A Weekly Blog By Nationally Ranked Bikini Competitor Vanessa Prebyl
Hellloooooo!!!! :-) Today for all of you Bikini competitors I will be talking about suit selection. Suit selection can make or break you in a competition. The key is to find a cut that flatters your body type and draws the attention of the judges without being too flashy. The best way to find a suit is to TRY THEM ON! I can not exaggerate this point enough. A good rule of thumb is to order your bikini at least 6 weeks in advance from your show so that if any alterations are needed you will have plenty of time to have them done.
First of all, most of you know the BEST bikini that FITS your body!!!!! Try on different styles to see what works best for your body. Does it cut-in to your hips? Do you need more support in the bikini top? Do you feel tie-sides would be best for your body at this point in your training? Remember, if this is your first competition you may not know how small you will be once you step on the stage. For my first show, I purchased a tie-side bikini from Suits You Swimwear* so that I could adjust the sides as needed.
Another important factor is the COLOR of your suit. I have always been told to stick with DARK colors so that they really POP on stage. I would stick with black, dark blue, purple, red, and green. It is also good to take into consideration your skin tone and hair color when choosing a suit. The best way to find out if the bikini will look nice on you is to try it on.
Also along with color, DESIGN on a bikini can either help or hurt you. Try to find a design that draws attention to you and your curves, but does not distract the attention of the judges away from your body. Furthermore, the Scrunch bikini bottom is very popular right now.
Lastly, QUALITY of material and embellishments such as Swarovski crystals and metal or crystal side connectors will help you get noticed. Remember not to overdo it with all of the fun crystals, we still want to see your body first and foremost. My last National competition I wore a bikini made from Passion Fruit DEsignes** and loved the fit, style, and color. Berns really knows what she is doing and knows how to make your body look amazing. :-)
