Jill Rudison Interview

Q: First, Jill, I want to thank you for taking the time to do this.
A: My pleasure! Thanks for interviewing me! You like me..you really like me! :P

Q: Can you start out by telling a little about yourself.
A: I was born and raised in Miami, Florida in the suburbs of Kendall. I’m an only child, a Leo and I enjoy long walks on the beach.

Q: Before the gym were you an especially athletic person? Play any sports or anything?
A; As a kid I played softball, did gymnastics, ice skated and took various dance lessons throughout the years.

Q: What initially led you into the gym?
A: I signed up for weight training class as an elective in high school because I figured there would be a lot of guys. It worked.

Q: Was training something you picked up fairly easy? How long before you started to see results?
A: I took to lifting like a fish in water. I loved everything about it. I started to see results fairly soon, but I often “balanced” it out and now see how I actually cancelled it out with Taco Bell and crappy fast food late-night munchee runs. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have been a smokin’ hot teenager. Instead, I was just a smokin’ teenager. :-)

Q: What made you decide to compete for the first time?
A: After I finally started getting somewhat serious about my health and fitness, my trainer and friend Maria Bellando dared me to enter her Southern States Figure show in 2003. Not one to back down from a challenge, I had to accept when she threw in a double on the dog dare. After that, I was hooked.

Q: Is competing something your family and friends supported?
A: My family and friends support everything I do that does not harm me and makes me happy or they are not my family and friends. Although they definitely think I’m weird sometimes. But that’s OK because we are ALL weird in our own quirky and special ways.

Q: Was competing what you expected or did anything surprise you about it?
A: What I learned about myself through competing surprised the hell out of me. I learned that I love structure and balance and seeing how far I can push myself to be the best I can at something. I learned to believe in myself. I also learned that sautéed asparagus with Splenda is great, too.

Q: Can you share your contest history.
A: How much time do you have?

Q: As far as body parts, what do you feel is your best one?
A: My wheels! I’m Jill “If Legs Could Kill” Rudison, apparently.

Q: Do you have a part you most like to train?
A: Again, my wheels. And I love blasting my shoulders.

Q: What is your normal training routine and diet like and how do you alter it for contest prep?
A; I used to take a couple of months off from training as hard as I do on-season, but this time around, I’m not stopping down! I will ease up on my diet for a few weeks every August – it’s my birthday month and an ideal time to enjoy the end of summer and give my body a break from dieting before the fall competing season. I weight train an hour a day, 4-5 days a week, do an average of 1-1.5 hours of cardio a day doing intervals on various equipment as well as my secret weapon of an hour of SPX pilates 4-5 days a week. I try to stay between 1400-1700 calories a day and fluctuate high-carb days/low-fat days with high-fat/low carb days 2-3 times a week. Pre-show I’ll add an extra hour of cardio a day to my routine and tweek my diet as needed according to how I look.

Q: When someone sees your physique or hears you compete for the first time, what is the most common reaction? More positive or negative?
A: More positive than anything. Veeerry inquisitive. But then again, people are always asking me fitness and diet questions strictly based on my appearance. And whether you’re bikini, figure, BB, or physique, it doesn’t matter. We are ALL competitors who love the sport. I just want to help make bodybuilding cool again.

Q: When they see it that first time, what is the one question or comment you are most sick of hearing?
A: “What can I TAKE to lose weight?” Not HOW, but what can my lazy ass take? Diet and exercise, folks. PERIOD. There is no pill, fitness fairy godmother, magic words, or surgery that can get you fit and healthy. Stop asking that question!!

Q: What is the biggest misconception about women who train and compete or the one thing you wish people understood?
A: That lifting weights will make you bulky. People are SO uneducated and ignorant when it comes to women and lifting weights. I hope that by earning my Pro Card I can bring back the Cory Everson look and influence making weightlifting for woman something that is celebrated and practiced more!

Q: What is the best and worst part of training for you?
A: BEST – Watching my body morph into something I love that empowers me.
WORST - Dieting for a show. I loooove food and am a fat kid at heart.

Q: Do you have any favorite competitors or any you admire?
A: Cory Everson Monica Brant Joanne Lee

Q: Do you have a favorite cheat food?
A: Cupcakes!! Especially Red Velvet. And icing and frosting. I’ll eat it out of the can. I know, I know…don’t judge me. :P

Q: If another woman told you she wanted to start training, what is the one piece of advice you would most want to give her?
A: To start, find a good trainer with whom you are comfortable to show you the ropes around the gym and equipment.

Q: Do you think its becoming more common for women to use the weights as opposed to just doing cardio and things?
A: YES. Amen!

Q: Outside of training, any other hobbies or activities you enjoy?
A: Surfing, boating, anything on the water, SPX pilates, hanging with my mutts, people watching, making reality tv and events, producing stuff, writing for Venice Paparazzi.com, sleeping (rare), doing one good deed a day, organizing and cleaning and riding my bike around Venice.

Q: Can you describe a typical day in the life of Jill Rudison.
A:
6AM – Rise and shine, walk dogs, make coffee, eat breakfast and hit the gym
7AM – 9:30/10AM – Weight train & cardio
10AM – Work or go home
Eat about 4 more times
7/8PM – SPX Pilates & cardio/posing
9PM – Go home, eat, shower
10-12PM – Veg out and snooze on the couch with a pile of dogs
12PM – Nighty night

Q: Describe Jill Rudison in five words.
A: Sarcastic, determined, loyal, dedicated, rad

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
A: I’m not angry despite my angry exterior. I’m really funny, actually.

Q: Any set plans for the near future as far as competing or anything else?
A: Women’s Physique Nationals in Miami in November!! Momma I’m comin’ home! Pro Card or bust!!

Q: Anything you want to take this opportunity to plug or promote?
A: Heck yeah!
