeing that I was ready about two weeks out.
Q: Anything about the prep process that you can say you want to do different next time?
A: Not particularly, I think I'm on the right track I just need more time to downsize and streamline my body.
Q: After a show like that, are you mentally drained at all?
A: Of course, physically and mentally I'm exhausted, in fact much of Sunday and Monday I spent sleeping and lounging. Training and dieting for a show takes a big toll on your mental and physical state and resting is just as important as training. It's imperative to take a few days to let the body re group and adjust after a show.
Q: The week before a show like that, what were you thinking about? Nervous or excited, or what?
A: I'm always nervous, and always excited. I get anxious, I call it "stage stoke". I'm constantly thinking about my diet and my training, my stage time, posing, presentation, the whole gambit. I barely sleep the week before a show which is part of the reason I'm so fatigued post contest.
Q: How about those last 5 minutes before you hit the stage, what were you thinking about?
A: I spent the last 5 minutes backstage with Gretchen. We prayed, she told me she was proud of me, I gave myself a pep talk, and I took a deep breath before stepping out there. There is NO point in being nervous before going on stage- the work is done. At that point in the game the only thing to do is step out there in confidence and OWN that stage. Be proud of yourself, be proud of your hard work, be proud of the journey, and handle yourself with grace and professionalism.
Q: When you are on stage did you try and read the judges reactions at all or just focus on what you are doing?
A: Posing is second nature for me, so I don't need to focus much on it. I'm constantly looking at the judges, smiling and making eye contact.
Q: Whats the first thing you ate once it was over?
A: I went to the Cheesecake Factory with Randy, Gretchen, and my best friend Eryn. I had a grilled chicken salad (fun I know) and a piece of peanut butter chocolate cheesecake!!
Q: Was there any other competitors you noticed who really impressed you?
A: I was thrilled to see some friends of mine get their pro cards, but I'd have to say the overall winner, Jackie impressed me more then anyone. I was fortunate enough to meet her in the changing room, when she introduced herself to me and we talked for a while. She is a humble, beautiful, down to earth woman who will be a wonderful spokesperson for the sport of figure. I'm thrilled she won the overall.
Q: Anyone you got to meet or see for the first time that you were excited about?
A: For me, I love seeing my friends more then anything else. I was stoked to be backstage with Eryn, Jillian Reville, Laura Bailey, and Kat Ramirez. It was great to see my friends!
Q: How important is support from family and friends at a show like this?
A: Support is EVERYTHING. Contrary to common belief this is NOT a solitary sport. My parents were there supporting me, as was my bf Randy. In fact, a few weeks out from my show I was doubting my ability to get on stage and Randy looked at me and said, "You know Allison, this is not just you, I know you're the one dieting and training, but I'm in this too." That really says it all right there, this is a team sport, a group effort. I have a lot of people invested in me- Gretchen and Randy more then anyone. And when I didn't place well at Team U the first thing Randy said was, "We don't give up, we'll re-group and come again." He didn't say "you" or "I", he said "we". Support from my family and friends means more to me then any placing or trophy ever could.
Q: Have you decided when you will be on stage next?
A: I will definitely be at Nationals in October. I have not yet decided on Jr USAS or North Americans. I'm awaiting some feedback from the judges.
Q: Anyone you want to thank for helping you in the process?
A: Oh yes! First and foremost God, because without Him and without His grace I'd never be able to stay strong in my diet and my training. Randy, for his constant love and patience. Gretchen for her motivation, her guidance, and for becoming a close friend. Eryn, because she's my best friend and without her I'd be lost. My parents for being so supportive. My clients for being a HUGE source of inspiration and motivation to me, and all my fans and friends for their messages of love and support.
Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
A: I currently am working on the re-launch of my members only site, www.allifit.com. I'm VERY excited about this project. And of course my company, Alli-Fitness (www.alli-fitness.com), feel free to visit my site and view all I have to offer in the way of nutrition, training, contest prep, weight loss, and lifestyle management. My online modeling portfolio can be viewed at www.allisonmoyer.com.
Q: Allison, again you really looked great. No secret the admiration I have for you. You are one of my favorite people in this industry, and I guarantee a Pro card will be yours. Any last words before you go?
A: Thank you Jason- I appreciate it! The only thing I have to say is that we ALL fail sometimes. We cannot win them all and we all suffer low placings, poor showings, and are sometimes (unfortunately) at less then our best. So many girls place low in a show and quit, or give up. National competition is stiff and sometimes it takes time to achieve a pro card, or to gain that placing you want. I really stress to everyone NOT to give up, learn from your mistakes, learn from your poor placing, grow from it, and move on. We all suffer setbacks in the road to achieving our goals, its how you view those setbacks that defines you as a person and as a professional. Don't get discouraged.
Again, thank you for the interview Jason!!! I appreciate it!!!!

Christina Watson Interview
I have said before, I have met and gotten to know some many people in the industry, that for most, it is all a blur as to when I first came across them. But there are a few that for whatever reason, I remember the first time I saw them. One of those people are Christina Watson. First time I saw her I was in awe at how beautiful she was. Then after getting over that, I was again in awe at her incredible physique. Christina is respected as both a competitor and a fitness model, and it is not hard to see why. Competing for the first time in 2006, and having done a number of shows in that time, Christina has already made a name for herself, and that name is going to continue becoming bigger and bigger. Keep your eyes on Christina Watson.
Q: First, Christina, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: Thank you for selecting me to do this and let me say I am very sorry it took me a couple of weeks to get back with you. But thank you for being so patient with me!
2. Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: Well my name is Christina Watson I'm 30 yrs young, I was born and raised and still live in Ohio. I am the youngest of 6 siblings (2 step). I come from a very close family and some of literally only lives within blocks of each other..LOL. I started competing in April of 06' at which time I won my first show (John Seif) and the overall title. I found a love for this sport on accident actually. I had always worked out but never to this extreme and my diet was not up to pare at all I was what people would call "skinny fat". I sought the help of a trainer in 05' and he noticed how quickly I transformed in very short time frame and suggested I do a show. I had no idea what to expect but let me tell you I loved it and haven't stopped competing since. I believe that I have done somewhere around 15-17 shows (I lost count)! I have recently switch from NPC to INBF organization simply because I believe that living a clean drug free lifestyle is the only way to go! I was very tired of people suggesting that I had or was on some kind of steroid because I can gain so much muscle for a girl, sorry folks but it's called hard work and both of my trainers (Scott and Monty Mabry) can testify that I do put in work to get the results you see today!
Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or
anything?
A: I was never athletic only cheered in grade school and took aerobics classes to maintain weight so that I could feel better. It wasn't until I turned 17 and found out I had Ulcerative Colitis (inflammation of the intestines) that I started to take care of myself. This disease cane make things a little difficult when getting ready for a show or just everyday life for that matter.
Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: My boyfriend was a freak about working out and he tried to teach me proper form and better eating habits but it wasn't until I confessed to him I needed a trainer, I couldn't keep following him around the gym trying to do the same things as him and his friends. I needed the knowledge to get the body that I knew was in there!
Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started
to see results?
A: I picked up training very easy I must say. I would study the movement of my trainer and his form so that I could do my workouts properly. In a sense you are the student and he is the teacher, so I came ready to learn! I saw results in the first month that I began training/dieting.
Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: I had saw a couple of shows in the past and I knew I wanted that physique but it was my trainers encouragement that got me on that stage!
Q: Was competing something your family and friends supported at the time?
A: O yes, my family are huge supporters of everything I do. I can honestly say that by seeing me achieve goals through training and diet it has motivated my family do make better food choices and to start working out even if it's just walks in the evening something is better than nothing.
Q: Was the first competition what you expected? Did anything surprise you?
A: My first show was a total shocker! I remember being in the pump up room looking at those girls like OMG they look great and have awesome suits. I was just in a fog because I didn't get nervous at all I was just ready to get up there and hope I didn't fall over in those shoes...LOL! I couldn't believe it when I won my class and the overall. I truly didn't get how transformed my body was until I saw the pictures the next day, that's when it hit me ( I had arrived)!!
Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: Too many to list, but I can tell you I competed in the Arnold Classic Amateur in 08', Junior Nationals 09', and most recently my first INBF show this past April.
Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one/
A: It's a toss of between my abs and back, they are both pretty noticeable.
Q: Do you have a part you most like to train or favorite exercise?
A: I love anything shoulders, a great set of shoulders can bring balance to the rest of your body.
Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like, and how do you alter it
for contest prep?
A: I use to have a set routine MON/WED - leg days, Tues - chest/triceps, Thurs - Back/biceps, Fri - shoulders, Sat - Bootcamp, Sun - off or light cardio, I keep abs in my workouts everyday. The only thing that stays the same with my diet is breakfast - egg whites and oatmeal.
Q: When someone sees or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most
common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: The number one thing I hear is "Your a bodybuilder"! and I reply "no I compete in the Figure division BIG difference.."lol. Then it's usually followed by some crazy thing they have heard like we starve ourselves and do nothing but fake tan and workout all the time (so not true). As anyone in this game would know we eat all the time and if you leave your arm out long enough we might eat that too....LOL!
Q: When they see or hear it that first time, what is the one question or
comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: "Woman with muscle are gross", I beg to differ lady's!
Q: What is the best and worst part of competing?
A: The best part for me is meeting all those people that are going through the same thing and they all are sharing the same goal. Showtime is that one day you don't have to explain why your eating Tilapia, and drinking a gallon of water to anyone. Everyone gets you, you feel like you belong somewhere! Worst part for me is not placing, I can't help it I'm extremely competitive and not making top 5 is always disappointing for me at the moment but then i just try harder the next time.
Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Where do I start...Jamie Eason, Gina Alotti, Monica Brant, Jen Hendershott, Latisha Wilder, I could keep going for days!
Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Pizza
Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one
piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: This is going to be hard but don't give up, use every ounce of fear, pain, sweat, and tears and go for it! No one can stop you but you!
Q: Do you get a lot of questions from friends about diet advice?
A: Not really, typically I suggest something for them when we go to dinner but ultimately it's their choice. I like crazy stuff so they don't ask me anymore...LOL.
Q" Is fitness modeling something that interests you?
A: Yes when I first started competing I was like I'm going to stick with whatever takes off first my modeling or fitness career, boy was I silly they both took off like a rocket. You can see some of my work on my website www.cwmodeling.net
Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: I love to travel, watch movies, love to shop (it's my weakness), anytime with my family is always great.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Christina Watson.
A: I have a pretty simple life, lets see AM cardio, then it's off to work I'm the Operations Manager at LA Fitness in Beavercreek OH, nightly workout, chill with the family get a good dinner and do it again the next day. I use to be on the go constantly with modeling, training, traveling but my New Years resolution 09' was to stop and smell the roses for once, life's too short!
Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I love to do yard work or anything that involves me being outside. I say this because people say I come off very DIVA like until you get to know me. Trust me if I could show up to work in sweats and tee shirt, no makeup I would people:)
Q: Describe Christina Watson in five words.
A: Resilient, Loyal, Independent, Strong , Caring
Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: None as of yet!
Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Checkout my new website www.cwmodeling.net - All Natural is the way to go!
Q: Are you looking for sponsors?
A: I have been looking for a sponsor for years just don't know how to go about getting one, every story I have heard from athletes is that is just happened for them.
Q: Christina, again, I thank you for taking the time to do this. Any last words
before you go?
A: Thank you again for giving me them opportunity to communicate with other athletes that share the same passion I do for this sport! God is Love:)

Tales of a Strong Willed Woman
Happy Summer 2010 to all my health and fitness fanatics!! It is hot and sunny here in the great state of Texas and I am soaking up every minute of it!! No I am not out partying and showing off my hard earned body, I am staying busy with my training, work and spending time with friends. Many people at work keep on asking me if I am done with my training now that I have competed but they don't understand that my training is not a seasonal thing, this is my lifestyle.
When I first began losing weight, back in my early 20s, I always got a lot of pressure from my sisters because I was "too focused". I really didn't understand what was so wrong with me having goals and going after them. I was told repeatedly that I was selfish (and a few other terms I will leave out) so naturally my feelings were left hurt and I was confused. Then I came to realize maybe they had goals that they were not going after or maybe they just weren't setting goals for themselves at all. It wasn't really about me and what I was doing, it was about them and what they were not doing!! I had to distance myself from this negative energy and stay on course, stay focused. It took a few years of constant arguing and trying to make them understand who I was but it never worked. I was trying so hard to make them accept me and all it produced were tears and excess stress! So while I do love my sisters having them at a distance is just better for our relationships and lives.
My first goal in January was to lean out, work on building more muscle and prepare for my first season of figure competitions. I found my coach, set up a plan and got to work. My focus and determination overcame me like never before and my transformation was amazing! I was pushing as hard as I could at the gym while working full time as an operating room nurse. I had my rough days where I was mostly just feeling impatient with everyone but for the most part my excitement and determination kept me smiling. Fast forward 6 months later and I was winning first place and overall in my premier show at the NPC Oklahoma Championships!! My coach and I were ecstatic and proud to have reached this point and we were now nationally qualified. As soon as I got home from this show I was two weeks out from my next show, NPC Jr Nationals in Chicago, IL. Those couple of weeks were rough and tough on me but I stayed persistent and pushed through. My placing was not what I wanted on the national stage, but it was a great learning experience and now I know what I need to bring when I return next year.
My coach and I decided that the best things for me to do the rest of this year are to put on more muscle and to maintain my low body fat so when I return to the stage next year my prep won't need to be as long. At first I was a bit stressed out at this decision because I had just began competing and already I had to step down off the stage (which I LOVE!) and return to the drawing board. We had made a tremendous stride in my physique already but the size/muscle maturity of me in comparison with the other competitors was lacking. It was a lot to take on while my body was going through a roller coaster of emotions aka the post-show slump. I had to refocus my brain basically and set some new goals so I didn't feel lost and out of whack!
During this time, lost in the wilderness of emotion, I met someone that was and maybe still is undergoing training for his first competition (hot body/men's physique) and I thought that he had a lot in common with me. We had a great conversation and began relating our different experiences with one another, I was glad to make a new friend. His mind set was obviously shifting and he was realizing it was quite the battle to hang out with party animals while trying to focus on being healthy and prepping for a show. Yes it is possible to keep your friends that do not participate in the same lifestyle, but when some of those friends start to come down hard on you or call you names for your choices, that is a difficult and harmful relationship. A lot of my friends have found inspiration in what I am doing and they have began chasing their own dreams, fitness related or not and they tell me it is because I did the same and it motivated them. This is amazing and makes what I am doing even more exciting! I had already gone through the experience with the party animal/jealous friends years ago so it brought back so many memories when he was telling me similar stories about a few of his friends! The fact that I was able to remove myself from these kinds of situation with ease now though seemed to have turned him off however and I was chastised once again for my commitment to health and fitness. I was told that I was too hardcore, "too focused." I did not know what to think! Brought back the feeling my sisters gave me when I was younger. Here I am taking care of myself and reaching major milestones in my journey and this person comes along and kicks me in the back of my knees after putting up a front that they had the same passion. Awkward!
Support is essential to living a happy life. Whether it is receiving or giving, this act is extremely meaningful and produces only positive byproducts when it comes from a good place. You wouldn't tell a fellow coworker that they needed to quit working so hard because they were doing so well at their job whether or not you were doing the same in comparison, you would provide support and help them reach the top. If you are the kind of person that attempts to knock someone down while they are focused and performing their best however, nothing good will come from it. On the flip side, if you are the kind of person that chooses to lift those who are focused and working hard then you will most likely receive the same in return. Sounds like a pretty simple notion now doesn't it?
Bottom line to my column this time: stay focused on your dreams, keep short and long term goals and don't let anyone come in between you and your success in life. Support is a blessing, patience is key.
"Goals are a means to an end, not the ultimate purpose of our lives. They are simply a tool to concentrate our focus and move us in a direction. The only reason we really pursue goals is to cause ourselves to expand and grow. Achieving goals by themselves will never make us happy in the long term; it's who you become, as you overcome the obstacles necessary to achieve your goals, that can give you the deepest and most long-lasting sense of fulfillment."

IFBB Pro Stacy Wright Team Universe Interview
At Team Universe, Stacy Wright won what many thought she should have won already, her IFBB Pro card. You are always happy for someone when they reach such a huge goal, but for Stacy you are extra happy. Because Stacy is extra deserving. She is an incredible dedicated and hard working woman. There are many things to be fascinated by with Stacy, she is beautiful, great physique, very friendly, but another really thing to like is her energy and passion in her routines. You can see it even in photos of the routine parts of Fitness competitions. With her continued hard work, dedication, passion, and as you will read, support from her husband, Stacy winning her Pro card is just the tip of the iceberg in how far she is going to go in the Fitness industry.
Q: Stacy, thanks for taking the time out to do a second interview.
A: No Problem! Thanks for having me back! =)
Q: For those who may have missed the first interview, can you tell a little about yourself.
A: I'm 27 years old from Charleston, West Virginia. I work as a registered nurse and personal trainer. I started competing in 2005 and switched over to the NPC in 2007. My husband and I work together on my training and nutrition. He's my best friend and soul mate! This Friday, July 16th we will be celebrating out 6th wedding anniversary! I'm so glad we get to share this journey together!
Q: First I must say congrats on winning the Overall at Team Universe and earning your Pro card.
A: Thank you VERY much!
Q: What does the Pro card mean to you personally?
A: I can't put it in words! It just means that with hard work, dedication, and using your gifts from God to their fullest potential you can accomplish ANYTHING! I am so grateful!
Q: As a show itself what did you think of it?
A: The show was GREAT! Your typical national show with so many amazing competitors! I, personally, love that type of stage for my routine so I was very pleased with the location.
Q: How confident were you going in?
A: To be honest, I was pretty sure I could pull off a pro card. Coming off of Jr Nationals placing 2nd and then getting 3 more weeks to work on my physique and clean up the routine that last little bit I knew I could come in better. The thing is, you're never guaranteed anything so you really never KNOW! With every show I get better, so does my competition. All I know, is I did my best and the rest is out of my hands.
Q: After pre-judging how were you feeling about your chances?
A: I felt really good about my routine after Friday night. For me, it was probably one of the best times I'd ever run through it. The physique round was Saturday morning. Backstage was very hot so I was afraid after sitting around for some time what I might look like on stage. I must have looked okay because they moved me in from the outer side for comparisons. I knew then I had to at least be in the running.
Q: How did you feel about the overall package your brought to the stage?
A: I felt like I brought a great package to the stage. I definitely try to bring the muscle and conditioning but with a side of girl-next-door added on! haha!
Q: What part of your physique would you say was the one you have improved the most the last year?
A: This year the goal was just to be able to keep as much muscle as possible while dieting down. So I would say I most improved on conditioning, while keeping my muscles full. If I did have to pick something out, I would say my triceps have really made a lot of progress over the past year.
Q: Was there one aspect of your physique you thought could have been better or you want to improve on?
A: There are always things to improve on! You'll hear me talk many times about progress. That's all you can ask for from year to year and show to show. Many changes in my physique have taken place over the years... I just plan to continue making changes and improving each year from show to show!
Q: Did your prep go as smoothly as hoped for?
A: Prep never goes smoothly! Life gets in the way. haha! I just have learned to accept that and do the best I can! This year I had some back problems which put a damper on my off season progress and I was even afraid I wouldn't be able to compete at all. I worked with a chiropractor and went ahead and did that Pittsburgh show on May 1st. After I did my routine at the finals, my back was pretty sore. Two days later, I woke up and felt brand new! My back hasn't hurt me since! I said it's a good thing I did that show because somewhere in the mix it fixed my back! haha! Who would've thought!?
Aside from that, I've been working my crazy 12 hour shifts at the hospital, my husband competed in his bodybuilding show, and then right before Jr Nationals we found out my grandmother was sick. Family ALWAYS comes first! So with prep it always becomes a balancing act. But in everything we do in life we have to find a balance, but you make time for the things you love!
Q: Is there a point in the prep process where you say "O.K. I am ready"?
A: Once I run through my routine perfect a few days before leaving for the show, it boosts my confidence and I know I'm ready.
Q: Anything about the prep process that you can say you want to do different next time?
A: Like I keep saying, there's always room for improvement! Each prep I have to relearn my body with each different situation. This time was such a great accomplishment because we were able to get all my meals in and figure out what my body needed for energy and to be effective both in my training, but also at work. Since I'm an RN at the hospital working 12+ hour shifts, that truly is a great accomplishment for me to pull that off!
Q: After a show like that, are you mentally drained at all?
A: ABSOLUTELY!!
Q: The week before a show like that, what were you thinking about? Nervous or excited, or what?
A: I was just in coast mode, trying to soak up every bit of excitement I could. I had to work the 3 days before leaving for the show. Then Thursday the 8th, when we were traveling to NJ... that was my birthday! So I tried to just make the most of every little bit of this weekend!
Q: How about those last 5 minutes before you hit the stage, what were you thinking about?
A: It was pretty deep the last 5 minutes before I hit the stage for my routine Friday night. To be honest, I said a prayer and thought of my husband out in the crowd ready to cheer me on! He is amazing and I couldn't do it without him! I also thought of what my Dad told me before I left home. I was afraid to leave because my grandma was doing progressively worse. My dad told me when he hugged me to "Win it for Maw-maw!" God gave me SUCH a peace before walking on stage I cannot even begin to describe it. It gave me chills when I walked off stage and one of the girls told me I had a 'glow' about me that she'd never seen before. It was beautiful!
Q: When you are on stage did you try and read the judges reactions at all or just focus on what you are doing?
A: I don't try to figure out the judges. I smile and enjoy myself and hope they like what they see and can feel my excitement!
Q: Whats the first thing you ate once it was over?
A: I really wanted Chili's, as many of you know! haha! It's my favorite. By the time the show was over though, they were already closed. Andrew and I went to TGI Fridays instead and I still got my chicken quesadillas!
Q: Was there any other competitors you noticed who really impressed you?
A: I am always very impressed by the other competitors! Everyone brings something different to the table and has their own strengths! It's just a blessing to me that the overall package I brought to the stage at this show just happened to be rewarded! I am sooo thankful!
Q: Anyone you got to meet or see for the first time that you were excited about?
With the boards online and the girls I meet from show to show, it's always so exciting to be backstage! Some of these girls I only see once or twice a year IF that, so it's almost like a reunion when we all get together! Especially the fitness girls, we are such a tight knit group, I love being a part of such great and inspirational group!
Q: How important is support from family and friends at a show like this?
A: I could not do ANY of this if it wasn't for my husband! He's my husband, best friend, trainer, nutritionist, tanner, chef, teammate, and soul mate! This sport is hard enough as it is, but having him by my side assisting me all along the way and giving me the reassurance that this is what I'm destined for and what I always dreamed of keeps me focused and on the right track! He knows what I need and when I need it. Of all the shows I've done he's been there cheering me on at every single one! My parents and in-laws are all very supportive as well! They know that I'm doing what I love and accomplishing great things so they are VERY proud and wish me the best at it because it makes me so happy!
Q: Have you decided when you will be on stage next?
A: To be honest, I'm trying to figure out the details for World's to see if it's something doable. My body at this point and time is ready for a break, and I want to do this for the long haul so want to be careful not to have to shift into overdrive. I also will have to come up with a new routine, figure out my work schedule, and a few other details as well that throw a wrench in the loop. It IS a great opportunity and I would want to go and represent my country in the best light! So if things work out it looks like Mexico at the end of September. If not, that's okay too. Either way my pro debut on the IFBB stage will probably be in 2011. Again, I plan to be in this for the long haul, so want to do what's best for my body both to heal up after a full contest season as well as give myself some time to push some weight and make changes needed to compete in the pros.
Q: Anyone you want to thank for helping you in the process?
A: You probably get sick of hearing me say it but... you know the answer to this... my husband. =) I also like to thank Tamee Marie for making me such a BEAUTIFUL suit and for being there by my side while we won our pro cards together! That is such an honor to me! Jason and Siouxcountry.com for having such a wonderful and supportive site.
Q: Anything you want to take this time to plug or promote?
