On May 14th the NAAFS put on its newest installment of Proving Grounds. I always say how I love these shows because it gives young fighters a chance to get in the cage and show they belong on the NAAFS's bigger shows. This one featured some good fights highlighted by a bloodbath between John Rodriguez and Derek Cook. These two went at it bell to bell and both have a lot to be proud of. Also I was very impressed with the debut of Jessica Eve Richer from Gracie Barra. This girl has superstar potential.
1. Amateur Bantamweight
Sensei Robertson (0-2 Team Chaos) vs Jordan Baldwin (0-0 Evolve)
RD 1: Robertson shoots in and gets a takedown but Baldwin gets on top. Baldwin lands a couple body shots. Robertson sweeps and gets on top. Baldwin does a good job avoiding damage. Baldwin gets an arm but it let's Robertson get his back. Baldwin is able to get on top and get Robertson's back. Baldwin gets his hooks in and lands some head shots to open up the choke and get the tap.
Result: Jordan Baldwin by Tapout ( Rear Naked Choke) at 1:59 of Round 1
2. Amateur 155LB
Nikita Njetles (0-1 American Muscle MMA) vs Jessica Eve Richer (0-0 Gracie Barra)
RD 1: Richer gets a takedown into north-south position. Njetles does a good job controlling her wrists to avoid damage. Richer gets her back and a body triangle. Njetles still doing good avoiding damage with wrist control.Richer lands a couple punches and opens up the choke for the tap.

3. Amateur Lightweight
John Rodriguez (0-2 Fight Fit) vs Derek Cook (0-0 Team Blackout/Team Impact)
RD 1: Leg kick by Rodriguez. They clinch and go down with Rodriguez on top. Cook gets a triangle but Rodriguez pulls out and lands punches. They stand up. Cook is bleeding from the nose. Body kick by Rodriguez. Rodriguez lands hard punches and Cook is bleeding bad. Cook lands a leg kick and a cross and they clinch on the cage. Cook gets a takedown. Rodriguez avoids any damage.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Rodriguez
RD 2: Jab by Cook. Rodriguez lands cross and they clinch against the cage. Rodriguez lands a foot stomp. Cook lands two punches and Rodriguez lands a cross. Cook is bleeding bad again. Both are missing wild shots. Rodriguez lands two punches and Cook lands a nice counter. The clinch against the cage and both land body shots. Rodriguez hits two knees to the body and several hard punches. Cook lands a knee to the body and then both land punches to the head. Rodriguez lands a knee to the body to end the round.
I scored RD 2: 10-9 Rodriguez
RD 3: Both land punches and clinch. Cook lands a good punch and they separate and both land. They again clinch by the cage and Rodriguez lands body shots. A hook by Rodriguez and then the ref separates them. Rodriguez lands a kick to the leg and then the body. Cook lands two punches. They clinch and both land shots to the head. They separate and Cook hurts him with punches. Rodriguez answers with several hard shots that hurt Cook. They clinch on the cage and Rodriguez lands a good knee. Both lands hard shots to end the round.

4. Amateur Super Heavyweight
Jeremie Elkins (2-2 Hamilton MMA) vs Nick Brashear (2-0 Kim's Martial Arts)
RD 1: Both miss punches. They clinch against the cage and Brasher gets a takedown. Elkins holds him close. Brasher goes for an arm and gets a Kimura for the tap.
Result: Nick Brashear by Tapout (Kimura) at 1:06 of Round 1
5. Amateur Light Heavyweight
Ryan Walls (4-3 Central Block MMA) vs Jon Pipkins (4-8 Independent)
RD 1: Both come out throwing and then clinch. Walls gets a takedown into side control. Pipkins gets half guard. Not much action. Walls postures up and lands a couple shots. Now Walls lands some body shots. Walls tacks him against the cage and goes for an arm but Pipkins pulls out.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Walls
RD 2: Both are throwing wild shots. Takedown by Walls and he lands some shots. Walls gets his back and gets his hooks in and the choke for the tap.

6. Amateur 170LBS
Allana Jones (0-1 American Muscle MMA) vs Faith Townsend (0-1 Campbell Martial Arts)
RD 1: Jones lands a jab and a cross. Jones hurts her and drops her with two punches. Jones gets on top and lands ground and pound from the mount. Jones gets her back and lands shots to the head. Now back in mount and landing more ground and pound till the ref steps in.
Result: Allana Jones by TKO at 1:30 of Round 1
7. Amateur Bantamweight
Frankie Kidd (1-2 Butch Hiles MMA) vs Levert Hare (1-1 Instigator)
RD 1: Jab by Hare. Hare hurts him with punches and Kidd gets a takedown. Hare almost gets a sweep. He tries again and gets it to get on top. Hare lands a couple body shots. Hare pushes him against the cage and lands more body shots. Kidd doing a good job at defending. More body shots by Hare. Not much action now. Hare now lands hard head shots and the ref stops it.
Result: Levert Hare by TKO at 2:59 of Round 1
8. Amateur Middleweight
Davis Oracio (4-4 Campbell Martial Arts) vs Brian Jefferies (3-2 Pain Headquarters)
RD 1: Jefferies charges in and they clinch on the cage. An accidental low blow by Oracio stops the action. They resume and Jefferies forces a clinch. Oracio gets a guillotine but Jefferies pulls out. Jefferies is on top but Oraco defends well. Sweep by Oracio and her gets on top. Jefferies also defends well and avoids damage. Oracio postures up and lands a couple punches. Oracio gets half mount and lands shots. Oracio going for a choke but can't get it. Oracio gets side control and looks for an arm as the round ends.

RD 2: Jefferies misses a spinning back fist and they clinch. Jefferies lands knees to the leg. Jefferies drops down and gets a double leg. Jefferies gets side control but Oracio defends well. Now Jefferies lands lots of punches and the ref stops it.
Result: Brian Jefferies by TKO at 1:05 of Round 2
9. Amateur Featherweight
Kyle Dunn (3-1 Team Impact) vs Sean Serfass (3-1 Pain Headquarters)
RD 1: Cross by Serfass. Both throwing and landing. Serfass gets a double leg takedown and lands a couple punches. Dunn defends well. Body shot by Serfass. Serfass gets side control and starts landing shots. Dunn pulls guard. Dunn tries for a triangle but can't get it. Dunn gets up and tries for a takedown. He gets it, but Serfass lands on top. Dunn rolls over and gets on top. Dunn lands a shot as the round ends.
I scored RD 1: 10-9 Serfass
RD 2: Leg kick by Serfass followed by another. Really nice leg kick by Dunn. Serfass lands some punches and a kick to the body. Hard leg kick by Serfass followed up with another. Dunn lands a leg kick and then Serfass hurts him with a punch and takes him down. Dunn pulls guard. Serfass stands up. Leg kick by Serfass and then some punches. Serfass shoots in and gets a takedown and lands shots to end the round.

RD 3: Hard leg kick by Serfass and Dunn gets a takedown. Serfass holds him close. Dunn postures up and lands shots. Serfass gets a sweep and lands some short punches. Dunn lands shots from the bottom. Serfass postures up and lands punches to the head. The ref stands them. Leg kick by Serfass and Dunn shoots and gets a takedown to end the round.
